Shot 39 on front 9 yesterday (36-36), haven't broken 40 in a 9 in years. Screwed up the back 9 nicely, but still ended up with an 85 for the day, considering I haven't been playing much golf lately, quite happy with that.

I usually am shooting 95-100.

But I recently got Lasik, and this was my first round since, played on a course I had never played before, and on which it POURED for the entire back 9.

44-41=85.

It was incredible. I kept track of a few things, and here are the reasons for the lower score:

I only three-putted once.

I only hit TWO "catastrophe shots." These are just chunks or grounders or dead pulls or blocks fifty yards off line into a lake. You know them, I'm sure.

Anyway, I found that taking an extra two seconds or so over each shot really helped me today.

42-48-90. 2 birdies, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 quad. 8/13 fairways, 3/18 greens, 35 putts.

So nice to head into next weekend's club championship with my A game locked in.

Drove the ball decently for the most part - I did lose a ball on the triple and hit three off the tee on the quad, but there is no reason why I should have lost my first ball. Best guess is a group on the next hole over picked it up.

Otherwise, total FAIL. GIR = 2 birdies and a par. Everything else was awful. A wide variety of bad irons, terribad chipping and lousy putting.

Why yes, I did in fact birdie the 197 yard par 3 by hitting a 3 iron to 8 feet and making the putt. And also, yes I did also birdie the 239 yard par 3 by hitting a 3 wood over the green and holing out from the fringe.

And yes, I did 3 putt from 5 feet on the first hole for a triple and double bogey the 150 yard easy par 3, and snap hook a ball OB on a birdie hole par 5. Golf.

played with my dad today, was 2 over through 7 holes, and he asked if I wanted to play the last two for a dollar.

brag: made a downhill putt from the fringe on the first hole for birdie to go one up

beat: made 8 on the next hole (par 5) to lost the match by one

variance: i haven't made worse than a 5 on that hole in months

My recently completed golf trip to Fairmont, B.C.:

7/31: 51-47-98 at Golden, 6326/70/125. 4/14 fairways, 7/18 greens, 41 (eek) putts.

8/1: 52-51-103 at Radium Resort Springs Course, 6293/69.7/120. 7/14 fairways, 3/18 greens, 39 (eek) putts.

8/2: Played Shadow Mountain, pretty new course which was ridiculous tough and we played tees we shouldn't have been playing. Thankfully for my 'cap, the course wasn't handicapped and we had to play several alternate holes from their 18 because a few of them were flooded from recent rain.

8/2: 49-46-95 at St. Eugene's Mission Course, 6453/70.4/132. 6/14 fairways, 3/18 greens, 37 (eek) putts.

8/3: 47-50-97 at Eagle Ranch Golf Resort, 6239/69.6/133. 11/14 (!) fairways, 3/18 () greens, 33 (yay) putts.

8/4: 50-52-102 at Greywolf Golf Course, 6695/71.7/140. 4/14 fairways, 1/18 greens, 37 putts.

8/5: I guess one of my playing partners has my morning scorecard here from Kimberley Golf Club, since I don't.

8/5: 49-54-103 at Trickle Creek Golf Resort, 6389/70.5/119. 5/14 fairways, 3/18 greens, 34 putts.

8/6: Sadly got rained out through 7 holes at Copper Point Golf Club, which I was playing not badly at and was quite enjoying that course. Damn!

8/7: 49-43-92 at Fairmont Hot Springs Mountainside course, 6552/71.3/121. 1/14 fairways, 4/14 greens, 34 putts.

Quite a fun trip. Fairly satisfied with how I shot considering it was my first time on all of these courses. Overall I'd say I drove the ball poorly except for the one day at Eagle Ranch where I played for my fade/slice and I just couldn't miss the fairway if I tried. Didn't putt well at all but these were greens that I just am not currently used to -- way faster with way more break than the dumpy city courses I play on each week. I hit my irons fairly well over the course of the trip too, just the low greens stats are a result of driving it in to the trees so much.

Would like to go back and see how I do a second or third time around. I would say my favourites were Greywolf and tentatively Copper Point as I was really enjoying it before getting rained out.

Green Spring Valley Club

37-37

6,500 Par 72

Hit it pretty well Tee to Green but made only 2 birdies on short course. Greens were really really good today though.

Played Rarity Pointe Golf course today in Lenoir City, Tn. It's about 45 min SW of Knoxville, and was well worth the drive. The last 2 courses I played, I paid the same amount for each via golf now and left both feeling like I overpaid. Well, $20 for this course was the same thing as me robbing the pro shop. It was in immaculate condition, and was a tough, but fair test of the game. Lots of elevation change, and trouble if you sprayed, but forgiving enough to leave room for slightly errant shots. Greens were tough, most were tiered or had a hogsback in them. The pins were tucked away today too, so that added to the challenge.

Here is a picture of #7, and is a good example of the course, with elevation change, nice sightlines, and some trouble. The guy swinging is not me, but who I was paired up with. It's a cell phone pic, so the quality is meh.

Funny story, the guy on the tee actually got his cart stuck in the woods to the right when he drove into them to find his ball. The 3 of us had to wedge it out slowly as it was stuck on a tree stump.

As for my game I shot 41-39 = 80, though I played back to front so the 39 was first. I hit the first 5 GIR's, and was +1 through 5, with 1 3-putt. I missed only 2 legit birdie chances in those holes, the other 3 were tough 2-putts, one of which I failed to convert.

The rest of the way I only hit 3/13 GIR's. I developed a power pull with my irons along the way, and missed several long and left which were death in a lot of cases, as the green would scream away from me. I scrambled ok, but not great. I putted poorly by my standards (32 putts, but didn't make anything of real length, or leave myself as many tap ins as normal), but that was because of the green's challenge and tough pin placements. I made 5 putts of about 5-7' in length for par that were either second putts, or after chips.

I have to work on the pulls a bit, but I've very satisfied with my swing right now. Also very happy to find a great course around here. Hope this continues.

41 (par 37). On the positive side I made two birdies, otherwise it was a carnival of FAIL.

Really not happy about missing a bunch of three footers.

Shot 77 on sunday. I'm basically as good as tiger woods.

Although his was prob from the tips and 7400 yards, mine was in the pouring rain for 10 holes so we will call it evens.$

Cinnabar Hills in San Jose has aerified...it's like playing Plinko (and the holes are a lot smaller than pretty much every other course I've ever seen after this process).

Hello awesome thread. I shot a whopping 98 today! I'm pretty bad.. question.. is there any good vids with some drills or something to help improve my swing somewhere? I don't want to get pro lessons or anything.. just try to practice and memorize a better/consistent swing..

38 (par 37). Man I hope I play like that this weekend.

Edit: The greens at my course must be super soft - I got a 3 iron with a Top Flite to stop dead (it even backed up a couple inches) on the last hole.

Played this nice little executive course today, designed by Doug Carrick one of the best course designers in Canada. Was it ever a beauty! It resembled a wind swept links course and featured 16 par 3s and 2 par 4s, one of which was 450 uphill.
The green complexes were very well done and they were rolling very quickly.
#13 featured a Biarritz green:
Quote:
A Biarritz, or Biarritz green, is a green that features a deep gully bisecting its middle.
I couldn't believe the elevation changes in the middle of this green, so sick.

shot +12 but made a few of the best pars all year

37-42-79. 1 birdie, 3 doubles. 8/13 fairways, 11/18 greens, 34 putts.

That might be the most disappointed I've ever been to shoot 79. Kind of a waste of a top shelf ball striking day. Sick to only make one birdie - I left five putts one revolution short. Also had a chip shot stop one revolution short. Short game FAIL on the doubles.

Still, if I can do it again tomorrow I'll have a chance in the hacker flight.

Played pretty awesome on the back 9 but made nothing from outside of 10ft

41-40 At Murphy Creek from the Blacks 74.6/131.

Third round of the season, and I'm already back in my mid-season mindset of taking 2 holes to get settled down, only to go on a nice run until somewhere on the back. This one started bogey-double, and then blowing up on the 12th (pictured). It's a 270ish yard forced carry (5200') off the tee, which led me to a nice and tidy triple.

I have to work on calming down at the beginning of a round. I even do it at the practice tee pre-round. It seems like it takes me roughly 20 or so balls before I'm even making decent enough contact, which inevitably leads to pre-round panic. Golf is so effing mental.
