T: I believe I remember you saying that you practice intermittent fasting, only eating between noon and 8pm. What time do wake up and do you ever workout in the morning? I'm curious because I'm guessing your workouts are more intense than any I ever do and I sometimes feel nauseated when working out on a completely empty stomach first thing in the morning. I had a trainer once who recommended eating a banana to have something in there.

Chili,
What does your daily calorie intake look like and what do you consider a lot of protein?

Thanks

I'm quickly becoming a fan of Bulletproof Coffee Its great before a morning workout and you don't really need to eat anything until dinner.

Daily calories through this process have ranged from 1800-2500 which is pretty low for me

A lot of protein for me is 200+ grams/day, up to 250ish on days when I work out hard.

I've been above-average sized since my senior year of high school (1996) and have always felt compelled to eat more of everything. So far during this process, I've cut back on most portions and gone low-carb, heavy protein and I have not seen any real loss in performance at the gym or how I feel on any given day. It's been eye-opening, for sure. I joked with my wife last night that this bet is all about beating a friend and winning the bet, but really shouldn't be long-term health and well-being be incentive enough to make these changes???

May 24th Update: down 7.0 lbs so far (up .6 from yesterday)

weighed in at 256.0 this morning.

Ate 44 total carbs yesterday with lots of protein, 1 gallon of water

Thanks, nice work.

Does gym work consist of compounding lifting mostly?

I do CrossFit so it varies day by day. Some days are more cardio while others are heavy lifting. Throughout this process, I've leaned more towards doing cardio, at least an hour or so each day 4-5x per week. After this bet is over, I'll likely go back to a more balanced schedule.

May 25th Update: down 8.0 lbs since 5/15/17, 15.4 lbs overall since 4/1/17

weighed in at 255.0 this morning.

Ate 24 total carbs yesterday with lots of protein, 1 gallon of water. Today begins the 1 week countdown to next Thursday's weigh in. Saturday, Sunday and Monday I'll move to 2+ gallons of water per day and less calories.

May 26th Update: down 8.6 lbs since starting this phase on 5/15/17,
down 16.0 lbs overall since 4/1/17

weighed in at 254.4 this morning.

Ate 28 total carbs yesterday with lots of protein, 1 gallon of water.

6 days until the weigh-in. Just as I'm getting used to the 1 gallon of water per day, that goes up to 2 gallons tomorrow. That's a LOT of water so we'll see how that goes.

Also - have been slowly adding time to cold water at the end of my showers. Up to 45 seconds now. I think this is way more mental than physical. 30+ years of warm/hot showers is a tough habit to break.

down 16.6 lbs overall since 4/1/17

weighed in at 253.8 this morning. (same as yesterday)

Ate 60 total carbs yesterday (father in law's birthday - couldn't resist the garlic knots) with lots of protein, 2 gallons of water that's a LOT of water.

May 29th Update: down 10.8 lbs since starting this phase on 5/15/17,

May 30th Update: down 10.8 lbs since starting this phase on 5/15/17,
down 18.6 lbs overall since 4/1/17

weighed in at 252.2 this morning (same as yesterday)

scaling back to "only" 1 gallon of water today. Happy to be done with the 2 gallons/day thing.

my opponent has essentially given up on this wager. the weigh-in is on Friday, June 1. I'm going to win, it's now just a matter of by how much.

4 nights in Vegas

Did pretty well with protein-laced salads, but hit the Mint Indian Bistro courtesy of JimmyEatsVegas and had two pieces of naan and a scoop of rice. Felt dirty.

down 19.2 lbs overall since 4/1/17

**last post was off for some reason, both date-wise and numbers-wise. the lack of carbs must have been getting to me**

June 1st Update: down 12.6 lbs since starting this phase on 5/15/17
down 19.8 lbs overall since 4/1/17

weighed in this morning at 250.6 (total weight loss of 7.33% in 8 weeks)

thoughts:
the 2 week period of super-low carbs was not as bad as i was expecting. i'd never really done anything like that before and was happy to see the very real results that followed. even with my fairly rigorous workout routine, i never felt sluggish or had a lack of energy.

the past 8 weeks have been pretty eye-opening as it's the first time in a few years that i've been strict about diet and nutrition. while i certainly had the occasional desire for something unhealthy, i did not feel as though i was missing out on anything or depriving myself. it's been a good reset for me in terms of my body and weight and people have started to take notice it and mention it, which is always a good thing.

Heh. I put a couple lbs on after Vegas.

Yet, i feel better and my pants fit better. Starting to come around to the idea that the scale is not a great advisor and the measuring tape might be the way to mark progress.

*kindly reply with a link to the thread where this is already being discussed if my question below should be in another thread, thx.

Hey Adam, I was listening to the podcast (#462) and I heard you say you have a bet to get down to 150 pounds. That seems incredibly low, can you share your height and whether you believe this is a healthy weight to be at for you?

Also, congrats on your progress thus far, I can't remember what you said your current weight is but you've made great progress.

I've made a mess of myself and after being in phenomenal shape 2 years ago, I'm now close to 280 (51 years old, 6'-1"), have plantar fasciitis that is borderline debilitating so I desperately need to get my **** together asap to get this weight off that is surely contributing to my PF.

Can you share some of the strategies/resources you're using to accomplish your goals?

Thank you and continued success

To find out how tall Adam is, listen to the Bill Perkins episode. It's among the greatest moments in Pokercast history. Internet Poker Wall of Fame worthy.

Thanks, I managed to find that episode and burst out laughing in the middle of the gym like a lunatic when Adam popped off about getting down to 150 and then got called on it.

Wish they had a separate thread that kept up with his progress and discussed strategies he's using to lose weight

I listened to the Bill Perkins episode near it's original airing. Got a laugh out of it at first, but to see that it motivated you might be a life changer for me as well.

Current status 6ft 2 230lbs. I live in Seoul. Crazy about poker. Lets just say that your show motivated me to apply for work with pokerstars and got to Isle of Man for a face to face with SteveD. That was 2 years ago. I was about 210lbs then. Not getting that chance caused me to pack on a few more pounds but it hasnt gotten totally out of hand. Though it was soul crushing. Was also Seoul crushed to bubble the PCA dealers choice promo you had with Pot Limit Ogopogo.

Anyways. I just turned 40. Live an ocean away from Vegas and love poker. Never been to Vegas. Never been to WSOP. Done macau and Atlantic City.

Mentioned to the wife about your bet and success. Asked If I can get down to 80kg (she doenst do pounds) could I play the World Series, not sure if that means main. But it would mean ditching family for a few weeks. She said 75kg. I said deal. I guess that gives me a year to lose 30kg.

If I do this I will be forever greatful. Rest of my life starts tomorrow.

Excited.
