ARGHHHHHHH!
Thought I had the sub-80 round in the bag.
Got really unlucky.
On the 17th, it's a short par 3 across water with a steep bunker guarding the front. Seemed like a 2-club wind behind us, so I used a gap-wedge, knowing it'd have to fly about 115 to clear the bunker. Well, just as I hit it, the wind died...but I hit it pure and it plugged right under the front lip of the bunker. literally UNDER the lip. All I could do was swing at it and dislodge the ball so it rolled back into the middle of the bunker. Hit a wonderful sand shot from there to wthin 3 feet to save bogey, though.
Okay, just gotta par the 18th...it's one of my favorite holes - tough driving hole, as you have to choose which side of a creek that runs on a diagonal from the bottom left to the top right of the fairway.
Well, I pop the damn drive way up high, but get lucky...still have 200 yards to the green. Miss-hit a 6-iron, pitch to 15 feet, and just miss the damn putt.
Really, only the one bad drive of the day. Guess the pressure got to me.
On the double on the par 5 - I hit my drive well, just a little bit too far left - and it went into a bunker - I tried using a 6-iron to give myself a decent 3rd shot into the green, but I didn't get enough loft and hit the lip and rebounded back into the bunker.
2 birdies, 2 doubles. And they all came within a 4-hole stretch on the back nine! Birdie-double-double-birdie. How weird.
Played well, though. Only 30 putts. Striking the ball better than ever.
The birdies were nice. First one I hit a great drive but right into a bunker that, for some reason, is in the middle of the damn fairway. Had a stiff wind in my face and 135 yds. to the pin - just used an 8-iron and made sure I hit the ball first - stuck it to within a foot for a tap-in.
Second birdie was an great drive, a pure PW to within ten feet, and sunk the putt.
I've got to start scoring better on par 5s.
What's really helped is something so simple. Instead of looking at the ball when i'm about to swing, I look about a half-inch in front of the ball - at a blade of grass or something - and that helps me hit the ball first and take a decent divot IN FRONT OF THE BALL. It's pretty much eliminated fat shots or chunks.
