I'd love to try alternate shot rounds with buddies for fun, but hell if I'm going to pay for a full round and not play my own ball. I guess I'll wait for a membership some day to do that sort of stuff.

Ive only played it once - my old home club had an annual 4ball championship. I was playing I think off about 17 and the guy I got paired with was about 14, but older guy, not a long hitter.

I went into it really concerned I wouldn’t enjoy having to play another guys shot, or stitching my partner up with poor play myself. My partner ended up being a great guy and really good company, and we shot a net -6 which was good a tie for first place!

It's an interesting change of pace, but I don't think I've ever talked to anyone who's a huge fan. I play in an event every year that features 9 holes of alternate shot and don't think we've ever done especially well. Historically I've taken the tee on the odd holes and my partner the even, but we flip-flopped this time since he got to move up a set of tees and it's a big advantage on a couple of the odds. At least that was the theory.

Played 6 holes of it in a 6/6/6 tournament (best ball/scramble/alternate)and won that portion. I really concentrated harder and put a bit more effort into the alternate shot portion to make sure I didnt let down my partner. Usually I play alot more casually and quickly.

Years ago we played in this event and my partner had a bad case of the laterals with his irons. We were able to map out a strategy where he could hit driver or 7 wood for every shot outside of wedge range when it would be his turn. May have been the best score we ever posted playing alternate shot.

Played a 7000 yard course w/140 slope on Sunday. It was a charming combination of hills and mud laid out in the classic Robert Trent Jones "Deep down inside I hate golfers" style.

It was WWI trench level mud. Had to dig a shoe out a few times. Sometimes the nearest point of relief from casual water was the parking lot. Just an awful mess. It seems like it would be hard to make a sharp sidehill fairway a quagmire, but there we were.

So we played it down from the tips. Feel the pain.

58-57-115. So a 100 net. 7000 yards of mud is too much when your driver usually carries 230 or so, and having to try not to fall on every step does bad things to leg strength and concentration.

Made a 12, an 11, a handful of triples. The 12 was enough to win that hole. My friend parred the first 7 holes, which was nuts, and then decided he liked seeing golf balls go over out of bounds fences and made a 13.

Funny thing is my handicap diff for that round was about the same as a 91 I shot on the easiest course in my personal rota....

41

2 bogeys, 1 triple, 6 pars

Was a marker for a member/guest tournament today. Was fun because the course is playing really fast and I just hit driver on every hole, even the ones I normally don't do that.

#3 plays about 290y if you cut the corner over the water. Shot #1 went into the houses on the other side of the water. Shot #3 from the tee went to 25 feet. Missed the par putt.

9-hole scramble again, longer tees than last wk, team scored a -4 with a lone -5 winning. My drive & approach were used on 3 of our birdie holes, including the skin we won to pay for our golf. My putting was a total joke though.

Frustrating one of the day : longer par5, we get into the greenside bunker in 2, shortsided with green running away from us. Only way to get it close is to land it in the fringe. I go first, strike it nice, but land it just 3-4" short in the rough and end up on the fringe ~10' from the pin. Rest of our group gets nowhere near, don't seem to even try the fringe shot. We make par, when birdie would have gotten us to -5 and winning the whole thing on tiebreakers.

4 birdies, 1 bogey, 1 double, 3 pars

Played as a marker again. Tied my all-time record of 4 consecutive birdies. Longest birdie putt was 6 feet.

How bad were the other approaches if you had to take a short sided downhill bunker shot

Pretty damn bad. Our weaker players put up pretty horrible layups, next best shot was a ~100 yd that you had to go pretty low under some tree branches.

The 2nd shot is a tough one, 220+yds from the tees we played, guarded on the direct line/right side by trees, guarded on the left by water, not a very wide fairway, and the ball in the fairway is always above your feet (for a RH) so it's hard to cut one in or take it over the trees. It's pretty much always a 3 shot hole unless you are a big time bomber.

51/42 on a difficult Robert Trent Jones course (at Treetops) while wearing a t-shirt, 2 sweatshirts a coat and an occasional winter coat especially early on, so I'm not too bothered by the high score. The course was absolutely gorgeous.

43/44 on an interesting Tom Fazio course 2 days later during much better weather and only a little rain. Also a beautiful course.

It was our first time ever at Treetops Resort in northern Michigan and we will definitely be back. What a fantastic place!

42-41-83. 3 birdies, 3 double bogeys.

Pretty pretty bad. Couldn't seem to get through the ball. Short game also poor.

Well this was a interesting one.

39-44-83

4 birdies, 3 pars, 7 bogeys, 4 doubles

Was -2 after 2 holes. Went for the green on the driveable 3rd and couldn't find it, leading to a double. Lost the full swing a bit on the 10th tee and limped home.

42-43-85. 1 birdie, 3 double bogeys.

Awful. Played a really short setup and just could not take advantage. Driver wasn't too bad, everything else sucked.

Terrible. Fatted a bunch of iron shots. Took 3 to get out of a bunker. Chunked 2 chips. Was cold and damp. Pretty miserable day overall.

35-37-72 par 72 74.1/142 on a 50 degree 20+ mile an hour gusty windy day. Really didn't hit it well at all, but was probably the most solid putting day I've had in a long time. 7/18 greens, 24 putts. 4 birdies, 4 bogeys.

Also had a big money match, so was happy with how I scored given that.

45-37-82. Started pretty nicely first few holes then just lost it until I made the turn. Bogeyed #10, then finished out with an even par 8 holes (birdied a hole I rarely par, saved 3 pars). 7 fairways, 7 GIR

Really liking the reverse overlap putting grip, scaring the hole a lot more and my pace control is solid.

39-40-79, ~6,400 yards. One bird, no doubles.

First time I've ever broken 80!!!!

Very nice, congrats!

35-42-77

3 birdies, 9 pars, 4 bogeys, 2 doubles

Was -1 through 11 holes with a string of 9 straight greens in reg. Doubled 12 after missing the green then 3-putting from about 12 feet. Save bogey getting up and down from the bunker on 13. 3-putt bogey 14. Nice stretch.

One of these days I'm going to put it all together again.

Nice job, g-bebe - nice barrier to breakthrough and get sub-80. No doubles is like a dream of mine

I shot 39-42 81 Saturday (70.5/129). Tripled 7 & 18 - doubled 12. Other than that it was a great round.

Then 37-45 82 yesterday (70.2/131). Bogied 9 to start the fall after being even through 8. Tripled 10 & 12, doubled 13. Ended with 4 pars to keep it respectable.

12 pars/better each day - prob my best weekend ever in that regard - but the big numbers hurt when you are trying to post a few mid-70s rounds.

I love the fall golf though; looking forward to this next month while it's still really good here before the snow flies

38-40-78. 3 birdies, 2 double bogeys.

Solid considering that I haven't played in a while. One wayward drive, still got a par out of it. Had three or four additional birdie putts that just missed, including one that hit the back of the hole and refused to drop.

42-48?-90ish

Kinda gave up late in the round and pulled driver out everywhere like it was a scramble.

Almost killed my inter-club partner who was in the group in front of me. 5th hole is a 309y par 4 when you cut the lake. Had a solid 2 club wind at my back (didn't realize it was that much wind on the tee) and the drive landed pin hgh, 10 feet away from him. Had to get in the cart to drive up and apologize for that one.

Missed the 25 foot eagle putt by 2 inches, leaving it on the high side.

The rest of the round sucked. First time playing in a week and it showed.

Club championship in 2 weeks. I should get plenty of time to practice between now and then.

Scramble today, managed -11 (-16 won). One revolution short of winning the entire skin pot but still a fun day.

Scramble for me today too. Was me (3 hcp), a 5, a 25 and a 36ish. All of the par 4's were basically the exact same at 340ish yards. I would drive us near the green, then we would pitch it to 15 feet and then we all miss the putt. I think we were something like -6. Just terrible.
