A rule argument that did not go my way set me off on the 5th hole. I sliced a tee shot and it landed on the left side of a cart path, in an industrial area of the course. I'm right handed and would normally get nearest relief to the left. Problem is, if I drop on the left side of the path, my shot is blocked by a power pole from lines running through this area of the course. I'm left with no decently playable shot. I felt the pole blocked my relief and I should be able to drop nearest relief, on the right side of the cart path. My playing partner argued and would not give it to me. We where playing for small $$.

I tripled the hole and it all went downhill from there. I still won a little $$ from the F'er.
First you take relief from the cart path, find the nearest point no nearer the hole and then drop within 1 clublength no nearer the hole.

Then if necessary you take relief from the power pole. Find the nearest point of relief no nearer the hole then drop within 1 clublength no nearer the hole.

It’s two totally separate processes, you can’t not take the closest point from the cart path just because something funky is there. Your playing partner was basically correct and you may owe him an apology.

Putting overall pretty good. Tough driving course and I spazzed on a few but need to keep grinding to be able to hit tee shots with a scorecard in my pocket. Have a one day event Wednesday so get to get right back on the horse.
Well that didn’t go great. 40-47 87 (par 71). Started off fine. Driver was a mess and we were playing decently long tees so I kept swinging it - only hit 2 fairways but was able to salvage some pars when I wasn’t racking up penalty strokes and re-teeing.

Was +3 through 8 with a mega par save on 8 getting up and down from 75 yards after a duck hooked tee ball when I proceed to thin-push my drive on 9 that never covers any land so need to make par on a second ball just to save double. Then slice it OB on 10 but made birdie on the second ball for a bogie that felt great. When that putt rolled in I was hopeful I could use it as momentum but no dice. Pushed on on 11 into some tall stuff but I had a swing; came up just short and then hit my worst chip of the day and 3 putted for double from 12 feet. 3-putter for double on 13 after chipping to 5 feet and missing a bunny for bogie when my par putt got yanked left of the hole and rolled out.

Then on 15 I had two more low awful drives that didn’t clear the forced carry and made a 10 with my 3rd tee shot finally just about being in play (had to play out of the hazard). Steered it home from there with a par par bogie finish but man it was a challenge today. It was warm and not a good/easy course to walk - I’ll know a lot more for any future events there.

Oh well; no serious golf for a while. Keep working.

And my instructor is taking a new college coaching job so I prob need to find someone else to work with :-/

Hang in there!

39-40-79

Just god awful. I played late in the day which I never do, cause I just hate playing in the pm. Figured I better since we are expecting rain all day Thursday and Friday and it's my only chance to practice before my next event.

Lone lowlight followed by highlight day was on #2. I hit a 3h about 2 grooves thin off of the tee which caught a tree about 100y off of the tee. Had 234y left and took the same 3h and hit it to 10 feet, and made the birdie putt.

I believe maybe incorrectly. That if the right side of the path had been closer relief than the double relief on the left side that becomes an option for me. But he would not give me relief from the pole either 2 club lengths left or on the right side. I offered both.

I also believe that I had the option of relief in a straight line back from the pin to my ball, no closer to the hole. Which would have been almost the exact same location on the right side of the path as I may have mistakenly thought was an option above. Maybe I wasn't clear in my OP about this option. But I felt I had a couple free relief options and should not have been forced to drop where the pole interfered with me taking a full swing.

Basically I was playing with a control freak. I realized it today when 3 of the 4 of us played again and the control freak did not get invited because he pissed everyone off.

I have no problem with following the rules as best as reasonable people can figure them out, but they are also complex with many interpretations. There is no need be a nit and ruin peoples day over minor rulings during friendly rounds of golf...

I also don't understand why I would owe an apology to someone who forced me to take a shot with a power pole preventing me from taking a normal swing. I believe I had options...

You certainly get stance and swing relief from the pole. It’s the nearest point of relief no closer to the hole, then drop within 1 clublength no closer to the hole.

There is no such thing as double relief, there is no such thing as 2 clublengths when taking a free drop, in this case there is no such thing as a line straight back.

The two separate procedures as I described last post are basic and simple. That is what should have occurred according to the rules of golf.

Now it sounds as though both parties were in error in regards to the correct procedure. It sucks that a round got ruined, but if people are going to play for money, they need to at least know the basic rules.

Yearly charity tournament put on by the local beer distributor. As you can guess, a drunk fest. I started on 12 (which is actually a par 5, not sure why they have it as a par 4). Don't mind bogeys on 13 and 14, which are the toughest on the course, but the bogey on 15 was dumb.

I attribute that bad stretch starting on 4 to alcohol. I can't pull a ball if I tried, but get some booze in me and it's pull-pull-pull. Hit in the water on the left on 4, which I've literally never done. 5, 6, and 9 should have all been pars or better.

So this format is fun but frustrating...it's a two man best ball with a partner you're playing with, but your score is combined with another random twosome after the round for final scores. I played with a +1 and we shot 65 (we barely used the others shot individually....we matched each other on almost every hole), which isn't great but thought we could get a decent draw....we didn't. They shot 72.

Slow work day so I decided to pull my first score from this thread (from 2015). I guess I have improved a bit

33-39-72

1 eagle, 2 birdies

Clearly peaked too early for my tourney tomorrow. This round was a qualifier for a tourney in two weeks. 2-man best ball. We strategized and I played up a tee from the whites (getting 0 shots) and partner played the tip (getting 9 shots). Best round I have ever seen him play. We both shot even par 72. 65 gross best ball, 59 net. Didn't hurt that I started eagle, birdie.

lol, currently t1, need to be top 11 to qualify. Apparently you only received part of your handicap, so we were -9 net. Never heard of not getting your full number in a fourball event, but whatever, it does help lower handicaps. Part of 0 is still 0 for me.

Different fourball event today (and different partner). 44-35-79.

Yeah, I shot 83 today, so not a ton of help. We had to take a double and a triple on the card. I did reach the 543y par 5 7th. Had 25 feet for eagle and missed it low. Would have been good for a skin.

37-40-77. 1 birdie, no double bogeys. 69.6/129/6025 yards.

Fun to have a decent ball striking day. Should have made more putts.

Never played this course before. I really didn't strike my irons that great today. As you can tell from 5 to 9 I was actually really struggling to get the ball in the air, Not sure what happened, It really doesn't help when you're waiting a few mins per shot because of the slow play. They let us through on the 12th. 9th was just terrible. Landed in green side bunker, Bunker shot no sand all ball and went into this thick rough had to drop chipped on ended up 3 putting.

Played pretty good on the back still wasn't hitting my irons that solid but made it work. Holed out on 16 for a birdie. 17th short Par 4 water down the right, Decided to go with a driver as I didn't a driver right all day. As always left it out right and bounced into the water.

Being a new course I never played felt I may have played a bit to passive off the tee. Few tee shots I could of taken more club, Putted half decent only 1 3 putt on 9.

42-40-82

0 birdies, 1 double

Made zero putts. Partner shot 83, our best ball was 78. Not exactly a good ham and egg situation.

When it is tipped out with a 2 club wind = tough! It was a shotgun today so our starting hole was a 217y par 3 into a 1 club wind with water all the way short and right of the green. Also had a 454y par 4 into a 2 club wind. Hit probably my best drive of the day and still had 180y left. Hit a beauty of a 6 iron to around 20 feet....and i left the birdie putt short.

what does one hit on an all carry 217y par 3 over water into 1 club wind?

if there's less trouble deep (i.e. no penalty) than there is short i'm hitting 2h or 3w.

I took a little off of a 4 hybrid. I should have hit it full. I did cover the water though.

Edit: There is room deep but you run the risk of having a severe downhill chip back to the green from some iffy rough.

36 (par 36). 2 birdies, no double bogeys.

Well that was fun. Had a third birdie putt hang on the lip. Hit a couple loose shots but never in danger of making a double or worse. Didn't have time to play a full 18 and it wouldn't have mattered since we would have been chased off by a thunderstorm that hit later anyway.

Driver, probably followed immediately by a trip to the drop zone.

39-40-79 +7
1 birdie, 1 double

New personal best at this course (broke 80 once before on my regular course, which is easier).

Pretty proud of myself, needed to finish par-bogey on the last 2 holes to break 80, and the 17th is an easy short (480 yds) par 5. But I 3-putted for bogey, which left me needing par on 18, which is a tough uphill Par 4 (410 yds).

On 18 I pushed driver into right rough, was blocked out by a tree so had to hit a low runner short left of the green. Got up and down for the par.

Fun round, ball striking was not great but it's amazing what making a few putts can do!

37-39-76 Par 69 +7

2 Birdies - 8 Pars - 7 Bogeys - 1 Double

Decent round for being a bit tired, Was back at my local.

Highlight of the round was one of my playing partners made a Hole in 1 on a Par 4, It's like 270ish to the green. Bunker in the usual landing area and bunkers protecting the green so you have to get the right line and then get a decent bounce before the green.

I actually thought it went through the green. I went over the back of the green to help him look for it. My other playing partner say's have you checked the hole, He goes and checks and boom.

Yeah sadly I think it would be driver for me. Would probably roll over the back if I clear the water, but I'm not covering the distance with a 3w.
