I went to club Champion and was fit for a putter. Going in I thought I'd like to check out a Cameron or TaylorMade, but I didn't even hit one of those and that is fine with me. I told him that I didn't care what I got and was going to go with his recommendation based on my swing.

It was between a Ping and some ugly putter with a red dot and black lower shaft. Can't recall the brand. I Couldn't stand the look and feel and ended up with the Ping Sigma 2 Tyne 4 Platinum and they're adding a sight line. I hit both equally well.

I was really happy with the experience. It turns out my 25 year old putter was something no one there had ever seen before.

I also hit a Vokey 54/10 and 56/12, but didn't buy anything. My current wedges are good enough and I'm going to be springing for a driver, 3 wood and maybe a hybrid. Not sure if I need the hybrid or not but my fitting is in a couple weeks at Miles Of Golf.

two weeks ago: Taylor Made rocketbladez irons. first new set of irons in 20+ years.

today: Maxfli honors stand bag. first new bag in 25 years. two dozen Maxfli tour balls. some socks. last week I bought a dozen Titleist velocity and a dozen Bridgestone E6 speed.

I have now bought 4 dozen golf balls before playing a round. In past years I'd run and grab a dozen Slazenger's or whatever the day I was teeing off.

gonna be 68F tomorrow here. I may get 9 in at the local yet to be opened course. I'm excited.

That's funny. I also bought 2 dozen Titleist Prov 1 today before even playing a round yet as well just because I read a comparison of the spin rate on different balls and it got me jacked up to try them. Last year I just used top flite xl. I'm also excited for the mid 60s tomorrow! Hit 'em straight

2 years ago I got a Trackman fitting for a Callaway driver and 3-wood up at Highlands Meadows in Windsor. I think he did a good job and didn't charge me much either. At the time I think the driver had a retail price of $500 and the 3 wood was $300 retail. It ended up costing me a little under $800 total including the fitting and after tax.

Pretty sure he has Miura, and TaylorMade stuff too. He definitely gets a huge discount on Callaway stuff, which is helpful if that's what you're interested in.

It's not the full array of clubs that you'd get at like club champion.

I really like the arm lock, just really hate the putter head of the Odyssey. Everything just feels dead off of it. I think I'm gonna pick up another Scotty Newport or just adjust my current one. I will need to add about 6" onto it and then get the different grip. The Odyssey is about 3" too short as it sits for it to be an arm lock.

When I was being fit for a putter this weekend I tried a putting mirror. It was pretty cool and it will help me and my wife so that should be fun, so I bought it today. I'm a little concerned that they were putting with a 3 or 4 iron in all these pictures though. Ha ha

you should be more concerned about what will eventually happen to your left elbow (especially when you're putting on the fairway with your 3 iron from 185 yards in a direction away from the green).

Getting an Arm-Lock AR2 putter grip. It adjusts the lie of the head by 2*. If need be im just gonna put an extension onto my Newport to get the correct length. The grip is 17" long.

First off, have you seen their driver fitting video? It's from 2012 and advertising the TM r11 driver! And they talk about clubhead speed, the most irrelevant number on the board. Ball speed is what matters. I could put you in a combination that increases clubhead speed but decreases ball speed because of shaft load.

When fitting irons, they merely seem to fit you to shafts that are offered by that particular club manufacturer. They send the specs to the manufacturer for them to build! Well, what if the shaft that works best for you isn't offered by the manufacturer of the club that works best for you? What if your perfect combination is Ping G700 irons with Oban oi83 shafts? Ping doesn't offer that shaft option, so you're screwed.

Hopefully they don't operate the same way with woods, slightly different animal. Ask if they offer the Accra FX 2.0 series or the Oban Devotion series with any driver. If not, I'd advise leaving. Because I'm pretty sure no club manufacturer offers that in their heads.

Just my two cents. Good luck whichever way you go.

Thanks for the two cents. I'm happy to hear opinions. I am actually getting the long game fitting this weekend at Carl's Golfland instead since they had a cancellation and can get me in a few weeks earlier than Miles could. I would like the new driver, 3W and hybrid (if necessary) before I play Arcadia Bluffs!

Do you or anyone else have an opinion about Carl's? The only other place would be Club Champion and although I was happy w/ the putter fitting, I would rather hit onto a range instead of use a simulator.

I don't know what you mean by this:

"Ask if they offer the Accra FX 2.0 series or the Oban Devotion series with any driver. If not, I'd advise leaving. Because I'm pretty sure no club manufacturer offers that in their heads."

I just got back into the game last year after a long hiatus and my clubs were 25 years old. All this fitting stuff was new to me but I've learned quite a lot since then. I never heard of Miles before a ranger told me about them and about fittings. I googled and they were recommended in Golf Digest and also someone here said they had a good reputation as well. That was enough for me to give it a shot, knowing nothing about fittings back in August of last year. It was probably going to be hard for me to not have a good experience I guess.

I was really happy w/ the iron fittings. I'm probably a 15 handicap these days and was a 20ish when I got fit. I am hoping to get that down to single digits again maybe by next year sometime. I hit every brand there was before the P790's called my name. The stock shaft wasn't perfect, but it was better than most I hit and the club felt really good.

After a few shaft changes it was long, straight and consistent. Like I say I'm not a scratch golfer, so I guess there could be a better shaft for me, but these clubs are amazing and I'm so happy with them. Very, very happy. Perhaps it can be tweaked, but I'll save that for sometime down the road when I'm more consistent w/ my swing.

Let me know what you think about Carl's.

I haven't been fit by either Carls or Miles but both have solid reputations, see for example the Michigan-focused subforums on GolfWRX. Since you're not going in as a complete noob I think you'll have a satisfactory experience and will certainly get a better result than just buying off the rack.

BO has his opinions and he's never wrong but they do tend to be a bit hyperbolic and the product of his own abilities and experiences.

OK, let's use the new Ping G410 driver as an example. And I've got 13 Ping clubs in the bag, so I'm not ragging on them, just using them as an example that all other club manufacturers follow.

Ping offers 6 shafts in the G410, Alta, Ping 65 Tour, Ping 75 Tour, Ping Distanza, True Temper Even Flow Black, and Tensei Orange. And that's great for most consumers who are content to buy off the rack. But there are tons of great driver shafts out there. Oban, Graphite Design, VA Composites, Yonex, Fujikura, Aerotech just to name a few.

A proper custom club fitter will have the ability and tools to fit you into aftermarket shafts and then build out those clubs. And Miles of Golf does not seem to do this with their irons anyway, that's why I'm curious to hear if they have that ability with their woods.

Their iron fitting seems to be no different than the experience you would get at any club manufacturers demo day using only stock offered shafts.

I have no experience with Carls. And I totally understand your desire to be fit outdoors where you can actually see ball flight. I feel the same.

I do think that Miles of Golf is better than just buying off the rack. But I do have an issue with any custom fitter that does not actually build their own clubs. And I have been a part of a conversation with one of their fitters, and it did not inspire confidence.

Having run an independent fitting studio that is part of Golf Digest's Top 100 fitters has really opened my eyes to this topic. And it's frustrating some of the things I have seen from fitters that put a black mark on the industry.

In the constant quoting my own posts.......

Grip came in today and was driving over to my club guy and got me to thinking. This grip is curved a bit to make it add 2* of loft. Me being a lefty the light bulb turned on during the drive that this would actually decrease the loft of my putter 2*. So I need to have the grip put on the opposite way, so the flat part will be facing down. Not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things.

Also have to extend the putter to 44". That will put it at just below the elbow.

Picking it up tomorrow.

I understand. Thanks for explaining. Is your studio in Michigan?

I'd never buy off the rack again after what I learned at the fitting and I would advise that nobody else ever does either.

I called Carl's and while I couldn't talk even 1/1000th as intelligently about it as you can, I used your example of the Ping G410 and asked if I was limited to the shafts that Ping recommends (and rattled off the examples you gave) or would I be able to be fit for something else, for example Accra FX 2.0 series or the Oban Devotion series with Ping G410 and he said I would be able to and they have that capability.

I will have to trust that they know what they're doing and that they are thinking outside of the manufacturer's box. I know literally nothing about the different shafts so I'm going to have to go w/ whatever they suggest.

All in all I'll be able to see and feel the performance so I should know if we found a combination that works for me. I am a perfectionist to a fault and would like to find the absolute perfect combo, but that could take too much time and maybe too much money for a marginal gain.

If you're leaving the manufacturer's box, don't forget to bring your wallet lol. You will notice the difference with the clubs but it can get very expensive.

Ha! That's probably why they stay within the box themselves-and why I'm likely to as well. $600 for a new driver is already awfully expensive.

Stock driver prices of the big four not including tax is $549,$529,$499,$499. Typically carbon composite heads are too spinny and those are the two most expensive.

Consider this alternative. Get the Ping G400 Max driver for $399, then you've got room for a much better shaft like the two I mentioned in the low $200's.

What difference will it make if you get a $549 head if the shaft to attach it to sucks for you?

You're right, the g400max driver is probably still the best driver on the market even though it's last years model. If you can find one for $399, definitely get that and upgrade the shaft. There's none left around here unfortunately, and being a lefty, even fewer ever existed.

That would be fine. I think they've still got some in their store. I'll ask him to build that for me and see how it goes.

I had a fitting with TaylorMade a few weeks ago. It was at demo days, so it wasn't that hands on and it was only TaylorMade. While he supposedly found the driver for me (M5), I'm still going to get a more thorough fitting. I was planning on bringing in the info below this weekend, but I think I shouldn't try to lead them in any direction. It was the first time I hit a ball all year. It was 43, rainy and cold so I think I can do better. He also thought I could go lower than 9°

Daily update. Picked it up and it feels like I am standing 5 feet away from the ball. I grabbed a ball to see where my eyes were compared to the putter face. I was a solid foot inside the line. I'm gonna have to have the lie bent upright quite a bit. Gonna try it as it is first and just have the heel in the air to start.
