Joining the club again next month when I can get same price for this year and next. Buddy giving me his old AP2s and some driver from last year to use... going to try to get decent again.

Since I'm going stir crazy waiting to get outside, time to work on getting the bag set for the start of the season. Going to give a 3 hybrid setup a try, pretty big change since last year was really the first time I found even one hybrid that I liked. Also going backward to an older model driver -- at some point this season I'd like to clear out my excess clubs and put the money toward a proper fitting and a new driver. If I ever exhaust my supply of E6s I'll try the new E12s and most recent Pro V.

Sitting in 20 degrees thinking about how I want to dust off another $4k on new clubs for this year. I'll post some pictures at some point, but my clubs are at my parent's place in Florida til I retrieve them next week.

Things I'm tempted to replace in 2019: Everything except my PXG irons. I was kind of luke warm on them when I bought them last summer, but it was mostly because my swing was so crappy I couldn't find the sweet spot with my irons for a stretch. Absolutely love them now. They're incredibly forgiving on mi****s, but still have great feel, and the control I'd want out of a player's iron. Not quite as soft as the miuras I had for 7 years before, but the extra forgiveness is a good trade off.

Driver I hit reasonably well still, just always tempted to try the latest and greatest. Going to 44.5 inches last year was a great choice. Just feel so comfortable with the club in my hands relative to a 45 inch stock length. Much easier to find the sweet spot.

3 wood is still super solid, since the thing is just so hot. That old RBZ head is ridiculous. New heads are just a bit more forgiving in general though, and this one can get a little spinny, especially on mi****s.

I'm torn on the 2 iron. On some courses I do miss playing a hybrid for second shots on par 5s... but especially in tournaments, it's nice to have an iron to hit on tighter holes. The biggest issue I have with it is the shaft is a bit weak for me, so it can get a little spinny. Might just get it tipped a half inch and see if that makes it feel better before I scrap it. I was actually shocked how much I liked the PXG hybrids... tempted to get an 19 degree or so from them with something super stiff in the shaft.

Will likely get a new 51/55 (or 50/54) at some point this season. Will get c-tapers in them, and hopefully make the swing weight a bit higher. The callaways feel very light to me relative to my other clubs, which isn't something I want in my wedges.

I need to update by bag as well. Soooo many changes to come for me too.

Now the changes to come. First off the driver is a love/hate relationship for me. When I am swinging it good I can hit the Rogue very, very well. My SS is 113 and my carry distance is usually around 290y with little to no roll. When I am not swinging it good it is literally off the map. Having the Ping as a back-up driver has worked very well lately. It's easier to hit the middle of the face. I know the spin is a lot higher with that club but I can keep it in the fairway.

My 3 wood plans are to switch to a 15* Rogue SubZero with the same shaft. Don't get me wrong, that current 3-wood is a bomber but I also need something that's a bit easier to hit off of the fairway.

Hybrid: No changes here, yea!

Irons: I switched to these after being fitted in late November at TrueSpec Golf. I absolutely HATE these irons. I should have known that a player's distance iron is not made for me. I have been blasting irons over the greens ever since I have had them in the bag. Sometimes I can hit the 7 iron 180 yards, sometimes I can hit them 200 yards. This has directly related to my handicap going from 3.0 to 7.9 (and climbing).

This is 100% my fault and I should have gone into the fitting asking to hit only player's irons looking for dispersion and distance control. I had that with my AP2s and I really need to get it back to them. My current plan is to wait til I get some more cash and buy the 718 AP2s. I am going to keep the PX LZ 125s because I do like the shafts.

As far as wedges go my plan is to replace them at some time and get a heavier and stiffer shaft. I also think I am going to switch to a 60* and then bend a 54 to 55 and be good there.

Like everyone else I have 2 putters and switch accordingly.


TL/DR: Golf sucks right now.

scott - 1.5" difference between drivers? have you tried the rogue in a shorter shaft?

I haven't mostly because I am lazy. The the G400 is set up with lead tape to make up for the weight difference. Doing that with the Rogue would require me to add and pull tape repeatedly.

Only thing I'm up for this year is new wedges again and I am likely going toward Callaway MD wedges based on the suggestion of my fitter with some Oban shafts of some sort.

I also have a Mizuno H4 3-iron thing that I swap with the hybrid depending on the course and how I'm hitting it compared to the M2 hybrid.

Hit an M5 Driver last night on the indoor flightscope setup as well; I really like the look at address, the face felt great and super hot, but the numbers were very similar to my Cobra and I like the look and feel of it as well. So I'm gonna pass on even swinging any other Drivers this spring; keep dancing with the one I got.

You should def try the King F9 then!

Why would you put Oban shafts in your wedges when you've already apparently been fit for KBS shafts in your irons? KBS makes wedge specific shafts while the only wedge specific shaft Oban carries is Shimada. Of course you could put an Oban CT in your wedges, but if those fit you properly it means the KBS do not in your irons.

I went to my fitter in Denver (D'Lance) to get the loft/lies checked and got to talking to him about new wedges. He said Mack Daddy's were really good wedges and he suggest I try some Oban wedge shaft. I'm a noob so perhaps I misunderstood what he was saying.

I have KBS shafts in my wedges currently and I like them.

Also - perhaps I should go to Texas and get Bo to fit me!

Obviously I'm not trying to fit you, just speaking in generalities here about the process.

MD4 wedges are very good and I have seen the W grind work wonders with players. But the question is, are they good for you?

You always want continuity with iron and wedge shafts, no mixing manufacturers.

I decided to leave irons 2 3 and 4 at home as I never felt like the lie was even close to correct for me.

Driver and irons are a good start!

the irons are really nice, but i never put in the time to get to know the individual shaft lengths the way i should. 5,6,7 impart more spin and thus allow me to work the ball just by altering my stance, with no grip alteration. got a box of srixon soft low spin balls for yesterday and I'm positive it was the right choice. 8,9,pw impart much less spin and thus stance variation results in shots that fly either higher or lower depending on ball placement. my number one mistake is pulling my head up at last second and the result is a fat shot 90% of the time when i do this. 5% of the time i hit it thin, which is a better result since it runs. the other 5% i get lucky and make good contact when pulling my head up.

in all im really happy with the mizuno mp 30 set that i got about 11 years ago lol. except that i need to get the lie fixed on 2,3,4. the clubs do exactly what i tell them to. thus its on me to tell them what to do correctly.

2020 Update:

Driver: Still have the Rogue in a roundabout way. Sold off the G400. Had the Rogue crack on me. Decided to upgrade to the Mavrik and after 3 weeks I gave up on it. I just could not find the center of the face. Went online and bought another used Rogue.

3 wood: I did end up switching to a Rogue Subzero 15* head with a Tensei White shaft. Best decision ever made for me.

Hybrid: Upgraded to an 818 H2 wit a Tensei White. I'm actually about 10 yards shorter with this club which is fine.

Irons: Oh how hate can turn to love. Took me til about May of last year to get used to them and now they will not be leaving the bag.

Wedges: I did switch to a 60* TaylorMade Hi Toe. Kept the same shafts and it's all good. Actually the 50* is my favorite club in the bag. I did order a 60* Vokey recently and waiting for it to arrive. Was messing around chipping with my 54* one day and really liked the bounce on it so I bought the same grind in a 60*.

Putter: Same

Anyone ever played these Boccieri heavy clubs?

Don’t fall for gimmicks. Most golfers already play clubs that are too heavy for them.

Im a part time lumberjack though.

Really I’m just curious about these clubs. Internet reviews aren’t always as reliable as 2+2. IMO.

If life returns more to "normal" and a couple other things fall into place I'm hoping to do a full bag fitting next year. For now, just swapping some things in and out of the bag from inventory - I have way too many surplus clubs.

ntnBO, do you have any recommendations for hybrids? I'm playing Taylormade 3 and 4 hybrids from about 2011. I have the 3 turned down a degree and the 4 turned up a degree (long iron is 5). I like them but they seem ancient and I feel like I should upgrade them.

There are lots of good hybrids out there, Ping, TM, Callaway, Titleist, Srixon. The question is, which one(s) are good for YOU.

I'm not terribly fond of TM and Callaway woods and hybrids for the average golfer because they tend to spin more than the others due to their lightweight construction. The one thing that Ping has compared to the others is a much flatter sole making it easier to make clean contact. Next time you go look at clubs compare the sole of the Ping hybrid to the others and you'll see what I mean.

Some hybrids are adjustable while others are not. Only reason you need an adjustable hybrid is if you just can't make the gaps work with the fixed brands.

So just go look at those five I mentioned and hopefully hit them as well. Let your feedback guide you. Never buy a club you don't like the look of.
