I think this is my favorite of the three, in particular because of the shape the greens were in. Layout was great Fairways were the most playable of the three, mostly because the other two were so tightly mowed. I was never in a bunker all day so I can't really comment on those. There were a number of risk/reward shots which makes the course more interesting to me. One par 5 played around 520y or so and it wrapped around marshy area. Cut off as much or as little as you want. I went big and had 148y left. If I don't make it I am hitting 3 from the tee. I think we saw the cart girl 5 times during the round. Pace of play was excellent, never waited and we were a threesome.
Black Rock
First off this is a private course so it is difficult to compare to the other two, especially since this is a super high end private. Initiation fee is $130k, I didn't find out how much the monthly dues are. You almost have to have properly on the course to get in, otherwise you are on a wait list and you can get jumped if someone buys a house there. These houses are not cheap either. We saw "cabins" that they rent. They are $20k/month. Our host for the outing winters in Scottsdale and Palm Springs and is a member of Silverleaf and La Quinta. I will say we are glad to know him now for sure. For being a high end CC the members are super down to earth as far as I could see. Super friendly even though they are worth hundreds of millions.
Now to the course. The greens are excellent and are just a touch slower than Circling Raven. Fairways are bent and cut super tight. It took be a few holes before I started striking my irons well. Rough is Kentucky bluegrass. Honestly I wasn't in the rough much so I couldn't tell you how tough it was to hit out of
. Front nine is kinda meh IMO but the back nine is one of the better I have ever played. The first par 5 on the front has an elevation drop of at least 100 feet. You just have to hit your tee shot around 200y before the huge drop. I clipped a tree and wasn't sure it would make it but it barely cleared. Member says wait for it, and literally 20 seconds later it appears at the end of the fairway. The course is really player friendly, almost to it's detriment. You can hit a good or bad shot and it could wind up in the same place around the green. I will have to throw up some pics of the back 9 when i get back home. Great mix of holes. Overall this course has the best set of par 3's I think I have ever played.
Gamble Sands
talk about in the middle of nowhere. You go through the middle of an apple orchard to get to the course. It's about a 2.5 hour drive from Spokane. Accommodations are limited but I assume they are building more. The second course is currently being built and they have a 14 hole par 4 course. I guess I am spoiled with Bandon's par 3 course but this one is not nearly as good. I did take putter off of two of the holes and it ended up better than my regular shot.
The course is really good. It sits on the hillside overlooking the Columbia River valley. Fairways are super, super wide and it really did remind me a lot of Bandon (same designer). Tee shots and approaches to greens have one good side and one bad side to approach many of them. If there is a bunker sitting on one side then there is a mound on the other kicking balls to the green. You can play the ground game on this course if you follow the right path. For example one of the par 3's was 216y. I hit 6 iron about 10 yards short of the green (big elevation drop) and it took the mounding and would up 15 feet away. There are three legitimate holes you can drive the green. The 2nd hole was 307y downhill. You just need to clear a bunker about 240y from the tee box with a little left to right action. I wound up having 30 feet for eagle. The next driveable one I hit driver over the next tee box left of green and never found it. That one I think if you hit it 230y it would roll on. After seeing that hole I would play it totally different. The last driveable one was around 285y but there is a bunker fronting the green. I hit a perfect drive pin high just off the green to the right. The par 5's were a good mix including a 633y hole. Hit a great drive and my best 3 wood of the day and had 50y left. Probably as close as you can get. The tee shot you hit over a hill and then the elevation drops. Reminded me of 10 on Pacific Dunes.
If I had to rank them I would put them in the order I played them, Circling Raven, Black Rock a close second, then Gamble Sands. I will def come back to Gamble Sands once they build the second course.
