That point about the flatter sole on the Ping's rings true with me, it is a big reason why I love my G400 driver and 3w.

Just picking up golf again after years of not playing.

New clubs = Callaway XR Speed Driver. Callaway XR Fairway 5 wood. 5-PW Callaway XR irons. Tommy Armour 54 degree wedge. Titleist putter.

Used Clubs = Taylor Made RBZ 3 wood. Taylor Madr RAC 60 degree wedge.

I need to figure out if I can hit 4 or 3 irons well enough to avoid hybrids. Gonna wait till I get my swing dialed in.

It's probably crazy but I'm going to play a couple rounds with a mixed iron set, to try and get some clarity on which I like better. I know I like chipping better with the 9i from the S55 set, jury still out on full shots. Only hit five full shots with irons last night.

In the bag:

Titleist 915D3, Atmos Blue 6S at 44.5"
OG Adams Tight Lies 16.5* with Adams S steel shaft
19* (turned to 17*) Mizuno CLK hybrid, Speeder Evolution HB S
21* Titleist 818H1 hybrid, Atmos Blue TS 8S
25* Mizuno CLK hybrid, Speeder Evolution HB S
5, 7, 9i Ping S55, CFS S, white dot +1"
6, 8, PW Ping Eye2, Ping shafts S, white dot +1"
54-12: Ping Glide 2.0, Project X, white dot +1/2"
Taylor Made low bounce 60* wedge
Putter: Ping Anser 3, 35"
Ball: Bridgestone e6 (2016), supplies running low
Sun Mountain C130 cart bag / Ping Mit-E-Lite carry bag

On the bench:
Driver: Ping i20, 9.5*, TFC707D (standard length) S
Titleist driver shafts
Titliest 915Fd and 917F2 3 woods
Titliest 816H1 hybrid
rest of Ping Eye2 1-SW, white dot +1", various ping shafts S
rest of Ping S55 3-P, white dot, +1", CFS S
50-12: Ping Glide 2.0, Project X, white dot +1/2"
Cleveland Niblick 37*, 42*, 49*, 56*
A wide variety of defective putters
Some other random clubs

3 wood: I did end up switching to a Rogue Subzero 15* head with a Tensei White shaft. Best decision ever made for me.

Hybrid: Upgraded to an 818 H2 wit a Tensei White. I'm actually about 10 yards shorter with this club which is fine.

Irons: Oh how hate can turn to love. Took me til about May of last year to get used to them and now they will not be leaving the bag.

Wedges: I did switch to a 60* TaylorMade Hi Toe. Kept the same shafts and it's all good. Actually the 50* is my favorite club in the bag. I did order a 60* Vokey recently and waiting for it to arrive. Was messing around chipping with my 54* one day and really liked the bounce on it so I bought the same grind in a 60*.

Putter: Same

Ball: Same

Haha!! Very glad to see your update.

Here's my bag right now:

Driver: Callaway Rogue SubZero 9 degree. Stiff yellow hzrdus, but not extra stiff. Got fitted for it on the range. Was carrying my old Callaway FT-9 xtra stiff like 235 into a stiff breeze on the testing day, and the new one was carrying 254. I have no idea how far I actually carry it on a normal day. I drove a 315 yard green to the back pin the other day and hit one that I measured with my sky caddie at 285, fairly soft conditions...no wind.

3 wood: NONE. I threw it in the back of my car so I won't be tempted to hit that stupid thing I hook all over the place. Actually, I guess technically I threw my Titleist Driving Iron from 2002 back in my trunk too, so I had an open spot in my bag, so it's back in the bag. It's a Taylor Made V-Steel with extra hook bias. But I don't hit it. Ever.

5 wood:Callaway Rogue SubZero with the blue even flow stiff shaft. It has taken me a while to get used to it, but I'm hitting it pretty great now. Hit one 266(!) the other day. Old 5 wood (Taylor Made R580) was like 220, this one feels closer to 235 average. Love the new technology.

Irons: 3-PW. Titleist AP2 710s. Yardages essentially 7 iron 153 (specific)...6 163...etc. Original grips 10 years old. I'm about to ditch them for Titleist T200s. I hit a lot of mid long irons that I'm wanting to turn into 7-irons. Tested a 7-iron on the course the other day and it was going 175. Game changer hopefully. Might keep my AP2 Pw in the bag to fill in the gap.

52 degree: Standard Cleveland black wedge. I think it's about 10 years old, I don't even know what model lol.

58 degree: Cleveland low bounce from literally 20 years ago. Original grip! Just bought a black RTX wedge to replace it. Hopefully it works.

Putter: Taylor made custom blue spider. Loving it so far. Had it a few months.

Do you guys really know the make up of every club in your bag off the top of your head? I know what head is on my driver and irons, and what brand putter and wedges I have, but couldn't tell you what model they are or any specs on them...much less what shaft is in everything. That's probably a leak on my part though.

Just throw those things out now. No reason not use hybrids.

Pretty much. Gotta do something golf-related during winter and equipment nerding helps pass the time.

Absolutely!

But I also know the bend profile of every shaft on the market and generally speaking what kind of swing they fit. I blame Golf WRX for that.

Things are getting weird out there for me. I'm hitting my 3 and 4 irons super good lately.

My plan is to get a 4-pw set, keep my pw I have now (lol so unstable) and buy a 3H of some sort. But I'm almost...okay with a 3 iron?

Meh kind of. I knew I had a "AP2s" that were stiff and standard (I got fitted...and I was "standard"...how boring). But I didn't know they were "710s" or that the 7 iron was 35 degrees until I looked it up.

I resisted for a long time, in large part because I hit long irons well and every hybrid I tried was a hook machine. Finally found some that aren't and with use they're getting better and better. Nothing longer than a 5i in my bag for the forseeable future.

If the long irons work for you then roll with them. They can be nice off the tee on short par 4's and long par 3's. I like having the hybrids though for 2nd shots on par 5's out of the rough. My longest iron is a 5, then I have 2 hybrids and a 3-wood.

I probably will end up just getting a 4 hybrid, and seeing how that fares covering the distance between my 5 iron and 5 wood. I'm still playing executive courses till I get a more consistent swing.

Just curious, you know the Yonex Rexis series without having to look it up? The reason I ask is because there are very few places to get those in the US so it's not very well known.

Managing an independent top 100 fitting studio I learned that it's one thing to know all the profiles, but it's an art knowing how two different shafts with the same profile will affect ball flight differently. A True Temper shaft is miles different than a Nippon Modus for example.

I have heard of the shaft but do not know without looking it up. Must be a rare bird in the U.S. indeed.

Edit: Looked it up and all I could find was tennis strings. Why does "Rexis" sound familiar to me?

http://yonexusa.com/products/golf/golf-shafts

Quite a few tour pros have had them in their woods, they are amazing feeling shafts at almost half the price of a Graphite Design or Oban.

Last year at the PGA Show they had on display a 27 gram driver shaft just to prove they had the technology to manufacture a shaft that light that wouldn't snap. Had dinner with them both years I was at the show, amazing food porn pictures.

Their Japanese forged irons are pretty sweet as well.

Interesting how they can create a draw or fade biased shaft. I have never even heard of that before. Would be interested to know how they are able to do that.

While I don’t know how Yonex does it, I can tell you that one can create a draw or fade biased shaft by changing the orientation of the hard spot in the shaft. Think of it as SST Puring the shaft and then affixing it to the shaft crooked.

Think I'm going to stick with this setup for a while after putting it together today. Pulled the 4 wood, I never hit it and I've only kept it in there for one hole (where I haven't used it the last few times I've played that course). If I can find a 58 or 60 that I like I'll be happy to replace the TM (and benched Vokey). Still want to do a good fitting someday.

Driver: Titleist 915D3, Atmos Blue 6S at 44.5"

Hybrids:
19* (turned to 17*) Mizuno CLK hybrid, Speeder Evolution HB S
21* Titleist 818H1 hybrid, Atmos Blue TS 8S
25* Mizuno CLK hybrid, Speeder Evolution HB S

Irons:
5i-8i Ping Eye2, Ping shafts S, white dot +1"
9i, PW Ping S55, CFS S, white dot +1"

Wedges:
50-12: Ping Glide 2.0, Project X, white dot +1/2"
54-12: Ping Glide 2.0, Project X, white dot +1/2"
some Taylor Made low bounce 60* wedge

Putter: Ping Anser 3, 35"

Ball: Titleist ProV1, Bridgestone e6 (2016), others from the stash

Just bought a brand new titleist TS2 3 wood and some waterproof new balance shoes with rubber spikes.

3 wood really catches my eye. Perfect look at address imo. Haven’t hit a demo, but I can only assume they’ve made improvements in the past 12 years since I had the F80 titleist 3 wood, which was an excellent club once I got the feel for it.

Waterproof shoes will work nicely for those early morning rounds.
