Playing in a best ball event this weekend, so no "official" score. Unofficially 77 which is my best of the season so far. It could have been more special had I not yipped two short putts and overcooked a tee ball OB, but I'll take it.

Brag: 81 (41-40) today. My best score in like 10 years.

Beat: Pitched in for eagle on par 5 (from about 60 yds) ... except had to take a penalty for bs lost tee shot (ball was in play and should have been easily findable but did not have much time to look)

Beat: par 70, rating 68.something, slope 114

Chipping from 30-70 yards really hurt me today. Drove the ball as good as I currently can. Putted better. Only one penalty shot. Typical slow start on 1 & 2 and a reasonably good finish from there. Decent chipping likely would've let me threaten 90, but considering I played in 105 degree weather after an all-nighter in Chicago and coming straight from the airport, it's hard to get too angry. I really did drive the ball good.

44-41 at Lido in Long Beach. 35 putts. Blech.

Had a 7 foot eagle putt lip out on 16. Sad, chances like that don't come up often.

If I can get some more consistency off the tee I could start shooting in the low 80s consistently.

Will keep an eye out for more snakes.
The Lakes course is very nice - apparently they hold US Open qualifying there. I wasn't sure which set of tees to try, as the next-to-tips were 6774 and the next shorter ones were 6050. The first was likely too long for me, but the second is shortish. I played the shorter ones as we were a foursome and the course was fairly crowded.

We ended up also playing the Resort course in the afternoon. Morning green fee at Lakes was 120 and the afternoon replay at Resort was 40. There are some new holes on the Resort course that are still in pretty bad shape, and I can't recommend this course right now. Definitely give the Lakes course a look if you're in the area, though.

Brag: None - shot 43-45 at the Lakes course

Beat: Speeding ticket going through Genoa en route

Beat: Pretty much lost it around the 13th hole during the second round, my wife killed me, shooting 90.

Variance: Nearly stacked at 2-3 300 max NL at Harvey's (set of 6s no good on Q64-K-2 board)

...and of course, it wouldn't be Sierra Nevada (the Resort course) without one of these guys (keeping warm as the sun was going down on the 17th):

Played with tuq today in Scottsdale and shot like a billion with ~8 water balls, ~8 complete pull chunks, and one birdie.

GOOD TIMES!

(tuq started off struggling like me but he turned it around nicely and was like -1 or E through his last ~13 holes...he str8 smashed off the tee on the second to last par 5 we played, very impressive shot) -we played like ~31 holes.

I don't know where the **** these chunk shots are coming from but it's rly pissing me off. Lucky for me I have the next few weeks to do nothing but golf and poker so I hope I can figure it out soon.

I think what's happening is that I've been trying to stay back more since I usually get so far to my left side so quickly on the downswing, which is leading to me hitting the ground sooner then I'm used to.

Whatever it is, IT BETTER STOP SOON **** **** **** **** ****.

move the ball back in your stance and aim a little left. fix it later when you get to the driving range.

RIP handle of Jack?

Finished up best ball tournament. Didn't win but fared respectably. Pulled a couple shots completely out of my *** to save the day. Cut driver 230 out of the rough to the green on a par 5? Check. Punch hook out of the trees, never more than 3 feet off the ground, 160 onto the green? Got it.

Then again with my shaky putting, if I'd been playing for score it would have been 84, 85 somewhere in there. Meh.

An awful 48-57=105 at Naga-Waukee in Wisconsin. Lost control of my driver for the first time since I started hitting it last season, and took a half dozen penalty strokes for lost balls. I'd like to blame the 9 a.m. tee time after a wedding the night before, but that doesn't explain why I played so poorly on the back. I finished with five straight sixes! Then again, two of my playing partners shot 46-56 and 51-60 (!), so maybe that did have something to do with it. The bride's father, a regular who invited us to play, also had a subpar round.

Highlight was a birdie on 9. Hit my drive about 240 (about as far as I ever hit it) straight down the middle, leaving about 160 to a back-left pin. Hit a seven to about 20 feet in the right-center of the green, which turned about to be the best angle to the hole. Drained the putt, which had 3-4 inches of right-to-left break.

Two things about this, from a mediocre golfer (fluctuating between 15-17):

1. Course management. I try to avoid these 30-60 yd shots at all costs. I'd rather lay up to 100 yds. I understand that we wind up with these shots largely when we don't plan for them, i.e., we duff a shot. But to the extent you are winding up in this range after a good shot, you should re-think whether this is what you want to do.

2. My short game really improved when I got a flop (64 degree) wedge. My suggestion -- subscribed to by only a few -- is to chip and pitch with high loft clubs. It ensures that you do not decelerate through the swing, which I believe is one of the main problems higher handicappers have with chipping and pitching. You can swing more confidently with the higher loft club because the ball won't go far after it lands. I have gotten used to, and like, the idea of hitting the ball closer to the pin and having it stop, rather than chipping with a 7 or 8 iron and having the ball run. I feel that I have much more control over the higher loft club. Yes I understand the risk of leaving a lot of chips and pitches short ... but I personally have more of a problem judging distances with lower loft clubs, and babying chips out of fear of going too far, than I do leaving chips and pitches short.

I know others will disagree with this, but it's worth a shot if your chipping and pitching stink.

Yesterday was a bit buggy, not poopy. And for getting out a 9am on a weekend, 5 hours is best case scenario.

Nice breeze though, I always liked the course.

Well, my game is slowly unraveling this year so I nearly didn't play. I plan to take a lot of time off in the near future. I'll spare everyone the boring, gory details.

So anyway, a consequence of this was that we played a no gambling, no scorecard keeping round so I didn't lose my mind. From memory (McCormick Ranch, ~7050 yard par 72) I was +14 the first sixteen holes we played and -1 the last fifteen holes.

I have mostly gotten away from carrying Jack Daniel's in my bag anymore, too hard on my liver. But I did take down about eight Coors banquet beers. In the course of about 4 1/2 hours that's underachieving by my standards. Bitcho didn't have a beer until after.

In the course of the round and after, I was unable to cure Bitcho of his Tiger-obsessed ways. I'm not sure what he shot other than he didn't quite come around as I did down the stretch.

How you ever ended up on a gamboling site, I'll never know.

After the first 9 you are supposed to start talking some trash or something like that to goad Butcho to not only betting you but giving you strokes. Duh....

Nice, and getting to play it twice no less. When I played it a few summers ago it was like $240 per, we had no connections.

Anyway, that day was easily the most schizo round ever, I shot 45-33-78 and eagled 18. Don't know how I kept it together after a quadruple bogey on the second hole...

Nah, I wasn't feeling good enough about my game to bet. Plus for all I know he could have been tarping me by playing poorly himself. Maybe it's a protracted tarp and he'll want to bet the next time we play...

Ha, I wish! Went out again today and although I didn't hit any chunks I still hit the ball like **** and had to birdie the last hole to shoot 85.

I'm so confused about my swing right now. I haven't worried about striking the ball in forever and now I find myself thinking in my backswing, "will i even strike this solid?"

I'd like to blame some of it on adjusting to the heat but that can't be it. Although I have to keep reminding myself that I only have about 10 rounds under my belt since a longish break after getting back from New Zealand.

If it doesn't get better fast I'll be searching for a lesson pretty quick

I've got a 60 degree wedge that I hit almost exactly 60 yards, and my 3/4 swing hits pretty regularly at 40, so the 30-70 yard stuff usually isn't an issue. But Sunday I shanked two basically 45 degrees off straight right and had distance control issues at the fringes (30ish yards and 70ish yards).

Played 3 times this year after taking almost all of last year off because I had screwed up my swing so bad I almost couldn't hit the ball. I had a good swing before (shooting low 90's) and figured if I took time to forget all the mistaken adjustments it might come back. And it is much better, though not great now.

2 weeks ago:

114 but was really happy that I was getting good distance on my tee shots and on other shots I struck well (i.e. there was hope) but touch on short game was way off.

Saturday:

104 on my home course in 2:45. Really happy with tee shots (still too much fade but I could work with it) and figured out a little adjustment with my long irons. And touch was better, though still not great. Was done at 9:45AM. I'm quick between shots, but take my time over the ball.

This morning:
105 on my home course in 2:20. I feel like I played like crap. lol. Short game really saved me for the most part. Long putts were solid; short putts were terrible. (42 putts!) Drives were 30-40 yards shorter than Sat. and longer irons felt the same way. (I think I wasn't really reaching back so I got no shoulder turn and sometimes no wristcock.)

If I were my father-in-law I would have shot 5 shots lower as he would have taken a "gimme" on the really short putts that I kept missing. And another 4 shots lower if I were my dad. He would have applied his "I can take a 1 stroke penalty and toss my ball out of the woods" rule on the hole where I bounced around in the trees for 5 shots. First attempt to chip out looked great (low, good chance of running up near the green) right up until the last tree; then I was in jail.
