55-55-110 today.

3 pars
5 bogeys
4 doubles

4 9s!
1 8
1 7

8 penalty strokes
2 sand bunkers
33 total putts
2/14 FIR (lol)
1/18 GIR (lol)

Drove the ball horribly obv. This course is loaded with trees, every drive was either a low pulled liner (into trees) or a high slice (into trees). On two holes it took me 3 tee shots just to have a playable ball. That's 8 strokes wasted right there. Pathetic! Started hitting 4W off tees but still not too much improvement.

Putted well for me, except for a few holes. 4 3-putts but 7 1-putts. Drained a 12 footer and narrowly missed draining a 10 footer from the fringe that stopped 2 revolutions short, and missed a 14' putt about 1/4 ball width under the hole and a 16' birdie putt on a par 3 about 1/4 ball width above the hole. Last couple times out my feel has been much better as I've changed my putting stroke.

Short game was good, both sand bunker shots were good (1 greenside, and 1 FW that I picked clean). All fairway irons were terrible. I think I figured out what I've been doing wrong though - just not getting my front turned in time and been staying back on the ball hitting it thin or pushing it. I started slowing my swing way down though and really focusing on turning my front hip and hitting down on it and the results got instantly better.

I still have no idea what ever went wrong with my driver. My longest drive today was probably 230. Last summer I was hitting them 255, 270, even logged four 300+. And straight as an arrow. Didn't change a damn thing and all of a sudden I can't buy a clue out there. No power, no accuracy. Mindboggling stuff. I'm miles away from reaching 90 or 91 this summer. I mean not even close.

If you have the golf channel, go to DVR and look up the golf channel and see the segment on Greg norman Driving, he has really good pointers and promise you will hit it pretty damn good after watching this.

I've seen that. It was good, but it's easy to look at a swing and be like "yeah that all makes sense" and then execute it yourself*. I think I need to lose some weight, too. I don't think having such a soft midsection can be good for swing balance. I'm working on that Tuesdays and Fridays now.

*Though I did not actively incorporate his theory of when, in the backswing, the shaft is parallel to the ground, that it should be pointing 180 degrees opposite your target.

I did drop my driver on a sidewalk last year and it sure as hell seems like my poor driving started shortly after that time. Any possibility my driver head is ****ed up? I don't think it is but I guess it's possible.

BTW when I said earlier "straight as an arrow" that was just the ball path. My drives still could have been pushed or pulled but straight ball path and launched pretty good for a high HCer. I'd kill to hit it like that anymore.

54-51 = 105

2 bunkers
6/14 FIR
(this one's awful) 0/18 GIR
34 putts

I drove the ball a lot better than usual today, actually hitting or being left of the fairway half of the time. My short game (chipping, pitching, <100 yds) was pretty good today as well. My putting was terrible, and I could not convert on (for me at least) any of the fairways that I hit. I also hit way too many balls thick, and that was taking off ~30-50 yards per every thick hit ball. At least I kept every hole scoring range between bogey and triple. Something to be said for consistency.

Shot 96 yesterday...not bad. Putted well and drove well but everything in between was lolbad..even for me. I feel like i'm pretty close to making big scoring improvements though. Had a eureka moment with the driver while hitting like 12/15 fairways...with no bad misses. And my putting was the best it's ever been.

I had 4-5 pars and a birdie but also some disaster holes where i shanked one from the middle of the fairway or whatever and couldn't get the damn ball on the green lol...some fluky stuff tbh.

If i can keep driving and putting like that i should be breaking 90 for the first time very soon. Hopefully i can get my hcp to like 15 by the summer. from 30+ a few months ago. Just need to put in the time at the range. I still haven't worked on bunker shots and barely on chipping.

Only took 31 years to do it, but I'm pretty stoked right now! I just wish I had my 31 year-old self as a swing coach in high school...woulda sped things up quite a bit!

86 on a tough track. should have been at least a few strokes better.

my game now seems to be combo of great shots and very mediocre or worse. nothing in-between.

along same lines, i seem to be really starting to tame my trouble holes (long par 4's) but i seem to have problems on the easier/easiest holes.

alot of good changes to my game though:

back to hitting from inside. really helping with driver. maybe i just need to calibrate shorter irons. find the proper contact point.

using chipping motion from further away. not transitioning to pitching motion too close to hole.

using less lofted clubs around the green when possible. skull and good shot go similar distances. much less chance of fat shot. i play very wet courses i might add.

play alot less break on putts under 20 feet and hit them harder. reading stuff about tiger woods and others on tour they seem to jam alot of putts and don't play much break. i think it's the way to go. i'm good on judging breaks but can't get my weight. anyway, going to take out the break on many putts. longer putts still need lots of break.\

things to work on: calibrate shorter irons, implement 3-iron stinger (not sure if i'm long enough to use it off 380-400 yard par 4 for instance), use knock-down driver more (take 25 yards off, but much, much more accurate)

50-48-98 (par 71)

5/14 fairways
3 GIR, 7 GIR+1
1 birdie, 4 pars, 4 bogeys, everything else worse
32 putts

47 (par 35)

4/7 fairways
0 GIR, 7 GIR+1
7 bogies, 1 double, 1 triple
18 putts (two-putted every hole)

I think that's my first time breaking 100 on a par-71 or higher. (Broken 100 numerous times on par-70s and shorter courses.) Still inconsistent with the driver, but I was mostly trying to throttle back a little and keep it in the fairway. Started off decently on that front, but started to spray it around a bit too much later on. Nevertheless, most of the misses with the driver were still in decent, playable spots. Not many punchouts. Iron play started off somewhat poor--a couple of tops and grounders, but it got better as the day went on. Had a handful of nice pitch shots. Putting wasn't great--I think I was about 2/9 from 5-7 feet.

Highlights--chipped in for par on the first hole. Hole #5: easy driver down the middle, about 145ish out. Pin at the back, bunker in front, no trouble behind the green, wind helping. Decided to hit 7 instead of 8 to make sure I avoided the bunker. Caught it fat and thought it was headed for the bunker, but it either skipped over the corner or (more likely) carried it by about 2 yards and rolled to the back of the green to give me a 2-foot birdie putt, which I sank. I was pleased with it because I chose the club that would take the trouble out of play, even on a fairly poorly hit shot. It was luck that it worked out as well as it did, but had I hit it well it probably would've hit the green and bounced long, leaving me with an easier up-and-down than one from the bunker. Hit a pitch shot to 2 feet on #9 for a tap-in par. Came to #16 needing to go 2-over in the last three holes to break 100. Parred #16, sank a 7-footer to bogey #17 (a par-5), then knocked my 8-iron approach from the rough to 13 feet on #18.

currently have an 11.6 handicap, hadn't been in the triple digits since last spring. played the first round of the year today and shot 107 on a easy course. irons were the worst i've seen in a while, when i did happen to actually get the ball in the air/not shank it the ball flight was too high and had some pretty good slice action. my misses have been hooks, i didn't come remotely close to drawing or hooking a ball today and my distances for each club were like 20-30 yards less then they've been in the past. something is seriously ****ed up with my swing

crazy round today:

front 9: bogey, bogey, bogey, par, bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey. putting felt really good, chipping = very good, driving it decent, irons = horrible.

back9: par, bogey, bogey, birdie, birdie, birdie, par, bogey, par. Realized I was too steep, flattened out my backswing just a little bit and basically pured it for 9 straight holes. Missed one 5 wood badly which led to a penalty shot and didn't finish a couple of 3 iron swings, but yeah, 3 straight birdies on 2/3 hardest holes on the course and the third birdie on one of the toughest pin placements on the course.

45+52=97 for 33 Stablford 20+13

4 Pars, 7 Bogeys, 2 Doubles, 5 Worse

3/12 FIR, 2 GIR, 35 Putts

I started off well but after smothering a drive into the ground on the ninth things started to fall apart. I had to poke the ball out onto the fairway but went too far and into a fairway bunker, from there into some trees that I had to bunt out of.
I steadied the ship with a par on the tenth before missing the green and hitting a chip short into a bunker on the eleventh. I got away with two horrible shots on the twelfth recording a bogey. On the thirteenth I hit a pulled tee shot into the trees and had to bunt out compounding that error by missing the green with a pitch. I missed a one foot par put on the fourteenth. On the seventeenth and eighteenth I went three off the tee by pulling the ball hard left and recorded two eights to finish.

9/14 FIR
7/18 GIR
2/10 up/down <-----brutal
36 putts <------brutal

ball striking was pretty decent but still got that winter chipping and putting rust. Missed like 4 five footers. Hit a nice 4 iron with a big draw 210 into a par 5 for an eagle putt I missed. Overall solid early season day.

No score. Got in 9 this weekend but played like complete ass. The other guys I paired up with were playing a game so I tried to stay out of the way. I did hit a couple decent pitches for the first time all season and have some hope that I might be on my way to figure things out.

Just found old scores from last summer. Since i'm a beginner, I know pretty much nothing about handicap.

What would be a reasonable range for my handicap with these scores?
(93, 96, 100...ratings 69.4, slope 123) (106, 89, 90 , 84, 97... ratings 70.8, slope 118) (98...ratings 69.4 slope 123)

I just want to know where I'm starting around for this year.

Technically, you need at least 20 rounds to have an official handicap, but most sites will let you compute an unofficial one in as little as 1-5 rounds. Anyway, that first site sucked (sorry), try this one: http://golf.about.com/od/handicaps/l...dicapincal.htm. You only need 5 scores for it to compute your handicap. Like I said, you might want to create a profile on a site like oobgolf.com, where you can enter all sorts of information like hole-by-hole stats (club used, fairway hit, etc) and weather. They have a lot of courses already entered, so you just need to fill in the data. Good way to help spot areas that need improvement.
