The basis is the same as the pga tour strokes gained but those are based off pga players.
Strokes gained putting is easiest to explain. These aren't exact but just examples. Basically say you expect(scratch golfer) to 2 putt from 33 feet. So if you 2 putt you have zero strokes gained. Now say you have a 25 foot putt. You would expect to have 1.7 putts. If you 2 putt you would lose 0.3 strokes, if you make it you gain 0.7 strokes.
The rest is kind of like that. Say a 390 yard hole a scratch golfer should make a 4. Say I hit a great drive 300 yards in the fairway. Now I have 90 yards and would expect to make a 2.8 from there. I took 1 shot so that means 3.8 compared to 4 so I would gain 0.2 strokes in the off the tee category. Now say you hit it crappy, 240 yards to the rough. Now you have 150 from the rough and would expect to make 3.3 from there. So add the one you took and it is 4.3 so you would loose 0.3 on that tee ball.
It is sort of complicated but it very much tries to eliminate other variables. My numbers come from game golf so I don't do much to get them.
Hopefully that wasn't too complicated
Thanks for taking the time to explain - it’s still pretty confusing and I’m not digesting it all that clearly! I might have to do a little more research.
I’m curious since I follow a lot of professional golf as a fan, and I’d love to understand the stats a little better.
As for measuring my own strokes gained stats... that can wait.
