Re: What\'d You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)

That's a great feeling. My college golf course gave me lots of eagle putt opportunities. The FSU course has 5 par 5s, and a driveable downhill par 4. I never made any of those eagle putts, more of them ended up as pars than birdies

42-45-87. No birdies, a number of double bogeys.

Started out promising but went off the rails midway. Too much waiting.

A couple friends and I headed inland for a social game at a course two of us had never played before. I actually played terribly for the most part and had probably the highest score off the stick that I've had in months, but I digress.

6th hole is a par 5, 449m (roughly 490ish yards). Slight left-to-right dogleg, but the tee shot is kinda open. Tree-lined fairway, OB down the right side just outside the tree line. Coming into the green, the hole narrows considerably, and the last 100m or so is kinda like a 15-20m wide runway of sorts, with trees and undulating rough to the left, and to the right there is a raised dam, which you can't see from back in the fairway. None of us had any idea the dam was there. I imagine it is full of golf balls given where it is.

I hit a pretty solid drive up the left hand side. My ball is on a pretty tight, hanging lie but sitting up ok. I have 228m (~250 yards) to a back pin location on a small, narrow green. My only shot is to hit a low draw 3w and run it up through the runway short. I recently got fitted for a TS2 and have been pretty comfortably shaping it and flighting it any which way, so despite playing terribly to that point, decided to give it a go.

Struck it pure, little baby draw straight at the flag. Hard to tell how far it carried but it ran up to about 3 feet short of the front edge. It was a hell of a shot from a hanging lie, not least when you consider the invisible dam I'd have been in had I not turned the ball over, or OB further right had I straight up carved it.

I get up to the green, pretty happy with the shot. I've recently started pitching more from spots like this with a 9ir, as opposed to trying to flight a 60 degree. I've realised that it's so hard to be as precise as you need to be with shots like this, and the percentage play is to pitch and get it rolling like a putt instead. With that in mind, I take out my 9ir and play for a landing position about 2-3 feet on the green, maybe 2 feet outside right of the cup and let the ball run out and fall back toward the pin.

Anyway, I clipped the ball perfectly, hit my landing spot and watched the ball track the entire way. It hit dead-centre of the flag at fairly gentle holing speed. The ball never looked like missing.

My buddies who know my lack-of-eagles has been a real monkey on the back for a couple of years now celebrated pretty hard. Well, one did. The other was still moping about losing a ball off the tee and still hadn't yet found his approach shot. Plus he knew our standing bet was any eagle in one of our skins game earned you a carton of beer from each player. Today was an expensive day for him.

So there's the story! I can finally tick that one off my golf goals.

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)

I was within 25 yards short of the green after 3 wood off the tee and a slightly miss hit approach from 250 on a 513 yard par 5 today. Tapped in for par.

Next hole same club. Hit slight draw that hit the top of the hill about 240 yards away and it ran down the other side of the hill. It went about 300 yards thanks to the hill. 2nd shot came out hot, took two hops on the green and bounced over the green from 50 yards. Made double bogey.

6 iron downhill par 3 from 180. Landed it 3 paces from the cup and it left about 15 feet for birdie. Tapped in for par.

Played all day with one ball.

Courses have been closed since Saturday afternoon. Tropical Storm (and now Hurricane) Sally had it rain from then until about noon yesterday. Then it rained overnight again. Hope for an open course Thursday now.

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)

Pretty good weekend, despite one score that wasn't my best:

Saturday, 40-38 = 78. Ties my best score in several years, but I didn't feel like I played lights out to get it or well above my usual play, I was just consistent. My recent swing changes haven't eliminated my miss (push), but they definitely kept it manageable and a more consistent fade rather than a hard push. I had three birdies on the round and a double, and bogeys on a couple of holes that SHOULD be easy pars if not birdies. Even when I've been putting up bigger numbers the birdies come; my putting has been exceptional. Sometimes you just have the confidence.

Sunday, 43-42 = 85. The monthly "breakfast club" round, started off 10. Playing in the thickest fog I've every played in, literally. For the first 12 holes you couldn't see more than 100 yards ahead of you, and range finders were all reading 5-6 yards ahead.
The backside at my course is usually where I have trouble, so I wasn't THAT upset about a 42 considering I couldn't see a damn thing. Front side (second nine) was disappointing, though, as I ended with four straight bogeys on holes where 3/4 are usually confidently pars, and a birdie or two isn't a surprise. Fog officially screwed me on the second hole, a short par 4 where my drive usually puts me in a wedge sweet spot for me. On the back nine each pin placement was exactly where they were the day before. I assumed the same on the front, so hit the same 82 yard wedge to the elevated green that got me the birdie the day before. I hit it perfect, thought I'd be right one it....I wasn't. They had moved the cup to the far back of an incredibly sloped green, so instead of a birdie putt within 5 feet I had a really difficult 30 footer.

All-in-all, I'm happy with my game. Only a few weeks ago my "bad" rounds were in the upper 80s or low 90s. Now the "bad" round is an 85.

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)

Oh, there was a discussion about slow players in another thread...Sunday round was horrible, and honestly impacted my rhythm. Playing with two walkers, one older guy who honestly wasn't a problem; the usual old guy who hits it 150 straight down the fairway every time. Second guy had the most tedious pre-shot routine I've ever seen, but it wasn't even a routine...he'd just take forever. He would also address a putt, no matter what length, then decide he needed to mark it and wash his ball, realign, whatever, but each time would comically dig around in his pockets FOREVER finding his ball mark. Sounded like he had a go-bag in his pockets.

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)

New 3wood was flying nicely today. Hit 6/8 fairways with good distance.

I really need an 8 iron.

Zero putts on par 5 second hole. Holed out from the rough for par.

2iron off the tee = 2 really good. 1 really bad , 1 ok miss right.

Short game needs work.

Private clubs FTW, where an over 4 hour round is non-existent. I mentioned this before but even our big charity scramble in the spring where you buy 3 mulligans each takes under 4 hours.

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)

in regards to place of play...i'm pretty sure i've mentioned this before, but there's a guy that occasionally plays with our group that uses BOTH a range finder and a gps watch and has to check the numbers from both them before every shot. he also uses an app on his phone to log the distance of all his shots, and paces off the distance for every putt on the green to track that as well.
on his best day he's playing off a 20.
i'd bet good money he's never looked at the data after a round.

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)

Since I don’t have an 8 iron, I either hit hard 9 irons up to 140, or soft 7 irons down to 140. It’s not a perfect science unfortunately. Also only my left eye works decently. Ole righty is useless. This means I don’t have depth perception. The result is that I love playing with people that give yardages unsolicited lol.

I think I need to start pacing off important putts. I usually play pretty quickly, but it seems necessary given the number of 3 and 4 putts on my cards.

Yesterday I was pretty good off the tee but short game sucked. Shot honest 94 par 70.

49 49 98 par 71. Haven’t played this course since 2006(?).

No birdies. 4 pars. 6 bogeys. Trying to forget the rest.

Good stuff:

Few fairways with good distance with 3 wood. 0/2 fairways with 2 iron (however one went through the dogleg right, flew perfectly straight and stopped less than a pace into the rough. Few greens in regulation. Several approaches came up just short.

I did lose 3 balls today, but the approach on 18 from about 200 finished pin high about 5 paces to the right. Hit a cut 3 iron and it ran up. Made the par.

I guess one of the reasons I fine putt pacing a bit silly is it's pretty useless, imo, at my club. Every green has a intense sloping, so pace on a 10ft putt from one angle is going to be completely different than a 10ft putt from any other spot on the green. I guess it's still a bit of extra information, but it's really so much about slope, I don't know how helpful it can be.

Any reason you don't use hybrids? I'm a firm believer in "whatever works for you," but the thought of having to hit even a 3 iron again gives me nightmares.

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)

It’s a long story. Starts with me playing golf with a 3 iron as my longest club when I was a beginner in 2000. Fast forward to me getting irons for Christmas in 2007(2 through P). Took a decade off between 2010 and 2019 because hip and back injury. Came back to golf this year. Played with 5 wood, 5 through P, and two wedges until September when I bought the 3 wood.

Next addition is going to be 58 wedge, maybe a temporary 8 iron, Then a driver. Then maybe I’ll consider getting 5 wood replacement, After all that, I would like to try some hybrid clubs. But it’s not a priority.

I'm a putt pacer too. It's part of my green reading, I feel the ground with my feet near the ball and in the vicinity of hole. Then between that and knowing the distance my brain can figure out how hard to hit it. It doesn't take long and its pretty much the extent of my green reading and I'm usually doing it while someone else is getting ready so I don't think it makes me slower than anyone else. But in some situations where I think it would slow things down (like if I'm first to go) or there are ball markers in the wrong spot but I just skip it.

the part i bolded above is exactly what should be done, but also exactly not what the guy does.
i'm not mocking the concept, either to track distance of putts attempted/made or to help with making the putt...it's just that this guy just seems to do it because he read about it, and doesn't start his routine until it's clearly his time to act.

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)

I decided to get back into golf this year. I have been playing a bunch since Memorial Day weekend and am actually improving this time, which is a weird feeling. This morning I played a par 3 course that is only 9 holes and shot a 36, which is my best ever. My iron shots went surprisingly straight and I used my sand wedge for all the short chips. I watched a Phil Mickelson video and he said to keep your hands in front of the ball, keep weight on your front foot and play the ball off your back foot for a low shot and off the front foot for a high shot. That has been really helpful.

I am playing a full 18 tomorrow at Blue Ridge Shadows in Front Royal, VA. It's said to be a really nice place. Looking forward to it and glad I got the bug again.

Re: What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)

Honest 96 with one ball. Par 70.

Hit 9/14 fairways, only a singular botched tee shot on 12 that went 25 yards.

Was within 30 yards of green on 513 yard par 5 third hole in 2 shots (both 3 wood).

Hit 4 greens but only 2 realistic birdie chances. 0/4 birdie putts.

4 pars. 4 bogeys. Rest is already forgotten.

Putting was better than usual but still kinda bad. A few 10 to 15 footers fell, gotta improve speed control.

I need to start backing off shots when my setup is bad (particularly when hitting draws, I tend to overcook with club face too closed at address).
