Changed my own grips for the first time ever this year - once all the needed equipment was in place it was surprisingly easy to do so. Took about an hour for the 10 clubs I had to re-grip (the rest had decent grips).

Got (probably a bit too) confident and ordered a super stroke 5.0 for my putter too and plan on changing that too - I have a Super Stroke 3.0 on it at the moment which I got from a golf store while on vacation a couple of years ago.

Thing is - the lady at the golf shop I bought it at put it on and after the next round I had to go back and complain because it was very wobbly. She apologized and said Ping-putters (I have an Anser) were very difficult to put new grips on because the shafts were kinda difficult.

She put on a new grip and it was better - not perfect though and I padded the bottom end of the grip a bit afterwards to stabilize it and it's worked well enough.

But that whole thing has left me wondering - is there anything else I should consider/do when it comes to changing a putter grip compared to other grips?

I had the pro at my club shorten my putter a few inches many years ago which I guess could add to the shaft being more difficult to fit a grip to.

I can't remember just how much I had it shortened - lengthwise it's perfect for me now, but I guess it might mean that the grip now goes down far enough so that the shaft starts narrowing down.

The pro who shortened it back then clearly got it right since the grip was perfect then, but I'm wondering if there is something I should consider when fitting a grip to a club that might have a narrower 'bottom' than top (especially considering the lady who put on the super stroke later clearly struggled to get it right and still didn't)? Is adding extra layers of tape to the bottom a thing and if so, is there a way of telling how much should be added?

I never heard our builders make a comment like this about Ping putters during the time I was in that business. Doesn’t make it untrue but it’s much more likely the person who put it on isn’t overly adept.

Like most things, regripping is a learned skill. And there are plenty of people out there who aren’t very good or just don’t take the time to do it right.

It always helps to have a vise to put the club into to make putting the grip on perfectly straight a breeze. If you slide it on straight the first time you don’t have to adjust or twist sections into place.

What kind of grip was on the putter before the wobbly change? Assuming that grip was stable.

Yes, I'm pretty sure she was not very skilled at it - while chatting with her at the time she did not even seem to play golf so when she asked me to return a few hours later for the club to be re-gripped I figured it would be done by someone else and only realized that she was the one who did the job when she said so after I returned to complain.

I do have a vice (and a rubber-thing to hold the club in it) and regripping the clubs I've done so far have been pretty easy. That's mainly why I'm asking as I don't see why she would have such difficulties if a putter-grip change is as easy as other clubs.

The grip at the time she changed it was a Fisher-grip and that was very stable. I actually didn't know golf grips could wobble until the first round with the putter she gripped for me - I just stuffed a peg into the grip to fix it at the time

Update on this after having changed the grip on my putter: I would've messed it up badly if this lady hadn't messed it up first to give me a warning

My putter is way smaller where the grip ends than at the top of the shaft - there is some serious tapering there.

It is not possible to just apply one layer of tape to the shaft and slide the grip on like with the rest of my clubs - had I done that, I'm sure I would've ended up with just as wobbly a grip as when she fitted it for me the first time.

After I got the grip off, I checked the shaft with a caliper and using that, I padded the bottom of it with enough tape to match the top (and a bit more in the middle too) before sliding the new grip on.

As a noob at putting grips on, it's not something I would've even considered, but some shafts clearly taper off a lot - as mentioned I have had my putter shortened a bit, which I'm sure added to the issue, but even without that I don't see how the size difference between the top and bottom of the grip of my putter wouldn't be an issue when changing grips.

Used to have full set mizuno mp30 2i-pw. Never really liked the 9 iron because its very upright, which caused me to develop a pretty reliable 130 yard shot that draws about 20 yards lol. 8 iron was coming along with normal flight. Then I was playing a tough long course in hilly central mass as a single late 2020. I caught a twosome on 16th tee. They offered playing through. Said no hurry for me. They insisted. Ok. Pull 8 iron for par 3. Diamond shaped green with pin in back left corner behind a mean set of bunkers and a section of false front. Being unfamiliar as I was with yardage, I quickly changed my mind, thinking 7 iron was needed to err long if I aimed at center of green. Well I launched that 7 iron with slight pull left. Flew the green and finished atop the hill that forms the green complex. Guy says too long... We had a quick laugh and I grabbed my bag. I forgot the 8 iron.

Sometime later I found a used 5 dollar Tommy armor(sp? Idk) 8 iron in the charity bin at local course. Good utility club because of the cavity back, but flies 130 max. 125 yard swing gives nice flight.

So I basically gave up on the 9 iron and now hit 8 iron 120 to 130, but I still carry the 9.

Was very inconsistent last season between 130 and 150, but I did get pretty good with creative 7 irons.

Been looking for a good 9/8 combo for a while. Was in a big pro shop poking around. Found a titleist 755(I think) 9 iron and a titleist APX(I think) 8 iron costing a total of 30 bucks.

I only had 25. So I asked the guy "will u hide these for me?" And he did.

Seems like they will be a decent fit but I have never hit a titleist iron. Just wedges and woods/driver.

The same glove has been attached to my bag forever, in perfect condition....I don't know why I never got into wearing a glove. I do two-glove with rain gloves when it's wet.

Thinking of officially becoming old and getting a cart bag. I have a Ping Hoofer, but clubs tend to get stuck in it on the cart, and I play with a cart 98% of the time. I can keep the Hoofer to be nice to the caddie when I play courses that have them.

I actually was at the range the other day and I felt the glove being a bit of a nuisance at the top of the swing in the sense I could feel the club slightly moving. I do wear a glove a size to small not sure if that would have anything to do with it. I took off the glove and felt a much better connection with the club. I must say though I am struggling a lot with my grip right now.

I don't really like going to the range and hitting off mat's, Just something about it throws me off, I can't really remember a time where I've actually struck the ball well.

I warmed up with my TM rocket bladez 7 iron. Max carry just over 160 yards. Tried a Ping. Meh. Tried a Mizuno. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. On 3rd shot the fitter said "OMG look at this." 187 carry. I hit a bunch more and for 14 shots I averaged:

176.4 yards carry
89.2 MPH club head speed
123.4 MPH ball speed
-10.4 club path.............this sucks, I know
1.38 smash factor........no idea about this
5819 spin rate
18.2 launch angle
49.1 land angle
-2.2 attack angle

Bought Mizuno JPX 921 hot metal, 4-PW, stiff shaft NS pro modus 105.....whatever that all means

I just booked myself in for a fitting on Wednesday for Woods, Irons and Putter. Overdue for a upgrade but it's going to be interesting to see what numbers I get at the very least. I've only ever been to a fitting once at it was a very brief one it was a good 10+ years ago now so was without any tracking. Fitter literally told me to work on my swing

I’m interested to hear how it goes; definitely going to be some equipment improvement in that timeframe, especially with woods. I mentioned this above, but I got fitted expecting to get new everything, and there actually wasn’t enough change in irons to justify the cost. My irons are six years old.

So went and got fitted today, Not ideal I couldn't sleep properly the night before but felt alright.

I come out with

Stealth + Driver at 9.25 (I think he said this)
Titleist Hybrids x 2
Stealth Irons (So easy to hit it actually feels like cheating)
Odessey Putter

In in a stiff light shafts not sure on the specs of them,

Decided against a 3 wood at this point in time as I couldn't hit one consistently, It's my least confident club.

With my original driver I hit a few that had some 1200 spin I don't get it though they go so high for me. I tried the G425 instantly didn't like it which is weird I've only heard good things about it. I hit a Srixon Driver that was alright but spin numbers were jumping around the place. Stealth+ was a bit more consistent with Spin numbers we hit a window of about 2400-2700

With the Irons, I tried the P790's very good iron if Stealth didn't exist I would of gone into these. I tried T300's not a iron I liked and a Cobra Iron can't remember what it was, It was good but just couldn't beat the stealth.

The putter fitting wasn't really a fitting, It was more like what do you like. Thankfully I found this Odessey Putter fairly quickly felt with this allowed me to have less of a arch

What didn't you like about the G425? That's what I have now based entirely off Trackman numbers. I do think you need to be close to perfect to get a good feel from the ball at impact, but I guess the upside to that is often it will "feel" like I didn't hit it pure, but still goes a long way.

I HATED the feel of the Stealth. Or rather, lack of feel....feels like you didn't hit anything. Some might like it, I just didn't. Even if the numbers were good (which they weren't....it was fourth in line for me), I'm not sure I could have pulled the trigger on it.

Officially old: bought the Ping Pioneer cart bag. Already love it, the Hoofer was just too inconvenient for the cart.

I didn't realize the kind of deals my club gives (I wonder if they do). I wandered into Golf Galaxy while my wife was at IKEA, and the Pioneer was $75 more than what I paid at my club.

I'm normally a easy going guy when it comes to looks, But I didn't really like the look of the G425 as well the feel and sound of it when hit. I think I hit it all over the face and I have a tendency to hit it a bit out of the heel with my woods, This is when we moved to the Stealth Plus. I do agree with you it does sound a bit dull but I liked the look of it, We moved the weight to counter the heel strikes and it just worked well. I don't think I saw massive gains over what I currently game, But honestly I wasn't swinging with much confidence by the time we got to the driver. As we just hit 3 wood before hand and I was so bad, So I think more can be gained once I'm comfortable with my swing and the driver itself.

I did hit the Srixon ZX7 and this was a good driver for me, The shape and feel of it was so good, but I think we both agreed having a moveable weight would be better long term.

I more happy with the irons and the putter tbh, I'm going to have a putter that is 34inches. For some reason my old club pro cut my putter down to 31 inches and sometimes it a f'ing struggle to get it out of the bag

I just got a Ping G425Max from Utry which I so far have not had a chance to hit as the weather has not been cooperating. But I plan to get out there with it this weekend. I do like the looks personally, but that's all a matter of taste of course. I've read other reviews that also complain about the sound so we'll see. Although I remember by old square Nike Sasquatch driver - nothing could possibly be louder lol. Sounded like I was banging a metal pipe with an aluminum bat.

I know it the G425 Max supposed to be a super forgiving driver, so that is why I wanted to try it out. It would have to be a big improvement over my old Diablo Edge for me to buy it though... the cost of these new drivers is through the roof!

I upgraded from a G30 to the G425 and the results are crazy. I hit it 10-20 yards longer on average, and dispersion is way better. My bad shots go as far as my old driver, and not as wild.

Yeah the main thing I've been hearing from the G425 is that it isn't for everyone. However It's just a really good driver.

I really had no idea what I was going to come out with today and honestly can say the Stealth was probably low down on the list. I would of probably said G425 was high on the list. Just shows you need to try and get fitted if possible or at least try them. I have a friend who has spent so much money on 2nd hand golf clubs which are like a year old when he could just save up and get a fitting.

I used to have a G10 driver literally the nicest driver I've owned. I don't know how I came to own it but it was 12 Degree so wasn't right for me. I sold it to a 28 handicapper and honestly he hits it really good, He struggles to get the ball launching so the 12 degree's helps a lot.

Sold a wedge head, driver shaft, and now have an old putter listed in order to buy:

Golf gloves - received
Golf balls - on the way

Also need to purchase a second pair of shoes since the wet season is quickly approaching. Not sure I can get them worn in before Bandon or not. I do have another pair that I can use as #2 (non-waterproof though). On second thought I probably need to go get a pair ASAP.

Been looking around for the ever elusive driver shaft. Probably will demo Ventus Black and Tour AD XC to see how they compare with the gamer. Also gonna look into dropping down to a 60g shaft. With the swing speed going down it's probably a good idea.

Edit: Vice now has buy 5 get 1 free going on.
