nice work Bob. anytime you can say you did your 'best of whatever ever' in a positive way is an accomplishment, especially when you can see that 4 putt can easily be turned in to a 2 putt...keep grinding.

41 (par 36). 1 birdie, 1 double bogey

Nice to start the round out with a birdie. Double was a little unlucky, I pulled a long approach on a par 5 about 30 feet left of the green, right into the middle of a blue spruce. Doh.

Messed around with a combo iron set, pulled the 5-7-9 and swapped in the S55s. Doesn't feel like I hit enough irons to make a decision - 1x 5i (excellent), 1x 6i (good), 1x PW (excellent). Everything else was driver, hybrids and around the green.

Booker, was that pulled par 5 approach your 2nd or your 3rd shot?

3rd. Mediocre drive and 2nd shot left me 190 yards out. Not many par 5s I can reach in two anymore.

same here, but there are still a few I can make a run at. so the 5 is your longest iron then it’s hybrids & woods? you hit three full irons in nine holes?

Correct.

Par 4, driver, 6i
Par 4, driver, 5h
Par 5, driver, 3h, 3h
Par 3, 4h
Par 4, driver, 5i
Par 4, driver, 4h
Par 3, 5h (could have hit 5i prob)
Par 5, driver, 3h, pw
Par 4, driver, 5h

weird nine holes. so you probably played it with six clubs, maybe seven

Plus use of 9i, 54 (once)and 60 for chipping and short pitches around the green. Didn’t touch the 4w, 7i or 8i.

I’d be just fine with an 8 club setup.

Probably caring less. I said to myself I needed to shoot 72 yesterday for some reason. When I knew that was gone maybe that helped. Also pat 5 scoring helped.

9th - Tees were up so probably only playing around. Had 145 and a pw for my 2nd (I'm not THAT long, had one good ho on the cart patt. 2-putt par.

13th - 504y and I had 180 in (had a small cart path mark on it, so must have hit it on the second hop). Hit 8 iron on (ball was flying yesterday, had a jumper lie) and 2-putt par.

18 - 514y and I had around 230 left. Had to keep it low under a branch and play a big cut. Left it 30y short of the green. Pitched to 5 feet and made it.

Also had one other birdie in that stretch on 16. It's 358y on the card but you can cut the corner over some townhomes and I had 45y to the pin. Pitched that one to 5 feet and made it.

So I guess good driving (and a bit of cart path luck) was the difference.

According to the USGA, before you have a handicap established, you should not take (for establishing a handicap purposes) a score of more than par plus 5 shots on a hole.

Once your handicap is established, you don't take a score (again, for handicap purposes), a score higher than net double bogey.

Let's say you establish a handicap and for the sake of simplicity it's 18. That means you get one stroke per hole on each of the 18 holes.

So on par 3s, a double bogey is 5, but you can take a 6 because you subtract the handicap stroke. Your gross 6 becomes a net 5. If you made a 7, you'd be limited to counting 6. Make a 10, still limited to 6.

The handicap ranking of holes is marked on the scorecard, 1-18. If your handicap is more than 18, you get extra shots on the hardest holes (with the lowest handicap number) -- if you are a 19 handicap, you get one shot on each of the 18 holes and a second shot on the #1 handicap hole. If you're a 36, you get two shots on every hole.
This is such a great explanation. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain that. I'm definitely going to be referring to this very post next time I'm on the course.

My handicap based on the 8 full courses I've played this year is 29.9 lol.

So like if I play someone who's handicap is an 18 (to make it easy) he gets an extra shot on every hole. I get an extra shot on the easiest (highest handicap #) 6 holes and two extra shots on the 12 hardest holes then we figure it out at the end?

And for entering your score you enter the gross and the app calculates your net right?

Thanks again for the awesome explanation.

You kinda have the idea. Instead of the 18 getting a shot s hole, and you (29.9), getting a shot a hole plus an extra on the 12 toughest, you take and use the difference.

Essentially, the bolded parts cancel out and you only get the difference (30 - 18 = 12). So you'd get a shot a hole on the 12 hardest holes.

41 par 34. really dirty 41 to be honest considering my mental mistakes.

missed 1st green 2 clubs short because it was into a pretty stiff wind.

pulled 5 iron when i should have pulled 6 iron on 3rd shot on par 5 second hole. wasn't sure over the ball. miss hit the 5 iron thin. it bounced onto the green pin high without going more than 12 feet in the air.

missed the birdie putt from 7 feet on the low side. i prefer to miss short putts high.

should have pulled 4 iron on approach to 3rd green, but i forgot that i recently added the longer irons to my bag and i was thinking either 5 iron or 5 wood. went with 5 iron and came up short in the hazard.

3 putt from 10 feet on 3rd hole for triple bogey.

pulled 54 wedge on par 3 fourth hole into the wind and came up 13 yards short of the pin.

didnt focus on getting my weight on my left side on the chip and flubbed it.

wrong club into the wind on the approach to the fifth hole, came up 10 yards short of the green.

left birdie putt on par 3 sixth hole on the low side. at least i got it there.

didnt keep my eye on tee shot on par 3 seventh hole. made it halfway to the green.

didnt finish with correct held off follow through for the fade on 9, which is absolutely necessary to have any realistic shot of getting over the river in front of the green.

so that's almost 10 shots i could have saved in that round if i had the mental game together. my babe ruth league baseball coach would have been all over me for the mental errors. i counted the wrong clubs as (.5 shots each) and the big mistakes (1 shot each) and the 5 iron on third hole was a 2 stroke swing. since i got lucky on par 5 second hole, i didn't count that mistake. so realistically i could have had a much better score if i had done things differently mentally.

but on the bright side, i'm improving rather quickly and theres no physical pain to speak of other than my feet, which don't hurt at all after today's 9. and i did hit 4/6 fairways off the tee on the long holes. my missed fairways were 10 yards to the right on par 5 second hole(5 wood went pretty far but didn't draw) and 5 yards left on par 4 ninth hole(5 wood went pretty far but didnt fade). both shots went exactly where I was aiming.

not counting the lucky 5 iron on second hole, I had two decent approach shots(do you call tee shots on par 3s approach shots? idk).

seven iron from 155 on par 3 sixth hole to 10 feet short left of the pin.

54 wedge from 100 on par 4 seventh hole to 10 feet pin high to the left.

I...FAILED...MISERABLY. Can' say I didn't see this coming based on my trend but it was REALLY BAD. I did start off good on #1, made par with a two putt from the fringe 60 feet away. Then nearly jarred in on #2 leaving be a tap-in birdie. Someone else in my group hit the flag and dropped down next to the hole.

Then the wheels started coming off. 3rd is a 390ish par 4 dogleg right. I hit my bit miss off the tee which is a heel cut. Problem is there is trees right off the tee. I hit it solid into the forest but got lucky and it bounced back out to the fairway. Wedged it to 70 yards out and proceeded to hit a little flailing shot into front bunker. Short-sided I run it 20 feet past. Then proceed to MAKE the 20 foot downhill double breaker for bogey

#4 defines me. 441 par 4, downpour starts when we get to the tee. I slice one left into the lateral hazard. Drop, pull it right to other hazard. Drop, go over green nearly in hazard. Hit #6 on to 12 feet and sink it for a triple.

CLOSING - Finished Par, Par, Par by missing 15, 20, and 10 footers for birdie.

I'm 105th/119. Unless I shoot 70 tomorrow I have no chance at making the cut, currently 7 shots off the cut line. I was gonna say **** it and not show up tomorrow, but why not. Gonna be a lot of drivers pulled tomorrow.

Charity scramble today. We finished somewhere in the pack with 66 (-5). Top scores were 58, 60 and 62. Team was myself, two men over 70 who are about 18 hcps and a woman over 70 who is probably about a 36. We've played this event as a team for many years, though I had to miss last year and it changed venues a couple years ago.

Our score was about as bad as possible, we made 3 bogeys and missed putts in all sorts of demoralizing ways. I specialized in hitting putts that broke around the cup ending up directly behind it. Another team member had four putts that were dead center but stopped an inch or two short.

We did have one eagle, on a par 4. One of our seniors cut off a dogleg carrying it over the water (a 185 yard carry) and I pitched in from 20 yards short of the green, flipping a high 60 degree wedge shot and having it trickle down into the cup.

Fun day and a real bonus considering the forecast for today was awful all week. Just a few minutes of light rain, no thunder, no lightning.

skipping tomorrow would be not finishing, and you can't close what you don't finish.
take that momentum from the last three holes and run with it

43-45-88. No birdies, 3 double bogeys. 69.2/124/ just over 6,000 yards.

Strangely enough I'm fairly pleased. Ball striking is improving. Hybrids in particular are producing quality shots and I've picked up some distance. Score was about as bad as it could have been because putting was way, way off. I must have missed ten putts inside five feet. Had a chip bounce off the pin but otherwise the short game wasn't too good. It took a couple failed efforts to realize that the turf wasn't going to allow me to use a low-bounce 60 degree wedge.

Had a particularly bizarre experience on a par 3. The pin was in the far front left section of the green. Only 115 yards over a ravine, I hit a little extra to be sure, carried it right over the flag about 20 feet past the pin. Seemed like a good shot.

WRONG. I had no chance to keep my putt on the green.

From where I was standing everything sloped hard right to left. I played my putt as far right as I could, trying to catch just a little of the shaggy fringe to slow it down before it headed for the hole. Hit it about as well as I could have but it just glanced off the fringe and the ball picked up speed as it raced down the slope, past the hole, off the green ... and into the hazard.

Fortunately it caught a tuft of grass and didn't go way down the slope, but I still hit my third shot from my knees out of the ravine. Knocked it to three feet .... and missed. Doh. Just your standard three putt double bogey.
