Had my first experience playing matchplay yesterday.

My home club is doing a 60th anniversary tournament, and the Saturday comp field a couple of weeks ago was the qualifying/round 1. Of 100ish starters, the top 32 Stableford point scorers qualified for the match play rounds, and I qualified in 20th with 39 points (after shooting 27 of those thru the first 10 holes ffs)

Played against a mate in round 1 who had to give me 7 shots. Didn't help him that his driver and putter had gone cold, while my putter was hot.

After conceding the first early, the front 9 was a constant of him being 1 up, then I'd take the next. He made a great par putt on 9 to go into the back 1 up, before I took control. I won the next 4 with a 6' for bogey on 10 after we both found water, then lipped out for birdie on 11. He missed a short putt to halve 12 then I birdied 13 for the first time in my life. Index 3, long par 4 with a really tough green. Piped a drive to the left rough 110m out, then stuck my gap wedge to 12 feet, pin high and holed it.
We halved 14, I inexplicably 3-putted 15 leaving me 2 up with 3 to play, then he made a terrible 3-putt on 16 to hand me the match.

28 total putts with 2 birdies and 5 gir.
Never had two birdies in a round on my home course before, so pretty stoked with that!

Pretty happy with that considering I haven't played in 2 1/2 weeks.

First round in over a week and it showed early. Missed a total of 3 putts 3 feet and in. Also missed two short birdie putts as well. Was a little better putting on the back.

Yeah so that was fun. If there has ever been a fairways are way overrated this was it. Super slow old dudes in front but the 2 guys I played with were cool so was totally fun. Helps I was hitting the driver far. If I don't get another round in this season this will be a good one to end on. Handicap still went up 0.2 lol

Thanks. Yeah I play up the wrong fairway when the tee is tucked in the back left. The first 2 trees that look different at the start of the dog leg are really really tall and zero chance to go over. I have huge misses when I play a draw so I have to basically hit a dead straight ball that only goes 270 or I go through the fairway and a block puts me in jail. I can just hit a stock fade going left and can hit the ball high enough to get back over the trees to get to the green in 2. Added bonus of being 10 yards shorter going that way.

First time I had ever driven 18. Granted it was the middle tees only playing 310 and was a bit downwind but it is about 25 feet elevation gain up the hill. Just crushed it rolled up past some slow old guys on the front of the green. They looked pissed and I just yelled sorry and gave a little shrug. The small things in life that are entertaining after watching the old dudes play a 4+ hour round with not a single person in front of them and would speed up when my group got close to the tee so they could rush and not let us play through then spend 2 minutes each reading putts.

Reminds me that I forgot to mention in my post that I almost drove the 16th Sunday. With my right to left movement you can see how far I have to start the ball over the condos. I was 10 yards short of the green (was a good bit downwind). I have put it in the front right bunker before but never on. One day.

lol, nothing more fun then aiming over/houses condos. I had some old lady yell at me as I was aiming right at her and her house. Not my fault you bought a house on the inside of a dogleg that is only like 260 carry. That and people who buy a house on the right side of a fairway 220 out.

Practice round for my tournament Saturday. Front 9 had 8 GIR, hit all fairways, 18 putts. Back 9 the swing got away from me a bit.

The greens are 2 to 3 time larger than what I am used to so lag putting will be a big thing for me coming up. Greens were verticut and top dressed so they were on the slow side. Hope they are much better come Saturday.

That reminds me of this hole at Kissimmee Bay. When I lived in Florida I knew a pro who would drive straight at the green. I was jealous because I never had the length to do it.

Everything was a struggle today, especially on the front. 2+ club gusty wind that was tricky especially on downwind partial wedges, would knock the ball out of the air if you didn't get it up fast enough. Short game was awful, not a single par save, no clue the last time that happened. Wind dried up the greens and it seemed every chip ran out 4-5 feet farther than I thought then I would try and learn and have it check up on the greens that weren't as exposed.

Do you generally overpower the course? Also, how open is it? Tee it high and let it fly?

I wouldn't say I over power it per say. The par 5's are pretty short, 2 under 500 and 1 around 515 plus a weird 90 degree dogleg that I play as a 3 shot shot hole. I would say I over power those holes and 2 or 3 shortish holes.

The fairways are 20-25 yards wide only but the area inside the tree lines is 40 yards on most holes. The rough only is penal if it has been raining to I don't worry about fairways as long as I have a clear look. It is 6481 so not as short as some courses around here. One plays like 6050 from the tips and that one I over power.

Game golf has me averaging just over 270 with the driver so while not long it is plenty long on sub 7k courses. There are a few holes that don't fit my eye so I use 3w and the rest are bomb and gouge holes. Does have 2 tough 4's though. One 440 into the typical wind and you have to be on left side of fairway to not be blocked out. Other is 450 to front, 10 yards uphill and into the wind.

For the most part I don't play enough hard courses which really limits my ability to get good but the course is 2 minutes away and I am lazy.

Put me on a course with tons of water and ob routed through houses and it gets ugly quick.

3rd/10 in my flight. Was one shot off the lead (both were in my group). I actually thought we all tied but I didn't count correctly. Not bad after being +3 thru 2 holes.

Missed 3 putts of the 2-3 foot range. Just killed me. Had one skin and got a gift card for 3rd.

Played a scramble today, finished -8. Low 40s, off and on rain, wind, good times.

82 from the whites (winter golf)..... played really well. 1 birdie, 9 pars, 6 bogeys, 2 doubles (both stupid and needless).....

what have i done differently,

1) went back to modified bobby clampett "impact zone"......

2) realized i was hitting down far too much and behind ball. concentrate on getting the club through the ball close to horizontal on everything. basically necessitates much more hand action but i think it's correct.

So I got play a country club here in CT yesterday. We won a free round because we won a charity scramble held there earlier in the year, mainly due to my father in law who is 68 and the second best short game player I know, besides the wife. Sigh.

Round started off promising with a perfectly straight drive of 305 yards but ended up in the side bunker (if I hit it 307 it was on the green with about a 15 footer for eagle). Ended up blading it out of wet sand OB for a double.

I played the 5 par threes one under, which I think is a first of any round for me ever. But played the 4 par fives 12 over. Complete opposite of my game. Lol me.

Played horrible for most of the round, played the last 6 holes in +1 to salvage it. Season winding down here in NJ, hoping to get a few more rounds in.

There is something peaceful about being the only person on a golf course. Yardages were a bit of a crap shoot today seeing as my range finder battery was dead, gusty 1/2 - 2 club wind and first sub 50 degree round this fall. Time to start taking my clubs upstairs because my grips feel a bit weird when they are cold, especially the superstroke putter.

Played the tips at my course in prep for the club championship in a week and a half. There are 3 holes where I am going to have a tough time getting off the tee. I think I found something on one of the holes, still figuring the other two out. I will take pics of what they look like when I play on Friday.

Got the first 3 in 1 over hitting the ball poorly then it clicked and I felt in total control. Made 1 bad swing and 2 average wedges next 15 holes. Basically every shot outside 70 yards started on the exact line I wanted it to. Should have been way way way lower. Was 39 when I teed off and barely over 40 when I finished. I just added 10 yards to every shot for the cold and that seemed to work. Drives had 0 roll in rough and 5 yards max in the fairway. Was CPO but still got done in like 1 hour 45 minutes, taking my time and lining up everything. Was oddly focused. I had a bunch of good looks on the back and just couldn't drop the putts. The bogey free round still remains allusive, the bogey was on first hole so never had a sweat.
