37 - 39 = 76

Closer to 72 than 80. Missed three very makeable birdie putts, edged a couple more. Double 18 when I clipped a tree and got a horrible kick to stimey.

Porter_did you implement your own course management advice from a few days ago?
if you did, care to share how it went?

zero bogies, zero doubles
zero putts, under par every hole
woke up early for a 6:06 time (scheduled by a guy i play with once or twice a month), check in at the course and find out he only booked the time for a single, not four. the tee sheet was full for the next hour and i didn't want to wait.

40-40-80. 1 birdie, 2 double bogeys. 70.3/133/6050.

More good shots than bad and I putted decently. Even had a couple good chips. It was a pretty solid round and an enjoyable day.

Definitely. In fact, I had nearly the exact same situation as this:

Quote:
Short par 4. I was only 115 out, but was on the right side of the fairway and hole was tucked behind an elevated trap. From my angle you couldn't safely hit it left of the pin, as it's another highly sloped right-to-left green. I stupidly went right at the pin, but missed by a foot and hit a downward slope that shot my ball all the way back and into the fescue. I could have easily purposefully hit a ball short of the green, and no matter where it ended up, would have had a chip up and decent shot at up and down.
A bit different in that the hole was left-center of the green, but from my angle to the right, I would have had to hit it over the corner of the trap and land in the PERFECT spot for it to catch the hill and roll near the cup; anything different rolls off the green to a difficult up and down. So I played it smart, purposefully hit it short of the green with a good leave, and got up and down.

My driver was on, so most course management decisions came down to something pretty simple: don't go right at the damn pin. Unless I was 60 yards in or closer, the goal was to "aim for the middle of the goal post," and the goal posts were set by the "safe shot" (that's a helpful visualization trick I learned from my pro). My irons miss is a push, so I orient with that in mind based on trouble left or right.

This is course-dependent, but I also thought a lot about club selection and how, at my course, it's almost always best to be short of the green. Up-and-downs at my course are generally much easier and straightforward if you're short.

I did pat myself on the back (but didn't deserve because the decision should have been easy) for one decision. I hit it long but pulled it left. "In theory" with my shot shape I could have hit it left of the giant tree between me and the green and faded it down towards the green. But there's a lot of junk in between, and not much room for error. So I took my lumps and pitched it down to 70 yards. Didn't get up and down so still bogeyed, but that's better than the double or worse that could have happened.

I'll do a bit better, here's a video of the hole (I don't mind sharing where I am; it's easy enough to figure out):

Fly-over obviously doesn't do it justice (or give any indication at all). There's a ridge nearly right down the middle that slopes hard right-to-left all the way down. Flattens out a bit on the left 1/4 where you technically CAN stop it, but it's hard to do.

This is on the description, which made me chuckle for failing to follow the advice:

"With a right hand hole location the tee shot needs to be on the left side of the fairway to get the ball close to the hole on your approach shot."

If there's no one playing it, the best play honestly might be to play into the neighboring fairway to the left. Easily the best angle in. Problem is they currently have the grass super grown out, and it's a lost ball more than half the time if you get in it (I really miss the length of grass on the right-side hill in the video....right now it's unplayable).

a ~300 yard par 4 needs some sort of protection, and it looks like that hole has it. two solid irons and happy with par

42 (par 36). No birdies, 1 double bogey.

The good news, I got up and down on the first four holes and five times in total. The bad news, I hit zero greens in regulation. Doh.

Quite happy with par. I’m sure I’ve birdied that hole, but I can’t remember the last time; it’s almost impossible to have a straight putt, even from two feet. By contrast #15 is a 295 par 4 and I’ve birdied it three times in the past month (it has some very difficult putts with the wrong leave).

40 - 40 = 80

Kind of a disappointing score because I felt I played much better. Started on the back and I parred the two hardest holes on the course, but bogeyed two of the easiest. Same on the front: doubled the easiest hole on the course after popping up my drive and pulling a six iron into the heavy stuff, bogeyed the par 3 after hitting in bunker.

Feeling decent about my game. Lots of golf starting tomorrow with my course’s annual big match play invite, which brings in a bunch of competitive amateurs from all over (most annoyingly, some college players who hit it a gazzilion miles; but they can’t go to the cocktail parties, so who really wins?). I’m too young to be in any other category than open, so I’m going to get my ass kicked, but it will be fun. Saturday qualifying will be the unique round where I’d be totally ok not shooting well….

41 on a par 34 2738 yard track. Walked it after work, and actually played another 7 after, but was just working on shots and not keeping score. Approach play is improving (though still hitting hooks on occaision). Putting is still atrocious, but felt pretty good about the round.

Then, this morning, I got the email I was dreading...

Another year, still no dice.

Ha yeah I wonder how many people felt the pain of that "Unfortunately...."

I was in that group also. Would love to know how many applications there are and how many get chosen. Am I trying to hit a one outer with one to come, running perfect-perfect, or am I trying to flop a royal flush twice in an hour here?

My uncle has “won” four times.

I was talking with a friend recently and he was wondering if it would greatly increase his chances if he switched from trying to get two tickets to one.

That’s pretty cool, I put in for ANWA too. No email yet so that means no luck. I’ll get my rejection whenever they get to my part of the alphabet.

Probably not....the "congrats" emails have already gone out, too (or at least some of them have).
