i'm curious about the 7 missed GIRs on the non-3pars if you were barely missing fairways. was there a common theme?

2 - Had about 70y and totally missed taking distance off my 58* and left it short.

5 -I actually hit 3h off the tee, leaving me 178, had to get it over trees and pushed into bunker. The landing from the tee area is tight with trees and a lateral hazard left and a fairway bunker followed by OB right.

7 - I didn't cut the dogleg and had 188y to the green. Bare lie and I left it about 10 yards short of green on my approach

9 - I had 40y left to the green after my 2nd shot on the par 5, didn't chunk it but left it a couple yards short on my pitch.

12 - thick rough right and I didn't pick it clean leaving me short

13 - 100y to the par 5 and I hit a thinned 58* that went 140 yards

15 - Cut off too much of the dogleg and left it behind a tree, albeit only 5 yards off the fairway, pitched out to just in front of green.

So basically distance control with wedges and making solid contact with my longer irons.

thanks....always interesting to see how other folks struggle during particular rounds.

Shot 37-44 for 81 (+11) on my home course with a father-son duo of good dudes. I made some great pars on the front and some bad doubles on the back.

6 Fairways (some drivers, some 3-woods)
7 Greens (mostly short irons & wedges)
28 putts (mostly for par or worse)
1 Ball (again didn't lose a ball)
3 Hosels

Heh played a 2-man scramble competition, funny card of 44-31 - 75. Slope 4 so net was even and we were 18/56. Started on the 6th, played some bad holes, then 10 holes -4 but last 5 were brutal. It rained all day, and a lot, a 5h 10min round too. Haven´t been that wet in a couple of years. Gotta say the last 5 holes had trouble keeping hold of the club, well at least same for everybody. Woulda been fun on good weather I think, now pretty miserable.

Not a good round. 4 doubles, missed a tap-in for one of them, and was all over the course. +3 on the par 5s. In the water twice. Made some really bone-head decisions. Hit some of my best drives ever, but then would follow them up with bad swings. Bleh. Two rounds over 85 this week...not good.

You don't want to know what I shot today. I was horrible. Just couldn't hit anything well. Worst round in a while.

53 - 51 104
6 penalties
7 triples

Horrendous

Played fairly good today. Middle of the round not so good though. Started with a double on par 3 8th playing 197 against a 15 mph wind. One handed follow-through and ball drops in the water.

The ending stretch was good though.

Driver was a 2-way miss today, either a pull or cut it too much. I did manage a toe hook on one hole as well.

Apparently this was a popular number today...

40-41-81. No birdies, 1 double bogey. 8/13 fairways, 7/18 greens, 32 putts

Course was soft and the greens slow and bumpy after ~ 3 inches of rain yesterday. Ball striking started out pretty good and tailed off some. Left a lot of putts short headed right for the heart.

74 today. Lipped out a 10 footer on 18 to tie my best round ever, but I can settle with 74. Not bad considering my game has been all over the place lately.

Had another ugly 89 round, at least 4 doubles or worse. Awful with the wedges. Firm greens turned some great iron shots into bad ones, tilted me and cost me strokes on those holes. Was lazy with the putter after the bad front 9 but played the back 9 in under an hour with a playing partner.

Not gonna play rounds for a bit, gonna get my wedge/putter/mental game back to where it's not my weakest part.

42-43=85

3 penalties for drives right down the middle of the fairway and we could not find the ball? WTF.... Had a 3' putt on a ridge with huge break (at least 3') that I missed. I tried the putt again after the hole was finished and I finally made it on the 7th attempt. I'm not sure what to think of pin placements like that. My game felt good enough to break 80 but I didn't.

Interesting ruling.. Playing partner that consistently hits that ball 320+ yards of the tee. Slices a drive onto another green. He is a 5 iron from the green he needs to get too. Letting him hit it will leave a fat divot on a green. What do you do?

He gets relief without penalty. Rule 25-3a.

It's a 2 stroke penalty if he plays it from the wrong green.

I didn't play today but I decided to go for a lesson with the pro who teaches my son (this was my first lesson ever). He noticed a couple of small things that had crept into my swing and had me fixed in no time. I was encouraged that he said I had a great swing and was shocked that my lowest score is a 90. I feel like all of the work I did on my swing this year has really paid off and with some of the knowledge he gave me on my poor shots I feel like I should be able to make adjustments as needed. I was basically doing one of two things wrong.... First was being too fast with my right arm and ending up with a chunk. The second was getting my left shoulder out in front of my swing which was causing my hard left yanks.

I can't wait to play on Thursday now.

Here are a few details from the ruling above.

It was tough to figure out what to do. We knew he shouldn't hit from the green. He had a clean look at the flag from where his ball sat on the green. From where his ball entered the green his next shot was blocked by thick trees. If he went to the back of the green, he had a terrible lie on a steep backstop hill that was 30 feet further back from his ball. Either of these options left him with a short punch shot. The only place he still had a fair look at the green and a playable lie was closer to the hole.

After considering letting him tee it up on the green. We let him play from the front of the green which putt his ball about 15feet closer to the hole but felt like the closest thing we could do to replicate to the spot/shot/lie that his ball was in . It was just 4 guys out playing and not a tournament. We were pretty sure our ruling was not correct but it felt OK for our purposes.

Looking back I think forcing the punch shot from where his ball entered the green might have been better.

I haven't dug into it but is the penalty for playing from the wrong green new? In high school (20 years ago) our home course had two greens joined by a narrow strip of green. If you were on the wrong green you had the option of putting from there or taking the free relief in the rule. Reading the rule now, it would seem that even putting from the wrong green would incur a penalty.

The rule is you HAVE to take relief if you ball is laying on the wrong green. So playing from there, an improper spot, is a 2 stroke penalty.

Something started to click today....using my left side/arm instead of pushing my right side over and through. I actually felt like I was hitting the shots I was meaning to.

41-40-81

At Bali Hai...great driving and irons...putting wasn't bad, but I did 3-putt three greens. 37 total putts. Only three missed fairways.

that's the same green under the rules, and unless there's a local rule you have to play it as it lies

the rule is really simple. you drop it within one club length of the nearest playable spot, no closer to the hole. there's no need to worry about whether it leaves you in better or worse position than you would have been on the green, because you're not allowed to play from the green. sometimes it means you have an easier shot, sometimes it means you have no shot at all. that's golf.

I play at a course where one of the greens is in the shape of a 7. If the pin is at the upper left portion of the green, and your ball lands on the bottom portion you have 2 options. 1). Chip from the green, or 2) 3 putt.

It's a really dumb design, and I think they are begging to have the green tore up. Doesn't make a lot of sense to have that type of layout on a public course.

Played pretty bad tbh but I somehow was able to score well. Driver was all over the play although only 1-2 were "really bad". Wedge approaches to greens were just downright terrible. I had 10 approach shots on par 4's and 5's with a 50*, 54* or 58* wedge and managed to hit only hit 5 of those greens. Some of it had to do with how thick the rough was but still.

No bogeys due to miracles. #4 I had to make a 25 footer to save bogey. #16 I put tee shot in the water, re-teed and hit it to 2.5 feet.

It's great going out first in the morning but I always run into maintenance:

- Fairway mower on 4
- Fringe mower on 5
- Guy cutting the holes on 8
- Guy cutting the green on 9 and 10
- Guy raking the traps on 10 and 11

The really bad thing is the guy cutting the greens pulls the pin and leaves the stick on the green until the guy cutting the holes comes by. I just aim for middle of the green. Greens are small enough to where you never have that long of a putt.
