Shot an 85 the other day at my home course. Not as good as it sounds - it’s currently got two fairways closed and temp par 3’s in place, so only a par 69.
Still, I’ll take it!

FSGA event. I had 3 lol triples. The swing was good....until it wasn't. I lasted 13 holes before I fell off the wagon. Worst hole was 18 where. I hit a driver that was massively pull-hooded. Re-tee for 3 and I damn near missed the ball. It went about 5 yards and off the right of the tee box. Saved triple somehow.

Highlight of the day was 486y par 5. Wind left to right and not helping. Hit what felt like my best driver of my life and had 177 to the green.

Swing was a disaster again today. Oddly enough it started getting better on 14.

42 on the front was done with zero pars. Had 2 birdies, 6 bogeys and a double. I hit it in the hazard or dribbled it off the tee on 3,4,5 and managed to bogey them all. Hit one OB on 7 and made bogey.

Apologies in advance to those currently snowed under, but I played 40 holes today. Two full rounds then a few more on dark. Plus another 18 yesterday.

First round today shot +1 to hc with SEVEN doubles. Zero triples, two birdies. Highlight was a 67m lob wedge stuck to 4 inches on the 6th hole for a kick in bird. Also stuck a SW from 79m into the wind to 2.5 feet for another bird on 11th.

Second round was a skins match vs a mate off the same HC (18) where I shot my best round EVER. I won 19-1 in skins

(Temp par 69) -

43-40-83

7 pars
9 bogeys
1 double
1 triple

Highlight of that round was a 150m 7ir into the wind on the par 3 3rd to 3 feet. Missed the birdie putt tho What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)

Lowest round ever. -4 to HC

I don't feel sorry for you northerners

I made the choice 17 years ago to move south for good. It did help that I can do my job from anywhere in the U.S. though.

Can´t wait for Tampa to choke in the play-offs!

Haha yea not a bad life choice. Would not complain if could golf year-round. Getting 20hours of possible golf-time during summer is pretty cool at least, late and early rounds are sweet. Small comfort now lol.

36-36-72 from the black tees (75.7/145 7537 yards) at Southern Highlands using rental clubs. First time playing the course, but I think 75.7 is suuuuper high as a rating. It set up for my game very well (long, open, dry/calm conditions). Rental clubs were a nice set of new Callaway Apex stuff, and I liked the putter... so not a huge hindrance.

Hadn't played in 6 weeks, but the last few rounds I played visiting my family in Florida, I was struggling to break 80 on a course rated 74.x (though it's so much harder).

Fun to hit it well after a break.

TR: Bonville Golf Resort, NSW, Australia. 10th ranked golf course in Australia.

This course is stunning. Situated just south of Coffs Harbour, NSW, which is about 4.5 hours south of Brisbane, and 7 hours north of Sydney. It's set back in the bush, which is predominantly 30-40m high native Gum Trees. I've linked the course map/flyerover video below, and I'd thoroughly recommend taking a virtual look through the course.

http://www.bonvillegolf.com.au/golf/our-course/

Cart-only, there's very few spots on the course that are in sight of another hole - each hole is seemingly a manicured oasis in the middle of the forest, surrounded by a wall of giant Gum Trees. Bad misses off the tee leave you virtually unplayable - if you can even find your ball. Plenty of well-positioned hazards (read: sadistic) throughout the course as well - your tee-shot strategy is really tested here and very few holes reward the long hitters. Most fairway bunkers are situated on a perfect length, as well as water and deep gully's guarding against aggressive lines on dog-legs.

All that treachery aside, the course is actually very playable provided you find the fairways - which are for the most part, fairly wide. The setup includes 5x par 3's and 5x par fives - most of which include traps that rule out hitting driver.

Traditionally, I don't score well when playing a new course for the first time - and I'd already mentally prepared myself for a blow-out, and more than a few lost golf balls based on the experiences described by various friends and playing partners at my home course who've played there.

EDIT: I almost forgot to mentioned - the Ladies European Tour has a stop here next week, so the property was absolutely crawling with hot, young Euro golf babes! I thought I'd died and been sent to some sort of Nirvana...

The Day:

2BBB + Individual Stableford, Blue tees (136 slope, par 72 (35f/37b))

Myself: 15.5, playing hc of 19
Nick: 17.0, playing hc 20
Lou: playing hc 9 (single visitor we linked up with)

Hole 1: 360m Par 4

A great test right off the bat - dog-leg left with a nasty hazard running right through the middle. I deliberated between a 4ir to safety on the left, or to take on the really tight cut up the right with my Driver. Ended up taking driver, and hit it on a great line. Carried the water and rested in the rough, leaving a good PW to the green, which I put in the back-right bunker.
2-putted for a bogey.

Hole 2: 346m Par 4

Another dog-leg, I miscalculated the distance here and thought my best strategy was to play an aggressive high cut with my 3w over the bunker. As it turns out, a 4ir or Hybrid to the safety left would've only left me a mid-iron in anyway, but I digress.
Struck it pure, but my line was a little too ambitious, leaving me with my first experience searching for a ball in the forest! Lucky for me, I found it and had some semblance of a "window" back towards the bunker. I punched my 6ir, got through my window (more like a porthole), but didn't run out far enough, and my 3rd shot left me with a big stick in front of my ball. Punched down on it, had a wedge up to the green where I 2-putted for a double.

Hole 3: 183m Par 3

Drama low and left, but with a friendly slope high of the right bunker, I took a rip with my 6ir and hit the perfect line. Little baby draw, I caught some horrid luck with a hard bounce above the bunker, firing by ball left and off the back of the green. Fortunately, the rough was thick enough to stop it finding the OB and I chipped back towards the front pin, lipped out for par and happily took the bogey.

Hole 4: 485m Par 5

See that saddle? Yeah, beyond that is totally blind, and I'd completely forgotten about the drop-off, so took Driver, when a hybrid would've been the play. Somewhat fortunately, I heeled it low and right, and found the formed garden (GUR) and took my drop next to the cart path. Little 7ir to the end of the saddle left me a downhill lie, running down towards the green - a little over 200m out. I got away with a bad 4ir, leaving a SW in for my up-and-down. A poor 3-putt later and I had to settle for my second double.

Hole 5: 147m Par 3

Tricky two-tiered green with pin at the back. I took a 7ir and aimed for a little draw off the right, which I blocked. Sitting up high in the right rough, I played a really crafty chip which ran down the slope past the hole to about 10 feet. Two-putt for a bogey.

Hole 6: 335m Par 4

First straight-forward hole - provided you can carry the gully. I smoked a drive down the right side, turned it over and ran out to 66m, right fairway. Really disappointed in my second shot, because my wedge play has been great lately and that's a perfect number for my LW. Front pin, I intended to throw it up high with spin, but skinnied it a little and ran well past the hole and onto the back fringe, putting back down the hill. Babied the first putt like a scared little sook, then two-putted for bogey from there. Bad result after a fantastic tee shot.

Hole 7: 470m Par 5

Need to avoid the fairway bunkers which sit about 250m from the tee. I hit my tee shot just next to them, so a great spot with just over 210m to the front of the green. This green is GNARLY. It's a heavily back-to-front downward slope over three tiers, and the pin was hard up the back. I took a crack at getting home in two with my 3W, and missed right. The green is a long way uphill from that right bunker, and I hit a wicked high flop up to about 7 feet, narrowly missing the birdie. Finally made a par!

Hole 8: 182m Par 3

Into a bit of a breeze, I wasn't confident with a 4ir so took my hybrid, with the intent to hit a bit of a soft fade back in at it. I almost NEVER hit this club off the tee, so was a little hesitant since pulling it left is disastrous. I hit it perfect. Straight at the pin. Unfortunately though it's pretty hard to make your ball stop from 180m hitting an 18 degree hybrid, so I rolled up the back fringe, with a long downhill putt to go. Again, left the first putt well short, so was left with two more putts to make bogey, which I would've taken in a heartbeat if it were offered to me back on the tee box!

Hole 9: 324m Par 4

Another well-designed uphill hole. I took driver with reasonable confidence of hitting a draw up over the middle bunker and finding some grass to hit off. Hit it slightly toey, but it helped it turn over and miss the bunkers, leaving me 108m uphill to a back pin. Was in two minds between my GW or PW, but took PW thinking the rough would slow my club-head speed down a bit. Nope, flushed it over the back, but made a fantastic little chip to 3 feet and saved par.

Front 9 -
44 hits (+9)
3/6 FW
1/9 GIR
17 putts

Hole 10: 456m Par 5

Another good risk-reward par 5, that fairway bunker is about 260m down the left, and I found it. My home course has almost no fairway bunkers, and the couple we do have I pretty much never hit, so I wasn't quite sure how I'd go laying up short of the water. The hazard isn't visible from where I was, so this time I drove up over the hill to take a look at what was ahead, and settled on a 9ir to lay up to wedge distance. Hit it great, then absolutely flushed my SW straight up the hill and over the front flagstick. No bite to the green, so I ran out to about 25 feet which really surprised me, and I was faced with a pretty scary downhill putt - hit it past the hole and you're probably running all the way down into the hazard. Not to worry, I hit a perfect line and my putt pulled up 6 inches short of dead centre for an easy par.

Hole 11: 169m Par 3

(Note the tee shot from the black marker - those four tall trees create a pretty narrow window, it's crazy!)

My first really bad duff of the day - I tried ripping my 4ir and fatted it badly. It ran just down to the base of the hill, sitting down deep in the rough. Played a pretty good GW up onto the green and safely 2-putted for a bogey.

Hole 12: 404m Par 4

Rated the toughest on the course - it's long, and I didn't realise that hazard was there on the right to trap the aggressive corner-cutters. I thought I could safely hit a high cut with my driver and be inside 150m, as the safe play leaves a pretty long approach. I hit a great shot, albeit slightly narrow around the corner, just clipping the edge of the tree-line and dropping down. My heart stopped as we drove down the hill and the water came into view, as I was sure I'd rolled in.
Fortunately, I'd not only stayed dry, but I'd stuck the fairway, too, and I only had 136m to the flag, which was into the wind and tucked back right behind the water.
I hit one of the best shots of the day, absolutely ripped my 8ir to about 10 feet, pin high left of the flag. Missed low side and safely tapped in for a par on the only hole I get two shots

Hole 13: 370m Par 4

A long way uphill from those two bunkers, I decided to be smart and hit a hybrid, which I creamed dead-straight, between the two bunkers, leaving 160m to the front flag, all the way uphill.
Took a 6ir, which I didn't expect to get there, but seeing the slope on the green I decided short was better. Lo and behold, I got most of the way there, with my ball sitting down deep in the rough about 30 feet short of the flag. Hit a beauty of a flop shot which stopped dead 2 feet from the hole for an easy par.

Hole 14: 505m Par 5

Mostly straight-forward, just long with a bit of nasty on the left. I hit a pretty good drive, albeit a little toey, but ran down the left side of the fairway, leaving 232m to the flag.
My plan was to lay up, so I took out my hybrid with the plan to hit a high fade to pitching distance.
Plan failed - I smoked it dead straight down the left side, and I was pin-high, down below the left bunker in the rough. Pin high from 232m with my HYBRID. I can only imagine I must've kicked forward with my first bounce.
Another beauty of a flop-shot, leaving 8 feet for birdie, which lipped out. Happy to make my 3rd par in a row, though!

Hole 15: 357m Par 4

Another great dog-leg with plenty of punishment for missing. I hit a really good 3w off the tee, which at first I thought found the fairway bunker on the left. I got down there and I was well past the bunker, 117m from the pin, left side of the fairway.
Hit a pretty average PW into the flag, which was tucked hard up the back right, on the top tier of the green. Pulled my shot to the front left edge, but hit a perfect low spinning pitch into the tier, which stopped dead 3 feet from the hole for my 4th consecutive par!

Hole 16: 372m Par 4

Full of confidence, I teed up on the left side and did my best to emulate DJ's power fade, and somehow pulled it off! Leaked a little right and got some help from the cart path, but when all was said and done I was right-side of the fairway, 69m from the front pin for an almost-300m drive.
Flag was hard at the front, with not much green to play with, and I left my LW just short. Thinned my chip past the hole and two-putted for a disappointing bogey. The par-streak dies.

Hole 17: 142m Par 3

Pin was a little forward here, so I really only had about 110m to carry the water, and 117m to the flag. Slightly bladey PW missed and I was in the back-right bunker facing a downhill sloping green, with water well and truly back in play.
Hit it pretty nice, but there was just no stopping it close to the hole without hitting the flag (which I only just missed actually), and just missed the par putt coming back.

Hole 18: 460m Par 5

That dog-leg is a long way uphill, and beyond that is blind, as it bends back down the hill, all the way to the water. A good long draw will leave a decent chance to get home in two. The green is a deep, back-to-front sloping beast with a bazillion undulations.
As per the plan, I hit a great tee shot up over the hill, and found fairway. I had 176m to carry the front of the green, and 204m to the flag all the way up the back (yeah, it's deep).
Hit a soft hybrid, but just caught the front fringe taking some heat off it, and rolling onto the surface, leaving me with a LONG uphill eagle-putt.
Best part about this hole was that I was already 6 shots under my handicap, and I'm now putting for eagle on the last with a decent sized gallery up in the beer garden outside the bar!
Ended up making a very satisfying two-putt to finish with a birdie!

Back 9 -

39 hits (+2)
6/7 FW
4/9 GIR
16 putts

Total Round Numbers -

83 hits (+11)
9/13 FW
5/18 GIR
33 putts

44 Stableford points, -8 to Handicap.

New best round ever. Both relative to handicap, and number of hits for a par 72 course.

3 birdies, 2 doubles

Started out birdie, birdie but were were playing an "emoji ball" game where you rotate the ball around until it was lost. Ball was a rock and had zero spin. I had it on the 3rd hole, hit my lay-up shot on the par 5 in the bunker. Had 126 all carry and dumped it in the water.

They somehow calculated handicap indexes in it. Winning score was something like 48.5 net. So guessing you get 10% of team index (that's a complete guess). 4 18 handicaps would get 7 shots. That means they have to shoot -17, as bogey golfers. Uh huh.

Didn't play to win anything though. It's our annual breast cancer charity event.

36-44-80 - First (and last) round match play.

I started out:
Par
Par
Par
Birdie
Par
Par
Par
Birdie

...and I was only 1 up. Opponent also gets 9 shots so we played straight up.

After my double on the 9th (flubbed a chip shot) we were all square. If I could have just made par on the 9th I would have had a career low 34 for 9 holes. Choke much?

After making par on 10 and 11 I was 1 up then I went:

Bogey (all square)
Bogey (1 down)
Bogey (2 down)
Bogey (3 down)
Bogey (lost 3&2)

Finished it off with a 3-putt bogey on 17 and I think I hit 3 different trees on the last hole and made double.

Bad finish but still feel good about my game. Opponent ended up shooting 75 with a double on the last hole.

1 birdie, 3 doubles

Did something on the 3rd hole I have never done before. Was a solid 10+ mph wind straight down 543y par 5 with water fronting the green.

Hit 3w off the tee and it was the best one of my life. Dead straight, a touch low and absolutely bombed, with good roll out. Marked it off in the 290-300y range.

Pinged the wall of the hazard at 226y and the pin at 243y. Aimed right to stay away from the water short, left and over. Hit 3w just above the trap on the right and ended up just right of the green.

Chip shot was tracking and just turned right at the hole. Made the 5 footer coming back for birdie.

Didn't think I was ever gonna get close to that green in 2. Only gone for it in scrambles before.
