Friday was alright as I shot my handicap through 9 holes.
Saturday was a long day. Played in a medal was over by the 6th as lost 2 balls off the tee I just couldn't be bothered. Had a good stretch of holes from about the 10th to the 16th but then ended poorly.
Then right after that lost 4&3 in a match. Had to give the guy 11 shots. I was playing poor and he was playing decent. Had a couple of good holes. Birdie one of them and he got a Par for the halve.
Sunday, Front 9 level Par back 9 +5 ... Mainly one blow up hole that caused me to get a triple.
Today, Went to one of my other locals and played terrible found every bunker possible. Think I was about +23 or something in the end. Not great. However, I thought lets try and get something out this round and tried to fix the hook shot. Little grip change and not saying I've fixed it but it's looking promising now. I had a 270 drive whilst playing there and probably 1 or 2 260's.
Then me and couple of mates decided to play 9 holes this evening at my local and it went really really good. Missed one green and even that was on the fringe on a 200 yard par 3. Had a 280 drive granted it was down wind this was on a par 5 and hit a rescue to pin high just off the green, Birdied that. Small par 3 hit it to about 4 feet knocked that in for birdie. 8th knocked in a long range putt for birdie. 9th good tee shot, Meh approach but was on the green and ended up 3 putting for -2 sadly. It's like night and day from earlier though.
Only got 9 in on men's night before the storms chased us off. Could have continued but didn't. 41, just 5 bogies. Hit the ball very nice, putted like an absolute arse.
45-41-86. No birdies, 3 double bogeys, 1 triple bogey. 70.3/133/6100
The difference between a decent round and meh is keeping the bad holes to bogeys. I had way too many others. And it wasn't just one thing, it was a mix of bad course management, bad luck, poor execution and general mental midgetry.
#5, long par 4. I can reach it, maybe, if I'm in the fairway. Requires a long carry to do it. Hit a poor drive, left into waste area. Draw a clean, flat lie. Can't go for the green, no angle and everything funnels into a deep, deep bunker. No problem hitting a hybrid down the fairway into perfect shape 50 yards short. Wedge is a little too strong, hits just past the hole and bounces like it hit concrete, leaving a nasty double breaking 40 footer for par from the back of the green. Predictable 3 putt after I blow the first one 8 feet past. Double.
#6, par 5. Stripe a drive right down the center. Hybrid for second to a perfect spot, 145 out, uphill. Pull 4 iron about six feet left of my intended line, bounces left off the green into a deep bunker. Get it out but not quite on, leaving an awkward stance. Chip to 4 feet, miss. Double.
#9, par 4. Pull drive, kicks dead left directly against a tree trunk. Take a drop in super thick rough. Chop it out to 155. 4 iron to front edge, 15 feet from pin. 2 putts. Double.
Things are going along better on the back, until ...
#16, very long par 4. I generally cannot reach it and there is a massive waste area/cross bunker so I usually lay up short of that. Good drive, pull hybrid just a hair which is fine for line but makes it go a bit farther ... about six inches too far. Through the fairway, not quite into the waste area but directly into a hole. ****. I should have taken an unplayable, but instead I gave it a go, dumped it in the sand and close to the face. Got it out but not close to the green, hit a lousy pitch to 20 feet and was lucky to 2 putt. Triple.
Not a good ball striking day at all. Made a putter change, went okay I guess.
Finished in hilarious fashion. The last hole is a long (400+ yard) par 4, the bane of my existence. Hit my worst tee shot of the day, a pop fly to right field deep into the junk and likely unfindable. Hit a provisional, was probably my best tee shot of the day. Could not find the first ball so I'm playing the provisional. Still had 210 left, uphill. Ball is sitting up, perfect lie. I know that my score is going to count for the team game. Pull out the driver anyway, hit it absolutely dead solid perfect. Ends up 2 feet from the cup. One putt later I have one of the better and more unlikely bogeys I've ever made.
45-41-86. No birdies, 3 double bogeys. 70.3/133/6100 yards
What a shame to waste a really good ball striking day. Made a small swing adjustment and it paid off in spades, got back to hitting it flush with better trajectory. But horrible short game play gave away shots left and right.
Of interest only to me, my fourth consecutive round of 86 at this course. Many different ways to accomplish the same lousy result.
