Quite literally all over the place today. Game of streaks.

4 pars to start
then 3 straight doubles
then 4 straight pars
bogey
par
birdie
bogey
double
par
double

All over the place.

I've been choking up on a 45" shaft about an inch for the past 8-9 years but some of the old guys at the club are hitting it within 10 yards of my drives with their new 46" drivers so I've been thinking about finally upgrading.

Part of me wants to get two drivers with a 44" one for tighter courses and a 46" one for bombing it.

Anyone have any insight into this stuff? How much distance would an extra 1.5" give me?

Complicated question but I am pretty sure you are a pretty low cap player so we can say you hit the center of the club equally with both I have seen it is between 1 mph per half inch to inch. So split the difference and say 1.5 inches gives you 2mph club head speed which should be 3mph ball speed. I plugged that into flight scope and a 160 mph ball speed with good launch and spin(13* 2200) carries 275 and 163 carries 281. So 6 yards carry if you hit the center equally as much and you don't have too much spin with the driver. 6 yards isn't a ton but at the same time if you can control it half a club shorter is not nothing.

I found I couldn't hit the center of the face with a 46.5" when I was messing with a really long one.

I haven't felt nearly as consistent with the longer clubs I've tried but I figured that it would take some time getting used to. Not sure if it's worth it if it's only 6 yards though. I guess I need to go get a proper fitting for the first time in my life.

One thing that kinda surprises me is that you don't hear of the tour guys changing driver specs based on the course (maybe they do though?). Some of these guys only hit driver on like 2-3 holes so you'd think there could be some benefit in messing around with it to optimize for carry/roll/whatever depending on the course.

I bought a Callaway Rogue on Saturday...or ordered it at least. I was playing a Callaway FT9 from 10ish years ago and it was my first time hitting on the monitor.

Pretty crazy the difference technology makes. Clubhead speed with FT9 like 95-97, carried it like 234ish into the wind.

Rogue: clubhead speed 105-108, carried it 254 into the wind. One I hit WAY too high or so I thought, and it was like 252 carry or something.

Spinrate went from like 2900 something to like 2200 something. I've been hesitating for years to get a new driver and I really didn't do very much homework, but those numbers were enough to sell me.

You increased clubhead speed 10mph? Seems suspect...

That is way weird unless you had a 43 inch 100 gram shaft in your old one. Totally believe the yardage gain, as dropping spin does wonders.

Was it on a foresight unit with no real club data and they use a fixed smash factor to guess club speed. In that case hitting the center of the face with a better driver will show up as way higher club speed.

Played 18 Thursday, 27 Friday, 27 Saturday and 18 Sunday. First and last rounds were cart path only so I'm whipped.

42-40-82
42-43-85 and 39
39-43-82 (I think) and ~ 45
42-47-89ish

All scores approximate since I never was the one keeping score. Driver was mostly decent, irons OK, chipping and pitching mostly better than average, putting dismal. I could never find a comfortable putting stroke so I mostly missed everything. Made about six birdies, should have hit double digits if I could putt at all.

No idea. It was a flightscope. My old driver was 63g "extra stiff". The new one is just "stiff" and it was a black and yellow shaft. Can't remember the weight....but 76g? That doesn't seem to make any sense though.

Yeah I didn't mean anything by it other than no logical reason to pick up that much swingspeed with a new club. Ball speed is very possible, but if you are hitting it farther that is the only thing that matters.

Most shafts come in a 60 and 70 gram line. So the S in the 60 gram line is like 64g and x is 66.

&0 gram line might have a S that is 75 and x is 77. So you could have a S heavier than an X

Holy wind. About as tough as have played in. Weather said 29 mph and 38 degrees. It kept switching directions and randomly laying down. If you didn't flush the shot you were doomed.

39 - 37 = 76
27 putts no 3 putts
6/14 FIR
8/18 GIR

3 birdies 7 bogeys

Torrey Pines South - 6,628y 73.1/133

About a 1 club wind on the day. I didn't hit the ball for ****. The course didn't seem to be overly difficult with the exception of the greens. They are massive and the break towards the water played havoc with me all day long. I had 5 3-putts as opposed to only 3 1-putts.

Great views.

That is solid for there. How was the rough? That is the usually the hardest part combined with rock hard greens when I was there but that was a good while back. I gave up trying to hit anything longer than a 9 iron. It is also funny to turn around and see where the tips are.

I thought the greens were very receptive. As far as the rough goes it was cut since the tournament so it wasn't bad at all. I would say I only had one really tough lie and that was for my 2nd out of the left rough on 18 and I was still able to get a hybrid on the ball. That happened to be my only birdie too. Hit a 58* to 5 feet.

Tee tips are crazy long. They added distance for the 2021 Open and it's now 7,707 yards, at sea level.

lol 7700 is silly long. I last played there when the greens were less than a year old so that is probably why I couldn't hold them to save my life. First bounce was just crazy even with a wedge.

Yeah..that was definitely my conclusion. I had my wife (she's a golf coach) come watch the screen just to make sure the club fitter wasn't like "lying", but 10 years of technology had a bigger impact than I suspected, so I figured, hey 20 yards of carry into the wind added? Whatever. Buying.

Always thought of myself as a short knocker. I always say my average drive in neutral conditions is like 270-275. Seems like I hit it like 240 any time it's windy, so I was pretty surprised I was carrying it 254 into the wind.

Played http://www.kingslinks.ca/ shot 81 but the day ended amazing...double bogeyed 17 then came to 18 striped a drive in to a decent wind had 155yd left to front pin hit a beauty 9 iron right at it. As we got to the green I went to a ball around 15 ft away and a guy I was plying with said that's mine. I was pissed thinking I spun off the bank towards the water so started to walk down....another guy in the group says " titelist 7?" I am like yes...he goes its in the hole! Great way to end a day.

Westin Mission Hills - Pete Dye Resort Course - Par 70 - 6,455y

Classic Pete Dye course. He puts water to the left of the green then puts bunkers or grass bunkers that sit 15 feet below the surface of the green on the other side. I will for sure not use a driver on this course. There is maybe 1 hole it could be used but I will opt for a 2-iron or another wedge in the bag come tournament time in September.

Right now I am struggling to take my driving range swing on to the course. I am hitting nice gentle draws on the range then have a big slice on the course. Go back to the range after the round and I have the draw back within 3 swings. WTF!

golf is so frustrating...

88 in winter conditions on pretty wide open but trickish greens and approach shots.

had huge problems with chunking wedges recently in winter conditions. i'm guessing 40% conditions, 60% bad technique.

so i fixed that. read up on players having hands in line with front pant pocket on setting up to every shot. just change stance/ball position....

everything else had been pretty good. but now i have problems hitting longer clubs off fairway and from rough... not sure if it's related to wedge change or not.

seems like i can never get everything going at same time.

analogously, you tame some hard holes that have been giving you major trouble in past and then a bunch of problems pop up on holes that are quite easy.

i think the last part (easy vs. hard holes) has somewhat to do with frequency of play. i've really improved my game but if you don't play/practice that often i think bad shots are plentiful and fairly random (random = ruin easy hole)...

thinking of switching back to more flexible shafts for 3w, 5w.... i want to play blues/black/tips/etc. much more in near-intermediate term and that's all kinds of long clubs into greens. and you need to get those shots up alot. 3w especially. regular vs. stiff 5w has all kinds of advantages and disadvantages.

Westin Mission Hills - Gary Player Course

43-39-82

Finally found a swing at the turn and started playing much better. Figured out it was a tempo thing. Left 3 of 4 straight birdie putts on the lip short on the back otherwise I could have scored much better. Just have to hang on the first few holes of the course then it gets much easier.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I rolled up on a par 3 to watch a guy in the group in front of us get a hole in one. Looked good the whole way.

Captain's choice our team shot 59 tied for 1st. I won long drive and closest to the pin and cleaned up on some prizes. We lost the handicap tiebreaker and ironically we used 3 mulligans on the tougest handicap hole and lipped out all 3 mulligan putts. Craziest ****.

First Am Tour event post swing change...not good.

The triple on 5 was a fun one. In the front edge of the bunker. Right before the bunker was GUR (where the tractor comes out of the bunker). We determined I was in the bunker and not GUR so there is a massive pile of dirt in front of my ball. Hit and catches top of lip and rolls back into a footprint that nobody raked. Got the 3rd out and managed to 3-putt from about 30 feet.

Quad on 8 I drive it into an unplayable in the trees. Take a drop and hit my 3rd 134 out....right into a divot. It's sitting in the back of it so I can't get a clean strike and my 4th comes out short into hazard right of green. Then I go mental. No clean shot so I shoot it right-handed, twice, for a total of 3 feet. Chip 7 on, lip out for 8 and take a 9.

Quad on 11 over green, blade it into front bunker, 2 to get out, and 3-putt for a 7.

Triple on 14 I drive into lateral but playable. Hit it out and rolls into hazard in front of green. Hit 4th on and 3-putt again for triple.

Other than that I played great, lol. +14 on 4 holes.

This course was a dog track. They used to hold the JCPenney Classic there (PGA and LPGA teams) before it went to Innisbrook. Now it's just complete garbage.

Can't wait for the rains to come back so grass can grow again.

Brutal couple holes there, had a similar fate today. Shot +4 thru the first 11 before three consecutive triples threatened to kill my round. Bounced back with +2 thru the final 4 for a +15 total but damn, that three hole stretch was savage

was 29 degrees when I teed off

First 4 holes the greens were parking lots, next 4 very firm then they got to normal. Didn't matter much as I put on an amazing display off hitting every tree on the course,

43 - 38 = 81

30 putts with one 3 putt
4/14 FIR
