Picked the courses that I was playing by using the Top 100 Public Courses arcording to Golf Digest. Had a rain check froim Wolf Creek that I had to use by Labor Day. The rain check was from last year when the temp was around 115 and humid and the front 9 took about 2.5 hours. Thought I was going to die. I have played Wolf Creeek before and the course was in great shape. Shot a 96.

Stayed in Mesquite that night and drove to Grand Junction, Co to play the Golf Club at Redlands Mesa. According to Golf Digest, this course is ranked 17th in the nation. Really didn't play a bad course on this trip and this was well worth the money. Shot a 95. After the round, I continued driving out to the Colorado - Nebraska border.

The next day I played Quarry Run outside Lincoln Nebraska. The round started out super with being 1 under par after 6 holes, Started with 5 pars and the 6th hole was a 470 yard par 5. Hit a decent drive then put my 2nd shot about 10 feet from the hole and missed the eagle putt. Ended up shooting 90.

Finished up the drive by playing a private country club in West Des Moines. It was a fun round that I played with 2 members. The club was Glen Oaks and it was another case of a course being in excellent condition. Probably due to all the rain in the midwest.

In Chicago on Thursday of the following week I was supposed to play Medinah. I've played courses 1 and 3, but never course 2. Unfortunately due to thunderstorms, ended up spending 2 hours in the bar.

After the almost round at Medinah, I headed down to Merrillville, IN to spend Friday and Saturday at the boats playing Omaha. Nothing really eventful there. Did spend Friday evening at the new Horseshoe poker room playing a pleasant Omaha/8 game. The poker room was very nice.

Sunday, I played the Glen Club in Glenview. According to the scorecard, one of the Golf Magazines ranks them in the top 100. Started out the round with 7-7-6. A 3 putt on the 3rd hole did not help. Final score was 87.

On Tuesday, left work at 3 and played Steeplechase in Mundelein. That was the round where I barely could do anything wrong. Through 12 holes I was 1 over par and ended up shooting 78. This was the 4th time I ever broke 80. A double bogey on 18 prevented a better score.

Wednesday was the start of the trip back to Phoenix. The first day I drove down to Tulsa, OK. The next morning, I played Cherokee Casinos course - Cherokee Hills. Shot a 99 and this was the round from hell. Played as a single and eventually joined up with 2 other singles. In front of us were 2 foursomes. One was 4 women and the other were 4 guys. To say that they were slow was an understatement. Not once did they give us the courtesy of letting us play through. Course was in nice shape but they need to do a better job of course management.

After this round of golf, it was back on the road to Santa Fe, New Mexico. On Friday I played Black Mesa. Golf Digest ranks the course 44. Originally, I was going to play around 2:30 but on the drive there I saw lightning and dark clouds. Decided to drive up to Taos for lunch. Around 5:15 when I was driving back, the skies had lightened up and I decided to try to get in 18 holes. Playing by myself, I ended up playing in about 2 hours and shot an 89. Course was in great shape and the only negative was blind shots.

Saturday I played Pueblo de Cochiti just south of Santa Fe. Course was fun and ended up paired with 3 others. Shot a 92. After the round I drove down to Albuquerque.

Sunday I played Paa Ko Ridge. The course was another great course to play. Shot a 92 and should have done a little bit better.

Any of the course that I played on this trip I would go back to. The most expensive round of golf was $100.

Fourth consecutive round in the 70s today.

39-37-76 at Detwiler GC Par 71.

12/14 fairways
9 GIR 29 putts

I hit more fairways, but my drives were shorter. I had the fade working though I hate that swing. The short game/wedge game really came through for me today plus I hit one of my shots of the summer.

130 yards to the flagstick over a very large tree. My playing partner urged me to play to the left side of the green, but I knew better of course. Opened the face of my 8-iron a touch and went after it. I somehow hit it flush and the ball just clear the tree, landed twenty feet past the hole and spun back to about 12 feet! Birdie and a skin!

I won my the final match in my flight in my Club's annual match play tournament 3 and 2 at San Juan Oaks. I made 10 pars and posted 88 ( I love me some match play.) Next I play the winner of the 3rd flight and from there would play the winner of the Championship flight for the right to play 36 holes against the match play winners from 4 other clubs. I've played a ton of match play over the years and think I have a decent shot...

83 42-41 on a par 70 35-35 course. Best round for me so far and I definitely feel like I wasted quite a few shots. Should have had my first ever sub-80 round today.

36-42 78 (34). Club championship round one.

Hit some wayward drivers on the back, but didn't make a double until 18. That was also my only three putt and I was okay with it - 80 feet + and a vicious downhill slope the last 20 feet. Almost impossible to get it close.

This is dumb, but it could be that a lot of my putting woes are caused by head movement. I focused hard on keeping it still, looking at where the ball was long after it was gone, and the results were (for me) very solid.

Putting everything out certainly makes the rounds take longer.

okay new course rating question:

Colonial Country Club is :
7,010 yards
74 rating
132 slope

It holds a regular PGA Tour event, was considered for the Ryder Cup, and held a U.S. Open. I am a 2.5 handicap according to the internet. I would probably be happy with anything 82 or below here and would be ecstatic with anything in the 70s.

My home course is a par 70, 71.8 rating, 137 slope course. It is 6368 yards. It holds nothing but U.S. Am qualifiers and other USGA qualifier stuff. If I shoot an 82, I played poorly. I am happy with breaking 80, but basically a good round needs to be below 77.

Why is the slope higher on my home course. I don't understand. Is it trying to tell me that my course is harder than Colonial?

sorry, should google before i post...

answered my questions if anyone cares

89 (38). Fail. Pretty much everything sucked.

For some reason, they decided to verticut the greens so they were a heckuva lot faster than yesterday.

went for a range session with coworkers yesterday but range was closed, so jumped on the course for 4 holes. no warmup or anything.

first hole par 4, nice drive that ended on a sideways awkward lie. hooked the approach into the woods, made 7.

next hole, par 4. sliced my drive in play, sliced approach oob. made 7.

next hole par 5. good drive. fated a couple of shots for 50 yards each. hit a nice 9iron just off the fringe, good little chip that the slope kept rolling, 2-putt for another 7.

last hole, par 3 with a tight green and pin. hit the best shot of the day with my 7i, drain a 12 footer for birdie and called it quits.

only my 3rd birddie ever, too bad it won't factor into my handicap, since it was not a full round.

all my mis-hits were with the 5h. go figure. I am usually very confident with it. but I am putting A LOT better!!!

Shot a 102 on Monday. I made the turn in 46, then the wind came up and I basically collapsed on the last six holes. I needed only to double the last three holes (all par 4s) to break 100 and went 6-7-8. Ugh.

It was a good driving day, though, and a decent putting day. My problem was my short game was abysmal, coming up way short on nearly every chip.

I play in a mixed golf league with my wife at a real cow pasture call Sultana Golf course. It's basically a pitch-n-putt but has a couple of >175 holes to make it a little interesting. The league is a "fun league", there are no good golfers, but it's a lot of fun and there's lots of cheap beer. Yesterday was the last night of the league, and our 4-some was playing the front 9. We got to the 2nd hole, which is ~150 yards. My wife is on the tee with her driver, which she always pushes right. Another of the leagues 4-some was on the back side, and they were on the 12th tee, a similar length hole. Here's an overhead google map shot:

On the 12th tee, a man we'll call Dennis hits his tee shot within 5 foot of our pin. We of course give him all kinds of grief. My wife proceeds to nail her driver, and the ball goes onto their green and in the hole for a "wrong-hole" hole-in-one.

I refused to buy drinks afterwards, since she ended up with a triple bogie 6 with her hole-in-one.

Outstanding!
I would not have bought drinks either.

We had a guy at our club skull one out of a greenside bunker on #14 and it went in the hole on the nearby #4 green.
Crazy game

So does she have to take an unplayable lie to get out of the cup on the wrong hole?

Did she pitch off the green or putt off before pitching?

In this league no one would have cared where she dropped it, but I made her take nearest relief off the green, no nearer the hole.

played 9 holes of twilight in the slowest foursome on earth. the girl in my cart was a bit rusty but passable. the other two hadn't played in 5-10 years.

had my usual terrible shooting round except for par 3's. on hole #4, where i made birdie on monday, i stuck the 7 iron to 10 feet. but my putt went 1/2" left. made par. #7 is a downhill 124 yd par 3. like 80 feet downhill. it was last hole of the day, can't see ****. i hit a soft 9 iron (i only brought a travel bag of 3w, 5h, 7i, 9i, sw, putter). i think i pulled it just left of the green, but it's dark and i lost view of the ball. i hit another one just for kicks, this time adjusted a bit right. my partners tell me that they see it in the middle of the green.

we go down there. and i see my first ball 2 inches away from the hole (which is next to left fringe), and my second having rolled to the right fringe. lol, i missed a hole in one by 2 inches while playing practically blindfolded. oh, well, tap-in birdie and second in 3 days isn't bad.

played at lake forest gc in ann arbor. we started from the back nine and i started off pretty bad with a 48. i have been really struggling for the past few weeks. but then some how totally turned it around with a finishing 37 (+1) for my best 9 hole score ever. so 48-37 for a 85.
it felt great to hit fairways, greens and make putts!

81 (40). Hit a lot of greens (14/18) but wasn't close to the hole on most of them. Your basic keep the ball in play kind of round, only with a couple three and four putts.

Example of putting fail:

On the hardest hole on the course, I'm on in regulation. Unfortunately, I'm on the back of the green after hitting one especially pure. The pin is front right (from my perspective, left). There is a huge swale in the middle of the green. The money putt is hit hard enough to get through the swale (which will push it left) and up the far side, where a gentle downhill slope will also push the ball right. Fail putt number one (red line) isn't hit hard enough - the swale grabs it and throws it left. Fail putt number two (purple line) is too hard, isn't thrown much left and catches a steeper downhill and right slope away from the hole. There is very little margin for error - this is a lousy leave - and almost no way to get it close.

I chose fail putt #1, too weak. The ball went hard left, off the green, through the fringe into some thick rough. Yay golf.

67ish (that's what the card said but I dunno) on a par 60 "executive" course. 12 par 3s, 6 par 4s. I'd never played the course before. Home course was closed for the day.

The par 3s were pretty good, a nice assortment. The par 4s were uniformly of the W T F variety.

Seriously.

Sorry to tard up the thread with more MSPaint, but I couldn't find the course on Google Earth. One of the par 4s on the back nine was just incredible. Basically, I thought I'd found my own personal nirvana - check this hole out:

From the tips, the card said 245 yards. Standing on the tee, you could see a small patch of fairway up ahead some undefined distance. The area between the tee and the fairway at the corner wasn't really maintained. No distances anywhere. You couldn't see the green - had to ride ahead to check it out. Hard dogleg left. A wall of scruffy trees down the left side, so a fader would have zero room. Possible but hard to get a shot over the top, and who knows how far you'd have to hit it - I didn't bring my calculator. The rest of the hole was pretty much lined with weedy crap, like the course was cut out of a swamp.

Whoever designed this hole must have been on acid. Two reasonable options that I could see - hit 8 iron-wedge, or hit the mother of all hooks.

Hook? I got that shot.

Seriously. I wouldn't bet a nickel on myself to hit a slice or fade on demand, but if you ask for an 80 yard hook I'll wager my entire life savings.

This is my kind of hole.

I hit that kind of shot. Started out down the right side, slung left like a perfectly thrown frisbee, hit in what looked like the absolutely ideal spot - as far as we could tell, in the middle of the fairway. Hit the ground and kicked hard left like it was going to run up beautifully toward the green. Lost sight.

Drove up. Couldn't find it.

Fail.

I couldn't be too pissed off, though, since I had just made a birdie with style - 311 yard "par 4". Cold topped my drive about a buck twenty, then flushed a 5 iron to 18 inches. Just the way the pros do it, right?

Fun day. (oh, and thanks Aces)

So this was my 3rd and 1/2 time playing. Best score so far and it was on a links style course. My driver was awesome today. 7 fairways, 2 GIRs... but a lot of balls slightly off the fairway. I need to improve my short game. Way too inconsistent and I don't even know the distance of my clubs.

I basically spent all season trying to peak for the Lost Dunes round. A top notch private course in Bridgman, Michigan, I fell in love with it last year (posted pics in the golf course photo thread), and was determined to play much better after last year's 115 showing from the tips.

Came into it on fire, shooting a season best 87 the day before. While lightning concerns caused us to stop after nine, I'm really happy with a hard fought 47 with 3 pretty lame just-out-of-play penalties on a day that the pin placements were particularly brutal for the Club Championship earlier that day. Beautiful course, very happy with the round.

Then, today, played at one of the more poorly designed courses you will ever see. Had multiple shots in the fairway that required basically a punch out to a different area of the fairway to have an angle at the green. Several of my penalties were, in fact, 2 shot penalties as you could go out of play mere feet from the fairways, then have to drop and make that same punch shot into play. Terrible layout, inconsistent greens, and frankly, while I didn't at all play well, I don't think this one was really entirely my fault.

Good news is that I've re-found the longer, straighter drive that had recently disappeared after a solid 3-week stretch in June.
