Generally I use the 54 for chipping and the 58 for pitching and the 60 for sand shots, and the bunkers I hit out of have some hard sand.

I use the Kirkland balls from Costco on the cheap.

You think that guy lost his club? Seems like the course should have rang him up already if that was the case.
Bolded is unnecessary particularly if you have a huge gap at the top end of your long game. 58 and 60 is overkill even if they have different bounces, etc.

Could you elaborate how a big gap between 4 iron and 3 wood relates to the wedges?

I may have incorrectly assumed you needed to drop a club if you add a hybrid or whatever to maintain 14 clubs. Sorry if so

Oh I see. I actually have 13, and something to go between the 3-wood and 4-iron would put it at 14.

But as soon as I started hitting my driver and 3-wood better, my irons started to decline, so for the moment I'm no longer interested in filling the gap, but just in getting the irons and woods both working well at the same time, which always has been difficult. It's usually one or the other. Its like, "oh my game is coming together... or not." I use to be able to use 4-iron off the tee with good distance, but now all my irons are crap at the moment.

14 - i'm interested in the gap between your PW (likely around 45*) and the 54*. i kind of agree that carrying both a 58 and 60 for us common folk is really a bit redundant since they will rarely be used on full shots and with the right bounce can each do similar things around the greens. how often are you hitting full wedge shots?
as an example, i carry a PW, 50*, 54*, and 58* which cover roughly a 12 yard gap between clubs on full shots. it's fairly easy to open up the 58* to hit a flop, or use the 54* or 58* out of greenside sand depending on the length of shot.

The gap between my pitching wedge and 54 is probably around 30 yards. For some reason I have lost like 10 yards on my 54 in recent times with no idea why, but have likely gained some with the pitching wedge.

I'll hit full wedges a few times a round I guess, but it's pretty variable. Truth is I basically have been using the 60 almost exclusively from the sand, but for most shots I use the 54 or 58. The reason I got the 60 was because I thought the lower bounce on it would help for a flop type shot. This belief was inspired by a beer-influenced session of hitting flop shots rather successfully with the 54 rather than the 58, which I thought was odd since it has less loft, but later I read that flop shots were better with a lower bounce, which the 54 definitely had over the 58. I figured I might want to add a little loft as well and thus I got the 60 with 6 degrees of bounce. The truth is though that I don't like how the 60 is a bit heavier in the head than the other wedges, but I was in a hurry to just buy something after the salesperson gave me an earful about not hitting flop shots and trying out a special beginner's wedge.

When I got my Taylormade p790's, I wanted a gap wedge, which would be around 50 degrees, but the set simply doesn't come with one. My old Rocketballz iron set did have a gap wedge, which I liked quite a bit.

So I have a driver I bought about 11 years ago when I first started playing (Callaway Diablo Edge). I like it, it's very forgiving and easy to launch. However I wonder since it's over a decade old if I am potentially losing distance. Do the new drivers really add a lot of yardage or is it mostly marketing hype? FWIW I drive the Diablo about 250, wouldn't mind having some more short irons into the green.

Yes, the new drivers add significant distance for 95%+ of golfers. Not universal, but it's a rarity that you wouldn't gain yards with a new one that is properly fitted for you.

Plus you say they one you have now is forgiving. The newer ones are even more.

Magic words right here. More distance is on the table for almost anyone playing an off-the-rack driver.

My Newport has been put in timeout. Picked up a Ping Vault Bergen mallet putter for cheap. Will be in the bag just long enough to teach the Newport a lesson.

i like the titleist velocity balls a lot. my irons are flying straighter than ever. with 7 through 4 irons i can pretty much just play it dead straight. with 3 and 2 irons i have to allow for a little cut in order to get consistent contact. i can still work it either way if necessary, but i get much better consistent contact if im focusing on trying to hit it straight so thats what ive been doing with good results.

driver with the velocity balls is more consistent and a recent swing change has added more distance to the driver(im trying out a fast backswing with really good results).

velocity balls fly far and roll a bit more when i hit the green which is likely due to the reduced spin, which has actually made club selection more difficult with the rising temperatures. im getting to the back fringe much more often.

will report back on greenside spin control with titlest velocity balls once i actually get the hang of these "wedge" things. lol actually im getting better with my used titleist dsv 58 degree wedge(7 degrees bounce is nice imo) inside 80 yards. margin of error is slowly improving here, and for me at this moment a little less spin probably isnt hurting my score much.

my chipping style works nicely with the velocity actually. i only play chip shots wtih a wedge if i absolutely have to(usually out of greenside rough, as it happens). otherwise im playing a six or seven iron with a vertical putting stroke. longer shots i use 5 iron, shorter on occasion i use 8 iron if i really need to stop it fast. and thats all only if putting isn't an option. the low spin ball when coupled with the putting with loft style of chipping (ty ray floyd), which makes the ball come off the club with very little spin to begin with, actually makes distance control much easier for me than with a wedge.

Was fit for and purchased Mizuno MP20 HMB 3-PW & 3 P20 wedges with project x10 steel shafts. 6-8 week lead time so the Ping I210s will be games for a few more weeks.

Hopefully you’re close to a scratch with those two iron choices not to mention long enough to carry a 3 iron.

Where did you get fitted?

Far from a long ball hitter. More of a course management guy (fairways & greens.) Played golf in college back in the late 90s and just looking for some something new. Low HC was down to a 6.5 and has crept up to a 9.6.

Was fortunate enough to schedule (2) 1 hour fittings off grass in the Chicagoland area with the Mizuno rep who has been fitting Mizuno clubs for the past 8 years.

I didn’t technically purchase anything but did have a virtual Titleist ball fitting this afternoon. Spoke with a rep via video chat and he recommended a few balls for me. They are mailing me out some samples to try and going to notify me when an on sight fitting in my area is available.

Bought a cheap Orlimar knockoff of the TM Spider, after today's abysmal performance I decided to go with a mallet for a while. If it looks promising I'll probably invest in something better.

I went in to look at wedges, was curious if I could find a 56 or 58 Cleveland CBX to match up with a gap wedge, they had a barrel of them earlier in the spring but no luck. No surprise, those have to have been discontinued by 2019. Didn't pull the trigger on a CBX2, figured I'd look a little online first -- LOL'd when I did. 2nd Swing wants $110 for a used CBX (didn't even look to see if shipping was included) -- the shop was selling brand new CBX2s for $130. I think I paid $50 for the gap wedge, it was a demo and basically new.

In short, lol used wedges.

Does anyone use a shot tracking system? If so what do you use and what do you think of it. Considering it myself. Arccos and Shotscope come to mind but not sure if there are any decent other ones I should consider. I want it to be almost automatic with the least amount of interaction whilst on the course.

I understand also some new clubs like cobra come pre installed, wondering if I get these in the grip and regripped can I reuse them in the new grip?

I use Golf Metric app which gives strokes gained data vs either scratch or tour data

Oh is not automatic

I managed to pick up Shotscope V3 at a discount so will give it a try.

From what I can tell it's exactly what I want but obv will need to test it out.

Went into a smaller shop yesterday and boom, they had a number of brand new CBXs, so I bought a 56. It was even on sale.

Also picked up an Oakley flexfit hat and got my wedges re-gripped. Bring on the weekend.
