49-41-90. No birdies, a few doubles, 1 quad. 70.6/126/6150 yards

Variance fest continues.

42-38-80

1 birdie, 1 double

Played same course I played Friday. Made a 2-putt birdie on the hole I eagled previously. Did manage to get home in two on the 545y par 5. Not bad for rain soaked fairways.

Friday at Salish Cliffs (outside Olympia, Washington): 45-42 = 88

Saturday at Druid's Glen (Kent, Washington): 43-42 = 85

So my game doesn't travel well. Course management is generally a strength of mine, but I didn't know these courses and didn't really spend much time thinking things through, so ended up in tight spots way too often. I hit the ball really well, but had tons of penalty strokes. I also had a tough time getting used to the greens, which were different types of grass than I'm used to and much slower.

For anyone in the Seattle/Olympia area or visiting, I highly recommend Salish Cliffs, but would avoid Druid's Glen for the price (which is more than Salish). I played Druid's a few years ago and it was in one of the worst conditions I have ever played a golf course, rivaling the time I played Tetherow in Bend the summer their green's keeper ordered bootleg **** from China (the quote from the caddie) and killed most of their greens (most had roped off areas, and some weren't playable at all). I enjoyed the layout and was excited to play it again. While it's definitely improved, it's still in pretty bad shape and not very well taken care of, with divots and dead spots all over the place.

Salish Cliffs is a great course. played it once around a year after it opened and remember it being in fantastic shape, but don't remember specifics about green speed. that same trip we played McCormick Woods (which i do remember specifics about green speed: they were baked out and running like a pool table. absolutely no way to hold an elevated green on a chip if you missed it) and Gold Mountain Olympic. Olympic is likely one of the better city owned courses around. Spieth won the 2011 Jr. Am there, and UW has hosted tourneys there as well. Highly recommend Olympic.

42 (par 35). No birdies, 1 double, 1 triple.

One hole of extreme stupidity, one of awful chipping. Other than played decently.

Those Washington area courses are great. We've done a couple trips south of the border to that Bremerton and Olympia area.

Salish Cliffs
Home Course
Washington National
Trophy Lake
Gold Mountain (36 holes)

Plenty of others.

I should have played yesterday. One od the guys in the group said its gonna start raining at 8am so we didnt play. Didn't start raining til 3p, damn it.

Good news is the hurricane/tropical storm was a nothing burger here. Maybe a few inches of rain. Should be good to play tomorrow. Probably good cause my body aches putting up the hurricane ****.

50-44-94 (par 72)

Not what the guy at the range who solicited my advice because he thought I was hitting so well that morning would expect! The highlight was a string of 5 pars in a row beginning on hole 8, but which ultimately ended when I found myself in a diabolical lie in the rough on the dogleg left #13, but managed to save bogey. I probably should have taken relief since the lie was in a portion of a depression that I'm guessing could be considered part of a ground squirrel's burrow, whose hole was right in the middle of it.

Speaking of ground squirrels, I was musing about how cute all the baby ones running around were at this time of year, but on the #16 par 5 I appeared to have hit one with my 3-wood approach, because when I got to my ball there was one hanging on for the last minutes of his life a couple yards away. I was rattled the rest of the hole and made a quad bogey.

My short game was quite good if nothing else. I think I had only one three putt the entire round and hit a handful of good chip shots and a really good short pitch.

Had probably my best round ever today.

38-41-79 Par 72
11 pars, 1 birdie, 4 bogeys, 2 doubles

I had broken 80 once before, but it was just after the courses reopened during the peak of the pandemic and they had raised cups, where the ball just had to hit the cup for putts to count as good. So I always had an asterisk on that one. This was my first legit sub-80 round under normal conditions.

Anyway was striking my irons great. Two major mistakes on the back 9 or it could actually have been a better score... On a short par 3 I hooked an 8i into a water hazard and ended up with a 5. And on one long Par 4 I pulled my drive and hit a tree, ball bounced back to just behind the ladies' tee, ended up with another double.

Very nice round, congrats!

But I gotta ask, did you follow the “rules” on the hole mentioned above?

Haha no although I definitely heard about it from my playing partners!

No Score

Was just myself this am battling incoming rain. Hopped around and played a few holes but mainly was on course practice for chipping and lag putting, and some drives. Didn't exactly go great, especially with the woods and hybrids. Guess I better work that out in the warm-up session before tourney tomorrow.

I managed to pull the first tee time of 7:30a. I live 2 hours from the course. Getting up EARLY!

Birdied 14 a 670 (5200 elevation) par 5, then birdied 15, which is a drivable par 4 playing like 305 front edge. 16 is a tight but reachable par 5, tightest tee shot on the course. Left is dead… blocked it a little and knocked a 5 iron up near the green. Tough pitch to like 9 feet and missed. Pulled an 8 iron a tiny bit from 195 on 17, barely caught green and almost made from like 20 feet. 18 I blocked a 3w up onto a side of a fairway bunker. Chopped a 50 degree 8 inches behind my right foot over water to like 20 feet on the first cut and 2 putted. Good save from where I hit it. Tried to choke it off.

16-18 are all so gettable usually but happy to get it in.

congrats for surviving what reads like a pretty big butt-pucker.
if the last three are gettable in your mind, and you played them even, and still shot a course best, then you know in your mind you can go even lower...you just have to let it happen and not force it.
already looking forward to your next career low post on your home course

Ha, thanks.

The course is only 7450 yards at elevation, so it really only plays maybe 6700 yards at sea level, and it's pretty open. I bomb the ball, so it's just a course where I can make a million birdies/eagle. I'm always amazed when people can just go out and shoot a 60 in a tournament like a sociopath, wish I had that mentality.

I have to keep chipping away at things that make me nervous or skeptical, part of the process of golf. Honestly didn't even do anything super special today. Played the par 5s 4 under, birdied the one super easy drivable hole, and hit a couple wedges close. I made a bunch of 4-5 footers for par, but don't think I made a putt longer than maybe 12 feet.

Bunch of tournaments coming up the next few weeks, so hopefully some of it can transfer to actual rounds.

Well tournament today didn't go so well. So embarrassed that I will not even post the score. Course was absolutely soaked, played lift, clean and place in fairway cut.

Was 38 yards from the green in two on opening hole, a par 5. Then proceed to chip it 50 feet by, then 3-putt for bogey. The first green was SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the practice green, and I was the lucky first one to putt on the day. My guess is they rolled the greens but not the practice green.

Second hole bounce back. Make a 12 foot downhill slider to get back to even. Third hole was a double barky par. Hit tree 150 off of the tee and drops straight down. Pull second shot and hits the canopy 58 yards out. I actually hit a provisional here as the OB was super tight. Hit the next one to 15 feet and make par. Miss the green on 4 and then 3-putt when I get on, +2 thru 4.

Was +2 thru 6 and have a par 3. Really tried to get something extra out of it and I lifted my head up and skulled it into the water, leads to double. Bogey 8, miss a 15 footer for birdie in 9 and make the turn +5.

When we make the turn is when I started missing fairways. They are narrow to begin with and the rough was so high it was hard to find golf balls. I hit a 5 iron that got about 10 feet off the ground. also managed to shank a 5 iron trying to low hook one into a green.

Then the 13th happens. Playing 520y I cut the corner but somehow still have 265y to the green. Second shot goes left of green about 15 yards offline, and OB. Drive back and hit #4, literally same thing. Drop and hit #6, this time just short and left of green but in bounds. Very tin cup of me. 7th shot is in the worst lie of the day and I make perfect contact and sail it over the green. 8th I chunk a bit and wind up on fringe. 9th is a putt that hangs on the lip and I tap in for 10.

...and I'm toast. Pretty much gave up after that. Also took the WD for round 2. Save myself 200 miles round trip.
