44. No birdies, 1 double bogey.

Just a bogey fest. Wind was up which made the holes into it unreachable for me and my wedges and putter didn't make up for it.

1 birdie, no doubles

Lost my match 4&3. Not because I played all that bad but because the 10.3 handicap shot 79. The 22 handicap made 2 bomb putts, one from the fringe, for par to halve holes which I was already counting as a win. The other 10 handicap contributed about 2 holes.

Recap:

1 - Par 5 and I'm in the back trap in 2. Splash out to 12 feet and miss the birdie - AS

2 - Catch a flyer from the left rough and have 50 feet for birdie. I run birdie putt 7 feet past an miss the comebacker, bogey. 1 down

3 - Stuff it in to 8 feet on my approach but miss the putts. Someone is closer and makes. 2 down

4 - Par 3 halved with pars.

5 - Long par 4 that i win with a par - 1 down (my only hole win of the day)

6 - 15 feet for birdie and i miss, someone from 10 feet makes. 2 down

7 - Halved with bogeys. I hit a toed 7 iron approach woefully short - 2 down

8 - 194y par 3 and I miss the green left. Chip to 10 feet and miss. Nobody else hits green. halved with bogey - 2 down

9 - Reachable par 5 and i flare tee shot right. Still have 275y and I hit a pull cut 3 wood that catches a tree. Have 94y left and I stick it to 2 feet and make birdie. Opponent snakes in a downhill putt from 20 feet to tie - 2 down

10 - A'most fees like a shank off the tee with a 4 iron but have 194y in. Fly the green with 5 iron but get up and down for par. Opponent 2-putts from 60 feet for par. - 2 down

11 - Push tee shot left but still have a shot from 177y. Toe down again and leave it short of bunker in front of green. Hit a great pitch to 2 feet to save par. Opponent makes a 50 footer from fringe to save par - 2 down.

12 - Fairway, green, par for me. Opponent makes a 20 footer to save par. - 2 down

13 - Hit my tee short left on the par 5. Blocked out by trees I try to hit a 30 yard cut with the 3 wood. Hit it good but doesnt climb high enough, hits a tree, and drops in water. End up making bogey and lose. - 3 down

14 - Short par 3 and I hit it to 20 feet. Just miss the putt and opponent makes a 5 footer for birdie - 4 down dormie.

15 - Slice tee shot in water. Drop and hit 6 iron to 15 feet but miss. Halved with bogey and I lose 4&3.

Playing that is super stressful on the game. Worse than a tournament to me. You have a lot of pressure on tee shots to not miss and immediately give the hole away.

Would have been my 2nd hole in one if not for the covid pins keeping the ball out of the hole. 8 iron From 140 landed 10 feet short of the pin going right at it, bounced off the hole and finished three feet short right. Made the birdie though.

time to employ the asterisk.
are these the raised cups that stick above the green? i've only played with either the inverted cup or foam ring that are both an inch or so below the surface. we had one guy fly a 100 yd shot directly in to the inverted cup and it bounced out. we let him score the eagle in our team game.

yesterday, posted in the wrong thread:

42-44-86. 1 birdie, 2 double bogeys. 70.8/134/6330 yards

Have moved on to the acceptance stage of grief for progressive distance loss. I'm going to have to become a lot more proficient with the 3 wood since I'll be hitting a lot of of them into par 4s and even par 5s. Otherwise, I would describe today as pretty average in all respects.

Today:

42-46-88. No birdies, 3 or 4 doubles, 70.2/125/6,000 yards

Finally pulled out the full set and cart bag. Made a few changes, subbing in a couple more hybrids. Honestly, I don't know how much of a difference it made. I'm not consistent with the hybrids.

Actually had a chance to go for a short par 5 in two after hitting my best drive in weeks. Of course I duck hooked one into the crap and made double. 2020 sucks.

I have not seen the raised cup. Just seems stupid to me use that option when you have 2 (or 3) better options out there.

yes the cup is raised above surface, keeping the ball from going home.

just walked 9 holes on 9 hole par 34 course. shot 46. i'm happy with holes 3-9, since i started 3 at +6.

highlights:

9 iron out of the rough from 120 left me a 10 foot par putt that i missed low.

chipped in for par on 5 from 30 feet slightly downhill. landed it right where i wanted to and it rolled as expected. even with the covid pin, it tapped the middle of the cup and bounced straight back just a few inches.

monster high draw off the 275 yard 8th tee with 5 iron over the tree in the middle of the fairway started on the intended line and curved around the hard dogleg left, finishing in the middle of the fairway. missed the green from 80 yards long left by 2 feet, but got up and down from about 40 feet with a decent chip and hit the 10 foot par putt.

finished on a high note by getting up and down for bogey over water from 60 yards. 54 wedge to 25 feet. i hit the straight uphill putt too fast but it was dead center of the cup. probably would have bounced out or gone over without pin. i'll take it.

4 birdies, 1 double

Emergency 9 after work. Started birdie, birdie, birdie. Even missed 2 birdie putts of about 8 and 10 feet too. Best shot was 260y out against the wind into 9 and busted a 3 wood on the front of the green.

Played a qualifier for the state match play today. Played like crap and shot 80 on a par 70 course. Needed 74 to qualify. Playing 3 days in a row before the tournament was probably a dumb idea.

They did foursomes and on the first tee we only had 3 show up. We tee off and as we're about to head down the fairway the 4th guy shows up. The official told him he has a 2 stroke penalty because he's late for the tee time, but not DQ'd because he wasn't more than 5 minutes late. He gets pissed and tries to argue he was there before it was his turn to hit, but that's not how the rule works. The official says she'll call the tournament director, and now he wants to wait for him to make it out, which would delay things more. She tell hims to go ahead and hit and he will come out. Guy proceeds to hit driver with the ball almost off his back foot in his stance, slices into the trees. Duffs one. Chops it all over the hole. While this is going on the tournament director comes out and confirms its 2 strokes. When we're on the green he decides to pick up and quit, and says to tell them that he had a stomach ailment, and takes off. We have to wait to tee off on 2 because he walks down the fairway back to the clubhouse instead of through the trees on the right. As we're about to tee off the next group gets to the 1st green and asks if one of us lost a wedge...... LOL. He'll probably figure out he left it next time he plays.

Oh my, at least you got a great story out of it

Luckily I have never run into one of those in a tournament before. I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

My course had been using raised cups that stick above the green, but they recently changed to having the cup an inch or so below the surface. Problem is, sometimes the ball actually rolls across the cup and out of the hole. It looks like a lipout but often hard to tell. Plus, almost everyone I've played with is still retrieving the ball with their hand, so may as well just use the regular cups imo.

46-39-85 +13

Followed up my first ever sub-80 round with a decent (for me) 85, but the front 9 was rough. Driver was back to spraying all over the place, lost a couple OB. Played much better on the back 9. It's tough for me to self-diagnose why my driver gets so out of whack. My irons have been pretty consistent.

Silver lining, got my first ever eagle! 10th hole, short Par 4 about 330 yds. Hit a 5-iron off the tee and then a perfect 6-iron that landed on the green and rolled right in. So that's 2 golf goals crossed off the list this summer!

Spoiler:

34-40-74

3 birdies, 2 doubles

Irons were ON early in the round. I hit 8 of 9 greens with 7 birdies putts inside of 15 feet. My lone missed green was on the fringe about 25 feet from the hole.

Freshly aerated greens man!

....and then the back 9...

Birdied 10 after hitting it to 20 feet. Bogey 11 from 160 out after flaring an iron left. That is officially the longest I have ever gone in a round before making a bogey or worse.

13 is a par 5 that I decide to play differently today. Hybrid, then 5 iron to 117y out. I hit my 125y club and take just a touch off of it, should be good. Nope it drops and buries in the lip of the bunker. Blast out and somehow there is no sand under the ball and hit it to the back fringe leaving me 50 feet. Not close on the first, miss the second, double.

15 I hit driver and have only 107 in. Hit my 110y club and thin it over the green and OB. Rehit to fringe, 2 putts and another double.

16 par 3 I hit it right over the hole to 6 feet. Miss it.

17 I hit it to 10 feet, miss it.

18 I hit it to 10 feet, miss it.

Whenever I try to hit it just a little softer than usual, i almost always **** it up. What I find that works better is taking short backswing and then making full downswing.

Also once in a while I’ll attempt the lee Trevino low flying wedge from 70 to 80. It’s great when it works but terrible when it comes off pure.

Very unofficial +17 for 9 holes. Best shot of the day was the first shot of the day driver straight down the middle. After that it didn’t go well. I played as single with a threesome. Guy played my ball out of the rough on 2. They were chatting as I was teeing off on 7. Then on 8 just as I was addressing the ball guy says something about 100 bucks if blah blah blah. I backed off and setup a second time. On 9 guy was talking to the beginner of the group about my setup and mechanics while I was setting up and I said something that made them stop talking. Needless to say that it went directly into the trees. Guy picks up my ball and says it’s yours. I say it’s yours now. He says no it’s yours and tossed it to me. I kicked it like a hackey sack and said I don’t want it Cus corona. He says I picked it up with my glove on. Very frustrating day, but man that first shot was sweet.

+4 for 8 holes, then the skies opened. No birdies or doubles.

Only one bad shot, a popped up driver. Rattled two flagsticks from 140 out, second one was a bit unlucky as it shot the ball off the green and I didn't get up and down. Not bad for weeknight golf.

Shot 38 in the 9 holes men's league at my course. It wasn't bad considering the wind was ripping like a freaking tropical storm. It's so weird how I can be lost with my swing one day and things are relatively easy the next even when I'm getting blown over.

Flatirons? What’s the course like? How was the weather? I hear it’s been crazy on the front range. It snowed like 6+” in aspen/Snowmass last night...

Yes it was Flatirons. The weather was good. I really like the course. In my opinion its way under-rated. Some people don't think much of it because its a muni. But they have some special deal on water rights so from what I understand they basically have unlimited water. Its an older course that's tight with big mature trees. Really thick rough and they had the greens rolling really fast. On #5 I lost a ball in the rough that should have been easily found and had to do the walk of shame back to the tee.... Its only 7000 yards but par 70 and you can't hit driver off a lot of holes so it plays longer than you would expect. I think its a great golf course. You can score if you get on a roll, but if you aren't playing great its not easy at all. Back in the day it was a playground for Hale Irwin.

Didn't realize they got snow in Aspen. It was rainy / windy in the Denver area today but its been warm.

Nice - I like those old tree lined courses for the occasional round. I'm going to play the CGA am qualifier at Bookcliff in Grand Junction next month as it's a great excuse to go down there and play a pretty good course.

The CGA mid-am is at River Valley Ranch up here this fall; you should definitely try to qualify for that as September in Carbondale is absolutely amazing (unless it snows).
