First round in about 9 months. Back 9 was about what I was shooting when I left off, so that's nice. First two holes went 10-8, so that pretty much killed my dreams.

If I play 10 more rounds this year I'll consider that enough of a commitment to buy a new driver. Old trusty 7 year old steel/steel won't do.

i've not played full rounds recently, plus partners flaking out on me on league nights. mostly twilight, anywhere from 3 to 12 holes.

starting to putt a lot better. short game a lot better. I practice 10-30 yarders with wedges in my backyard. driver is on hold until I can squeeze in another lesson into my busy schedule.

brag; bought my gf clubs and now she seems to drag me to the range every day, and I am happy to oblige. after giving her pointers and severely limiting her backswing, she started to hit pretty straight and in the air off the tee after only 3 times on the range. 80 yards with the 7i. she mostly hits hybrid/7i/9i/pw and tees up every time. somehow she managed a bogey on 300 yard downhill par 4. I was very impressed.
Where's the video of her swing?

Angel Park Cloud 9 par-3 course with the g/f. 1 birdie, 4 pars, 1 bogey and 3 doubles. Two of the doubles were sand related and the third was tee shot that hit the green but was hot and bounced over on an island green. Meh.

Had my best ever 9 holes yesterday...

Shot a 3 under 32. Best previous was 36.

Bogey on 1 with a bad drive in the trees, had a chance to save par but missed the putt.

Birdie on 2,3,4,5. Also a new record for me, 4 birds in a row! Number 2 was a 20 footer downhill from off the green. 3 was a par three tap in. 4 was two foot tricky little putt and 5 was also a long putt.

Also a couple great par saves...

stats:

only 1/6 fairways hit!
7/9 gir
only 13 putts

And I spent 30 min on putting right before the round! I have some work to do on my drive as you can see, but it only really got me in trouble on the first hole and cost me a stroke on a short par 5.

wow congrats....why did you only play 9?

..my last 2 rounds are 82-80.

I had basically 9 3 putts during the 82...7 from 15 feet off the fringe, and 2 real ones. One of my worst putting days ever. An 82 was actually quite remarkable considering I am looking at birdie on the first 6 holes of the back 9 and end up +6 through 6. I had to eagle the easy par 5 18th for a 79 and I drove it to 170 but obviously had no stance b/c of a dumb tree. Then I 3 putted for bogey. gg.

in my 80, i had 28 putts, but I missed 3 4 footers. At least I made one nice putt for par from 20 feet. I started hitting myself in the head like Woody Austin after a 360 lipout on the 17th...that was fun. Also, my chip in attempt on #18 hit the flagstick and rolled down a giant hill off the green, so that was cool.

So frustrating....my confidence is completely shot with the putter. Tee to green I am the most consistent I have ever been.

Up to 15 feet off of the fringe you're putting? Just my two cents, but you might want to reconsider using your putter on the fringe. If you're chipping isn't consistent enough, then practice!

Montreux (Reno)

PGA Reno-Tahoe Open Pro-AM, played with Steve Pate. I shot a ugly 75 w/ 5 birdies, Pate shot about around 78-79...he had a rough day.

Prediction: Michelle Wie doesn't break 150 in 2 rounds here, no way!

Thanks, played late at night, would have been too dark to do 18, my best ever is 77 so I think I would have crushed it!!

Curious and serious. Do the amateurs play from the same tee boxes as the pros during pro ams? (I assume yes, but it occurred to me maybe not.) Impressive regardless, even more so if from the same tees.

Do amateur players have to have official handicaps below some # to play in a pro-am?

No, we played up a box...

For this tourney, any am could play...

Played Empire Lakes today (they host a nationwide tour event)

72.1/133 from the blues

shot a 100 with 29 putts but took 8! penalties (tin cupped it on 18 with two balls back to back in the water going for the green in two)

was hitting the ball well enough that I probably should have been in the low 90s which was goal going in.

83 at the U Course. I started off +9 through 6 holes, then went +3 the rest of the way. I honestly felt like I could've shot a very good score the way I struck the ball through the last 12 holes, had I rolled in a couple more putts I could've shot even par on the back 9.

44 on a 3000 yard (9 holes) very tight course...... the good: some nice bunker shots, good approach shots. the bad: no putts made over 5 feet. spraying my drives. 3 strokes on penalties or chip back to fairway....

Found out there's a course 10 minutes away with a nice deal going on...

$29/month for unlimited range balls and "group clinics." It also allows you to play with a cart for $10 before 7am or after 6pm.... but I probably won't hit the course until I'm a bit better. Well, as soon as I can stop slicing every drive.

Not sure... I've never played there. I thought most golf courses open at like 5:30 or so. I just started playing golf a couple of weeks ago and have only played 18 holes at a muni in different city.

Edit: If the online tee times are correct, the course opens at 6am. So I guess you have an hour opening to play and replays are $5. It doesn't really matter for me though, since I'm not going on the course until I learn how to drive. $29 for unlimited balls means I only have to go hit 3 buckets for the plan to pay off.

They have another deal where its $49 for the same features, except you can play anytime with a cart for $15. Weekend rate is $45, weekday is $35. I'm not sure if those even include the cart. So that plan is worth it if you play the course 2 times a month.

wow those are some sick deals, wish we had something like that around here here.

shot a very disappointing 89 at lake forrest gc in ann arbor. had 7 three putts. and missed 3 five foot birdy putts. also had some bad luck in which my nice drive hits an electrical box sticking up on the side of the fairway which then pings pongs and hides me behind a tree, so i had to punch out instead of going for the green on my second shot. i asked my playing partners if i can get a free drop because thats just bull****, but they werent sure of our leauge rules on that. also, missed my first hole in one ever on a 117 uphill par3. tee shot landed 5 feet short of flag took a small bouce and hit the flag and came to a stop about 3 feet away, of course i missed the birdy putt. one of my most frustrating rounds ever.

i just bought my oddyssey sabertooth putter last week and have absolutely no feel with the putter. the insert just has so much bounce in it that when i barely tap my ball it takes off fast of fthe putter face. last week when i bought it, i took it out to the greens and hit 5 different putters for like 2 hours. it felt so good at the shop. anyways, im gonna sell it me thinks.

Played the semi-final of my club's match play tournament today at Coyote Creek south of San Jose. Drove the ball awesome, had 3 sand saves but hit some horrible short iron shots and was 2 down heading to 17 after being 2 up on the 13th tee. My opponent makes a mistake on 17, I get up and down for par to extend the match, then make a 15 footer with 2 feet of break on 18 to send it to extra holes and I finish off the comeback with a formality birdie to end it on the 19th. Felt good to hit some good shots down the stretch but if I could have hit a 9 iron within 30 feet of my target at some point it wouldn't have come to that. Posted an 82 with 3 birdies in regulation....

There are some holes at that course that I hate, mostly on the back 9. I hate #15, there's just nowhere to hit your tee shot, and if your tee shot isn't perfect you have almost no shot to the green. Although driving #5 is pretty fun.
