What golf gear did you buy today? What golf gear did you buy today?

not exactly golf gear but i'l post it anyway as i think it may have helped me game.

i've always had trouble with my front ankle. "front" meaning for my golf swing...... my front leg is a bit longer than back leg and i suppinate like crazy - it means my foots rolls aggressively outwards when my lands. if my foot is wet and i walk over pavement, the middle of my foot only makes a wet imprint on the very outside whereas my other foot makes an entire footprint.

with that preamble out of the way, i bought two things last week: 1) an ankle brace ; 2) lateral wedges.

#1 anchors the ankle so it can't roll over as easily. works very well. and i'm guessing i can't get a much more rigid one in time if i want. this one does have plastic inserts that make it fairly rigid.

#2 is foam inserts you put under your orthotic or the insole that came with your shoe..... basically it's much higher on the outside. you are supposed to wear on both feet. i got 5 mm rise on outside. that's the largest you can get without a prescription and the sales person says she seldom sees more than 10mm rise.. oops, 5 mm = 0.2 inch i think. and 10mm obv. is double. i did the math in my head so might be off.

but i think they both make sense for strong pivots - the front one especially.

the results. i played very very wet vancouver yesterday and didn't hit one really bad shot the whole time. combo of things including swing improvement but i have to think the ankle brace and lateral wedges make a difference...

lastly US$50 for ankle brace - i will find name when i get it later.. US$15 for each of the lateral wedges - and as i said they sell them in pairs.

Hot take but I prefer walking off distances to a range finder

lol @ us amateurs who "need the accuracy of a laser". i know it feels cool to say and use, but a gps with front, middle, back and hazard distances is just a bit more useful for most.

I don't think anyone said they "need the accuracy", although it is nice to know more exact pin yardages. I just find them easier to use, don't like wearing a watch or busting out the phone, but maybe I'm just used to it. Never realized they were thought of as "cool" though, that's weird.

lol @ trying to make this into a 'cool' / 'amateurs thinking they need accuracy of a laser'-issue.

Range finders are easier to use, are not dependent on the course having been measured for your gps, doesn't require you to recharge your gadget every few rounds and gives you the distance to anything you see, not just the green and hazards. As a terrible player, I frequently find myself needing distances to/over stuff a gps would not have.

Only advantage a gps has over a range finder is on blind shots.

If you're not a complete hacker the accuracy of a rangefinder is huge. It really helps you nail down your club distances.

i'd say it helps hackers too. sometimes the yardages on par 3's can be way way off. some combo of pins, tee position - different box or location within box, or just basic info being wrong.

now that i think about it, i'm grunching so not sure the debate.

for someone looking to get some sort of distance assistance, what are the very basic options? i'd be happy with a few words on each..

I may be an amateur but I can hit my wedge 92 yards and I can hit it 90 yards pretty exactly. So when your GPS unit says the pin is 92, but it really is 89 I will likely be an extra 9 feet from the pin that I wouldn't be if I used my rangefinder. If your GPS tells me I'm 150 I will try to hit an easy 8i in there but if the distance is actually 147 I'd much rather try to hit a full 9i, especially if short is the better miss. Every time I've ever been with someone that has the GPS going I find it to be off by 2-5 yards on every hole. That is unacceptable for this amateur.

Laser range finder is the best thing golf wise ive ever bought and its not even close. Ive used both gps and laser and ill never use anything other than a laser. Im about a 5 handicap fwiw. Not sure why in the world it matters, seems like a total personal preference.

GPS just isn't accurate enough for golf, I compare my laser to friend's GPS all the time, it's ~10 yards off sometimes on front/back yard ages

We've had this discussion before. Why the f would you use GPS when you can laser the distance to anything within a yard? GPS is so inaccurate. Why guess when you can just shoot the actual number?

I bought my Bushnell used on eBay a few years ago for like $60 and I really see no advantage to the newer high tech models, but maybe that's just me. I've only tried a couple of the newer ones whenever a playing partner had one. Did the exact same thing as mine for what I would need.

Yea, I've had my Bushnell for a number of years too and I don't really see what any newer model could improve on.

I point it at something and its pinseeker-magic locks onto it and gives me the distance. I don't see how that could be improved upon.

If I could finance a Trackman like a car I would seriously consider it. I am in Vegas next week so I could always just win.

On that note I'm talking golf on a poker forum and the last 3 times I have been to Vegas I haven't even set foot in a poker room. That will change this week.

I used to only play ProV1 and last year I tried the Callaway SuperSoft and I just love the soft feel off the club. Never in a million years would've guessed I'd like that. Seems to play just fine and I am very picky about how the ball reacts on different shots. So far I haven't gone back. Anyone else try/like these? Am I delusional?

I have switched to the Taylormade TP5X. Not like it's going to save you money though, unless you call $3 a dozen saving money. I really do like it over the older version of the ProV1x. Hold into the wind better, has slightly lesser spin (which is what I needed) and is just a touch longer.

I caved and bought the spider tour putter, black dj version. Easily best feeling putter ive owned. Just so easy to start the ball on the line and has given me tons of confidence. Worth the money imo.

Welp, the bit of sun we've had hit that nerve, and despite three rounds in the past six months and barely getting out last summer, I got custom fit yesterday and have a new set of irons, two hybrids, and a five wood coming my way. Ping G's across the board, PW-6i, 4H, 5H. Graphite shafts for the first time; fitter clearly had a "break the graphite shaft stigma" speech prepared, but it doesn't really bother me at all. Weight is actually still 95g. I didn't plan on getting hybrids or a 5w, but he convinced me that what I was playing didn't make sense for bag composition and my game, and they all felt REALLY good (the 5W especially).

Had a really good lesson last week from an instructor who was pretty much responsible for me getting back into the game 13 years ago or so ago. I hadn't played more than a round or two a year for almost ten years, and playing like a hack when I used to play to a 6 wasn't fun. I really liked his communication style and ability to fix without overhauling, and he got me back in the saddle where I was shooting scores that made me happy. Anyway, I moved, and the three instructors I've had since then never really clicked. This time I decided it was worth the long drive for a lesson with the OG, and I'm really glad I did.

Long story short, I'm excited for the season.
