40 - 39 = 79

32 putts no 3 putts
8/14 FIR
8/18 GIR

1 birdie 1 double.

Couldn't make a putt to save my life. Hit the ball better than the stats show. Greens at Big Met were actually rolled so not half bad. My swing speed isn't really there right now sadly. It is the price of being lazy this winter.

So today I wake up feeling like garbage, and I had to drive from Indianapolis to Maryland. I considered not going, but I loaded up on Robotussin, cough drops, and cold-eeze and got on the road. After calling a couple of courses along the way, I found Crystal Springs Golf Club outside Zanesville, Ohio. Fantastic hidden gem course in the middle of farm fields with a lot of elevation changes, blind shots, and some water in play throughout. Was in great shape for being wet and for February.

Everything came together. Probably the best ball-striking round of my life. Shot 68 (-3) with 5 birdies and 2 bogies. It was insane. The wind was gusty all day 15-20 I'd guess, and while I always seem to play better in the wind for some reason, never like this. Here's a hole-by-hole

#1 301 Par 4 downhill, with stream in front of the green
I hit a 3hybrid fat off the tee, and it plugs in the right rough just off the fairway. However, I parked the cart 40-50 yards in front of where the ball was and did not have the right club with me and didn't feel like running back/forth. So, I just punched a wedge short of the stream, then pitched across about 20' above the hole on the green. Eased it down the hill just past the cup and tapped it in for bogey.

#2 322 Par 4 with a lake bisecting the fairway and green, which is slightly elevated from the fairway
Wind at my back and I hit a solid 4hybrid into the fairway about 130 out. Left the wedge short of the green - thought the wind would make up for the elevation change and it didn't. Pitched on to 3' and made the par putt.

#3 337 Par 4 dogleg left, downhill the last 100 or so.
Cross wind pushed my drive just off the fairway right, but left an easy 8-iron to the green about 20' short-right of the cup. Ran the putt past about 4' but made the comebacker for par.

#4 151 Par 3 severely uphill
2 club kind of hill even with wind helping. I take a 5-iron and hit it solid and it finishes just over the green. I putt from the rough and almost make it but it breaks off at the last minute and finishes next to the hole. Tap-in par.

#5 492 Par 5 slightly downhill the last 200 yards.
Solid drive just off the fairway as I didn't get as much help from the cross wind as expected. Crush a 3wood with the wind from 250 and it finishes just left of the green. Pitch on to about 3' and make the birdie. Back to even

#6 186 Par 3 slightly elevated green but it falls off hard to a stream between the tee and green
Rip a 3hybrid through the crosswind that never left the flag and landed about 2' to the right of it but released to the back of the green. Hit a putt that looked good most of the way but again fell off late. Tap in par.

#7 351 Par 4 Elevated tee, sunken fairway with water left then severely elevated green.
Hit a solid drive that plugs on the right side of the fairway. I was about 120 out and added 2 clubs for the hill/wind and ripped a 7-iron through the wind to about 4'. Make the birdie putt. -1 overall

#8 342 Par 4 Elevated tee with water on both sides. Elevated green is protected by trees if not in fairway
Crush a drive through the crosswind and have 60 left. Rip a gap wedge up the small hill to 5', make the birdie putt. -2 and I am laughing.

#9 376 Par 4 Water the entire way down the right side and cuts in front of the green, another elevated tee.
Kept my drive left which has slope that bounced and fed it down next to the fairway in the left rough about 110 from the hole. Punch a 9-iron into the wind gusting in my face to 2'. Tap in birdie. -3… my best 9 holes ever.

#10 368 Par 4 Downhill tee shot water right and uphill to the green
Hit my 3w just off the fairway on the right and rip an 8iron to pin hit about 15' left of the hole. Putt slides by on the high side about 3' and made the comebacker for par.

#11 502 Par 5 straight away
Wind is howling at my back and I hit a drive that catches the cart path a couple times before it bounces back into the fairway, leaving me 165 in. 6iron to pin high about 25 feet right of the flag. Eagle putt stops and sits on lip, and the wind never helped it fall in. Tap in birdie, -4 overall is the lowest I've ever been in a round. I refused to take the scarred ball from the path out of play.

#12 350 Par 4 slightly uphill dogleg right
Straight back into the wind I pull my drive just off the fairway into the left rough. Hit a 7 iron pin high but off the green to the right. Pitch just below the hole about 3' and make the uphill putt.

#13 349 Par 4 slightly uphill
Playing though a group I push my drive just off the fairway right, then hit my wedge fat trying to ease off on it with the wind at my back. Hit a poor pitch that left me 15' or so below the hole and push the putt right. Make the 2' comebacker for bogey. -3 overall. Booooooo

#14 184 Par 3 downhill
The hole is slightly downhill, maybe half a club but it's straight back into the now stronger wind. I flush crush a 4hybrid… 20 yards short of the green, that's how hard the wind is blowing. Hit a solid pitch to about 2 ' though, and make the putt for par. Ho hum.

#15 288 Par 4 bisected fairway and trees/huge gully protect the green left
I did not know the gully was there from the tee, but decided since the wind was again behind me to go for the green. I try to play a draw but wind up hitting it straight, so I'm actually just past pin high but about 20 yards above and to the right of the green in a grass bunker. Pitch down about 15' past the hole and hit another putt that looked good most of the way but did not finish turning. Tap in par.

#16 355 Par 4 Blind teeshot then slightly downhill to green with water right
Probably the worst drive I hit other than the fat one to lead off the day, I yank my 3w into the left rough but had a clear shot to the green. Smack a 4 iron into the wind that is now more in my face from this angle to the center of the green about 20' under the hole. Putt stays outside and just short of the hole, tap in par.

#17 388 Par 4 #1 handicap hole has an uphill blind teeshot, then uphill to the green with valley in between plateau on fairway
Crush a solid drive but into that wind again leaves me 175 out. Flush crush a 3 hybrid and wind up just short left of the green. I pitch up, but into the wind and a hard sloping back to front green my pitch just stops about 8' short of the hole. Dead center with the longest putt I made all day, which honestly I just jammed up hill into the wind.

#18 350 Par 4 all uphill
Crosswind doesn't push drive that much and I plug in the right side of the fairway. Wind does pull my 8iron approach pin high but 25 feet left onto the upper tier of the green. Hit a putt that looked great the whole way, but it lips out and settles behind the hole. Ugh, tap in par.

32 + 36 = 68 (-3)

congrats Dr.

I managed to shoot 40 with 18 putts, puke. Don't think I made a single putt over 4 feet. So far this year my home course has started rolling as well as cutting which is a good thing since the greens were slow. The only issue is having over 100 rounds on a course that the lines I am seeing aren't matching the speed. Should only take a few rounds and I prefer fast greens but is messing with my head a touch.

Very nice to always go under par. I never have for 18 holes. I really feel it coming soon though based on how I'm playing. I'm going to have a 24-putt day sometime, right?

39-37-76

4 birdies, 2 doubles (3 3-putts, one for double, others for bogey)

My total feet made on the birdies was 25, including making a 15 footer. Failed to get up and down for birdie on the last hole after having 7 iron into the green.

Getting close to putting it all together...

Just miss every green, much easier to have a 24 putt round.

In other news there is 4 ****ing inches of snow on the ground.

Annual Ryder Cup matches this weekend, red vs blue. The head pro and assistant pro had a draft for players. Head pro has only been there for a few months so he doesn't know the players yet. Assistant pro does and he loaded up with every sandbagger in the club. Of course I'm not on that team. Looking at teams I thought we would get absolutely destroyed. Down 14.5 to 11.5 after day 1.

Front 9 was modified alternate shot and back 9 was shamble. Our opponents got shots on 8 of 9 holes in modified alternate shot. We lost 8 holes. Won the modified alternate shot though with 3 straight gross birdies. Was the only way we won holes vs them.

Singles matches tomorrow.

Giving up 8 shots vs my opponent today. Singles match though so shouldn't be bad (unless he is a sandbagger obv).

A thoroughly meaningless +6 for six holes - six routine two putt bogeys. Nice to get out there and swing the clubs. Found a course that was partly open, worth every penny of the $8 I paid.

Also got to warm up with the Orange Whip. Felt pretty good, I think I'm going to like it.

Lost my match 1 down. Our team was destroyed 34.5 to 17.5.

I think I shot 82 with 2 birdies, 2 doubles and a triple.

Match was close the whole way, nobody was more than 1 up the entire match. Guess the handicap system worked.

Highlight and lowlight of the day came on the same hole. 467y par 5 (played the whites) and I had 122y left to the green after hitting 3 wood off the tee. May not compute but I hit the cart path and got some roll. I was blocked out by trees and had to hit hybrid under to just left of green. Proceed to chunk my chip into the bunker which plugged into the face. Then hit a great bunker to shot to 4 feet, then pushed the putt for a bogey.

So drive goes 355y, then needed to take 5 shots from 122y. lol golf.

34-42-76 Par 72 7450 yards. Trump National GC Jupiter

Was 14/14 fairways for probably the first time in my life, while hitting driver 12 times.

I'd be happy with that normally as a 0 index from the black tees on this course, but could have easily shot a 69. Made double on both par 5s on the back 9 with great drives on both. Had 232 to the easiest pin on the par 5 17th for a second shot and hit it a tiny bit off the toe with a helping crosswind 4 iron and it went in the water by 6 inches.

It was originally 7250 or so and trump added like 200 wherever he could when he bought it like 3 years ago. Front 9 is 3850.

It plays extremely long.

Haven’t done much special in the way of scoring, but have been pretty consistently playing to (or close to) my continually-dropping handicap.

Now at another new low of 13.9. Considering 24 months ago it was 33.1 I’m pretty happy, and I still feel like I’ve got plenty of room to keep coming down. I’m not yet at a point where I’m daunted at the prospect of having to play to my HC - I still feel like I can beat this one by a few shots at least!

Very nice

Played three rounds in Spain, two in Valencia and one in Alicante. Would have played another in Alicante but me and buddy left passports in Valencia and had to drive back to get em ffs. Third guy played a course and obv it was some superb track. One we played was great 20 years ago prolly, now condition poor but yea nice lay-out. Two were okay. Well at least got to swing clubs and some sun while at it. Scores in 90-95 range, pretty brutal all around.

72.5/147 6,600y

FSGA event at my club. They used the tips and took just a touch of distance off of that. Only 6 people in the < 50 age group and my net 77 was good for an lol win.

Had one tough hole in particular. I topped a 3w off the tee somehow, re-teed and then hit a low bullet into the bank of the water. Hitting 5 off the tee and ended up making a quadruple bogey 9. Everyone in my group took at least a 9 on their card.

Here was the fun one of the day. 14 hcp player, 178y par 3.

1 - water
3 - drop in front of tee box (150ish) and in water
5 - water
7 - water
9 - water
11 - water

Finally told him to just drop in front of the green.

13 - chip on
14 - putt
15 - putt
16 - hole out

Oh yeah, he also took and 11 on the par 5 18th. He shot 53-74-131. I know the course from the tips is tough but really?????

Nothing like a net 117, right?

No clue how I hit the ball as well as I did and my around the green was near perfection. Only front 9 was open so played it twice.

35 - 36 = 71
27 putts no 3 putts
11/14 FIR
10/18 GIR
2 birdies 1 eagle, 1 par, 1 double.

Strokes gained(since I preach how worthless normal stats are I figured I would start posting my strokes gained numbers)
+ is good

Tee: -0.23
Approach: -1.19
Short(inside 100): -0.78
putting: +2.11

https://www.gamegolf.com/player/ntan.../round/2042887

It was a bit odd how low I was hitting my driver so basically had zero distance but it went straight. I guess when almost every approach was a wedge from the fairway I am supposed to be under par. Minus 1 hole where I just forgot to play golf it was a really boring round. I think I only had 1 par putt longer than 5 feet. I basically just took 12 yards of my typical distance since it was like 38 degrees with a 1-2 club wind but seeing as it is the middle of March I played on principle.

I fully expect to shoot 90 next time out.

I had similar stats yesterday. Shot 36-35-71 on my par 72 74.6 rated course.

27 putts, 11/18 greens 8/14 fairways. Made 6 birdies, 3 bogeys and a double.

I am very confused playing from so many fairways and not trees. Played front 9 twice again since back still closed. Kept witting way on the heel of have my drives so distance was awful but they went straight. 30's and wet fairways don't help the driving distance ego at all. Made a 10 footer on last hole to save bogey.

38 - 36 = 74
32 putts no 3 putts
10/14 FIR

The greens are actually rolling pretty well for this time of year. Helps that no one else is dumb enough to golf when it is 35 degrees so no ball marks.
