Also continued my 0-for-2011 steak of winning nothing in the raffles. They had 60-70 prizes today, got nada. Can't really complain though.

Played really well today. I burned edges on 6 putts and made none of them. Only putt I made was a 1 footer for par on the easiest hole on the course after I messed it up pretty badly. I see good scores in my future if I keep playing like I am now.

fwiw when someone says the back at torrey, I assume they mean the blues, they don't even put out the black tee box markers.

It's my home course too and weirdly I shoot very well on the south course. I play the whites though (11 hdcp at the moment), and the blues on the north course.

Yesterday, I shot an 80 (+10) at Grassy Hill CC (70/119) in Orange, CT. I struggled with my woods and putter. Irons and wedges were fairly solid.

Damn I just realized my 89 from a couple weeks ago was a 90. So I still haven't broken it yet. Was looking at OOB and noticed on a par 3 it said I hit GIR and I remembered plugging it in the greenside bunker. OOB showed a sand shot there and 3 putts for a 4, so it had to be a 5. Even on the card I mark down clubs used and it said 9I, SW, P, P, P.

**** ah well I'll have to officially bust that bitch next time out.

First 4 holes all par, then 3 put a GIR, then par, then bogie. Then blowup, best ive ever played, I went for 94 total, so getting a little down i HCP from it :-)

39-41-80. Best round of the season. Only 1 birdie - putted in from the rough off the green on a par 3 - and 2 double bogeys. Excellent day with the driver, hit almost every fairway and the ones I missed didn't put me in any trouble. Irons were OK. Chipping cost me a couple shots and putting was meh.

Less than thrilled about finishing with a double on 18, especially after hitting the fairway on a tough driving hole. 3 hybrid bounced right into a bunker when a bounce left would have put it close to the pin. Half-shanked the bunker shot, awkward pitch to 12 feet, 2 putts.

Might try and play 36 tomorrow but it's supposed to be beastly hot (by Michigan standards).

shot an 86 on a 6900 yard course i think course rating was like 73.3. although it seemed to be a really easy golf course. yeah i played that bad.only third round of the year. went to driving range only once this week and hit irons like crap so yep, hit all my irons like crap today. on the positive side i putted and drove the ball well. as another postive, played 18 in 2 hours 45 minutes...saw only one group all day and that was on the 9th and played through them. problem with the course was no sand in traps....that probably cost me 4 strokes right there as I seemed to get in quite a few of them as I yanked all my irons left all day. except for the ones I flew the green on.......

I play both the blue and whites and oddly enough shoot the same from both. Every time out I'm 90-92 regardless of tees....its becoming like Groundhog's Day.

And the difference between blues and blacks is ridiculous. I want to play the blacks so bad, but it would be a round so full of fail.

...bad hand and new grip lead to some nice shots overall.. 5 shots from out of the sand and 3 drops killed me

37putts - 3 3putts including a 3putt double, 2 1 putts -- feel like I putted better than I did mostly because I made some longer putts to keep it at a 2putt

on 4 FIRs but I had 2 that were just off in the first cut and 2 that I drove just barely through some doglegs

I was terrible on par 3s going 4, 5, 6, 5 with 2 of the holes having to come out of "sand", I adjusted to the hard pack crap after a couple times in it and was able to get out pretty ok...

...I am using a new grip but I will save that revelation for the BS thread, but overall felt really good about the round as it was my best driving day all year (new grip yayy) though my putter was "off" and I probably lost 8+ shots because of sand/drops

had the worst 3 hole stretch of the year (8-8-7 for +10). hit excellent iron shots though, putting was good and terrible depending on the hole and i think i should toss my woods in a lake...don't understand how i can hit crisp iron shots right at my targets for 9 holes and hit my woods so terribly (1 unplayable, 1 OB and 2 in the water), i'm the Mike Weir of amateur golfers imo

think i should go in for a proper driver fitting, maybe a new shaft/head will miraculously stop the brutal rope hooks i'm hitting now

What are the blues? When I played Torrey, the blues were like 7200? I thought the course was fun and good, but a little overrated. The only thing that made it hard to me was the rough was impossible and there aren't really any short holes. I think I shot 82 and I was probably an 8 or 9 handicap. I also would've played the back tees but they weren't out, which kind of sucks.

3 putted #1 from the fringe, had to make a 12 footer 2nd putt on #2, 3 putted #3 from 40 feet, #5 missed 12 footer for birdie, #6 slow lipout from 8 feet (made bogey), #8 missed 10 footer, #10 missed 10 footer, #12 missed 10 footer, #13 missed 10 footer, #14 missed 10 footer, #15 3 putted from fringe, 3 putted #18 from 35 feet, and.....shot a 79 from the back tees at my course....first time breaking 80 from the backs here. Yay.

a crazy round. very very hard to find my ball if it wasn't in the fairway.

the good:

pitching/wedges
some driving
fairway woods/long irons/hybrids were pretty good
putting. back to jumbo grip on putting. very solid
sand shots were genearally good.

the bad:

short irons not so good.
trouble hitting even wedges out of rough. not sure if it's rough or me.

the ugly:

put 3 balls OB off the tee on a treacherous driver hole. probably could get there with a 3 iron then 5 or 6 iron. hybrid with something less than that. why do i insist on driving on tight nemesis holes. giant leak.

things to focus on:

have to start hitting the driver more reliable. my best drives are fantastic but too much tinkering/swing thoughts involved.

work on reading breaks on extremely fast greens. hard to see it with grass that short i find.

get much more accurate with 7 iron and more loft. saw a bunch of pro's last two days and my gosh they eat up the pin under 150 yards.

Tomorrow after the WWC I'll be golfing for the 3rd straight time in 110+ heat index weather (FU linc ne weather). Its getting old...I'd almost welcome some Open Championship weather.

I don't hit it too far, playing the tips there would just be torture for me. Hell on holes 4 and 12 (the long par 4s on each side) I need two perfect swings to reach the green from the whites.

Blues are like 7100 yeah. I love the course, the more I play it the more I respect it. Watching good players that have never played the course before get into the trouble spots and take doubles and worse just makes me appreciate the design.

Breakthrough Round!

Been working all summer to break 90, with a frustrating lack of progress. Best was 96 or so, and mostly around 100.

Then, yesterday, I went out and had no blow-up holes. 44-43 for an 87. Definitely could have gone lower, as I didn't make a single putt longer than 4 feet. I had 11 putts from 4-12 feet, and ran way below expectation in not holing a few of those.

Other than that, I wasn't remarkably consistent, or anything -- just more pars than usual (GIR, baby!) and my bad holes were a few double-bogeys, but nothing worse.

I think I can keep this up, now that I've done it once, but we'll see.

Had a very early tee time today before 6am. Couldn't sleep and just decided to watch Open coverage from 3am until I needed to leave for course. Apparently I can't putt when I skip a night's sleep and I make poor course management decisions as well which isn't surprising.

Round today; 13 greens in regulation, 2 par 4's driven (back to back holes, 9' and 21' eagle putts which led to 2 easy birdies). Five 3 putts (40', 3x25', 16' lol), 2 OB, one ball in a water hazard and shoot a horrid +8 80 with 3 birdies and 39 putts... weee! I missed birdie/eagle putts of 7', 12', 8', 9', 2x4'.This round reminds me of why I quit this game from age 18-26 but I'm just going to blame it on no sleep.

Front nine was especially lolbad. I hit 7 of 9 greens in regulation, had one OB on a stupid 3 wood 2nd shot into a par 5 from a side hill lie 285yds to pin that I shouldn't have attempted and the other green I missed was a par 3 in the fringe 20' from hole that I putted to a foot for a tap in par. Finish the 9 at +4 40 with one birdie. Any reasonably competent single digit handicap player should have been -3 or -4 for that side.

Big lol round today. Playing the whites in a couples event and thought I was going to shoot like 65 since it was so short. Think again.

ridiculous heat today but at least there was some wind unlike yesterday which felt like a sauna...pretty much a yawner round, 6 pars and 12 bogeys but had some nice makeable putts for birdie. putted terribly and left my main chipping/pitching wedge (and the club I use from 80-110ish yards) in the rough on hole 2

short game definitely suffered after that, started using my 56* and kept leaving everything short...missed a couple greens on 100 yardish shots that i was trying to hit with a gripped down PW. need to get online and get rush shipping on a new 52*, never realized how much i relied on the club until i didn't have it

Very frustrated after todays round after shooting 104 yesterday on a tougher course and feeling a better rhythm I do this:

51-57 - 108

Wind was bad and definitely changed the course of some shots and had me make some decisions I regret now.

I lost only 1 ball all day on my nemesis hole, I only ended up in the sand once and I putted better but shot 3 worse.

I just seemed to hit "good" shots with bad results, always had a dangling branch, tree overhang etc... even hit a drive dead center and it hops left and off into the rough on the left. Hit a drive on the toughest hole for me (no room on the right at all) and it leaks to the right but hits a tree and the bounce looks like it stops it from going into the water and it pitches forward and into a little clearing BUT I couldnt find it (yes I took almost 5 minutes looking for it)

I opened the round as bad as I could, I yip my driver to open, and end with a 3putt to open up with an 8...

2nd hole I rally right back on a 136yd par 3 with a massive wind at my back I just punch a low 9 iron to the left of the green leaving a ~25ft putt which I drained for a birdie to get me on track.

Up next is a 473yd par 5 and I hit a fat driver maybe 40yds, but manage to hit a 4h 200yds but push it right leaving me ~250 so I say **** it and hit my 14degree hybrid I rarely hit and I pure it with a fade I wanted to that mimics the FW and leave it just short of the green I pitch and 2 putt for a bogey so I am still feeling good

I follow it up with a double, bogey, bogey and I am content.. but of course end triple, double, double and end up at a 51 which feels more like a 45...

I carded 2 8s, and 2 7s on the back to just crush my confidence right now... It sucks to feel like I am hitting it so much better but to be constantly in bad positions.

I did record my favorite 2 bogeys of all time today..

Par 5 - 489yds - big dogleg right which I try to cut but fade it a little too much and it ends up on a neighboring FW but I am only 200 away (I will likely hit this shot or try to going forward on this hole), I then pull a hybrid left but pin high and 30yds off onto a FW on the OTHER side.. I hit a wedge short, then on and 2putt for a fun bogey

Par 4 368yds - I hit my worst drive of the drive, just a bad high slice but it manages to get over some trees and onto a FW on another hole, I literally have to hit a punch shot backwards to get back to where I can go for the pin but I hit it fat and only 30 or so yards but its in an opening. I look at the shot and I have a blind shot at the pin over a huge row of trees but I should be able to clear them but I am unsure distance wise so I hit a towering 6i that nicks some leaves at the top of the tree but comes down 40yds short in the rough. I hit a little 8i bump and run to 3feet and drain the bogey putt.

At least typing those 2 holes up made me feel better about my round... still annoyed
