tried out the volvik XT yesterday. strange ball. takes some getting used to around the greens. chipping it was very weird...the cover really grips the grass and the thing just stops dead. every putt and chip i left wayyy short, especially ones from the fringe. switched back to the prov1 mid round but after i get more short game practice i'll probably go back to the volvik.

When it's slow, I hit balls and try different clubs - we have a TaylorMade bay, a Ping, bay, and Titleist bay, and a Callaway bay.

I have a full set of M2's from a couple years ago. Both irons and woods. Also use the 4 and 5 hybrid.

So here's my brief reviews of the clubs I've hit.

Drivers:

So far, I absolutely love the Ping G400 LST (low spin) driver best. It just feels so solid. Great club. The regular G400 and the G400 Max are also great clubs.

The Rouge is right there, too. Very easy-hitting club.

The M3/M4 with Twist Face tech is....good. I just don't feel it's any different from my M2.

Irons:

The M3/M4 - apparently, they are having some issues with this club, but they hit great.

Callaway Epic - very good clubs, but they are fat looking when you're at address...I don't like that.

Callaway Epic Star is amazing to hit...so light and easy to hit, but I'd have to try them on a real course...they can't be this easy to hit. I was hitting a 7-iron 210- yards. Obviously, they are lofted differently, but still.

Callaway Rogue - good clubs....the Pro version is something I'd consider playing.

But the irons I've fallen in love with....wow. the Callaway Apex CF 16.

Man, do I love these clubs. They've somehow gotten their Face Cup tech into a forged iron. So damn good. I've also tried the Pro version, but they're just a tad tougher to hit - but would great for low-handicappers, as you can work these like a true forged club. I'm around an 8 these days, so the regular Apex is perfect for me.

I'm going to have to win a poker tournament soon so I can buy these Apex clubs. Love 'em.

I also really loved the Rogue hybrids...easiest hybrids I've ever hit.

the Ping LST is sick. You can get a lower lofted one, too. 9 degrees.

Good thing I had some spares laying around. After shipping I cleared around $500. That should get me through July.

Bought the wife a starter set. Also stepped on the scale yesterday and decided that my fat ass needs to walk a bit more. Went out and bought a Clicgear 3.5+. Going to start walking 9 holes in the morning before work.

AP3 718 irons. Said -no- a couple of times cuz dont really think they will help me any, but friend was shopping them for cheap as got hold of a couple of sets. Hope I get some joy out of them!

i actually ended up checking out the g700's a bit back and picked them up. had them around a month and love them. their black dot standards always fit me very well.

have had the g400 4h & 5h for a couple months now and love those also. got them just before vegas in april and have a couple of memories etched in the bottom of the 5h.

Titleist 818H 21* hybrid. I figure if I don't like it I can get a decent chunk of my money back, and I get to use up some shop credit.

Borrowed an old 910H and hit it well, so I might pick one up off the bay soon.

brought out my old 900 series cleveland wedges for a round and it made me realize how much i don't like my newer taylormade wedges... but the 900s don't have a whole lot of groove left. 588s have never looked right to me and i don't really like vokey either... what should i be looking at? callaway?

Picked up a used Ping Rapture v2 driver today to mess around with. It's actually an older model than the ~ six year old Ping i20 I currently use. Came with an Aldila VooDoo shaft, supposedly +1".

Apparently that extra inch was just an extender, cause it gave on the third shot I hit with it. Not a big deal since I was likely to regrip it anyway.

Started thinking about getting some new wedges too, could be an expensive season.

Used Titleist 910H 19* hybrid. First purchase from Callaway Preowned (via eBay in this case), pretty impressed. Club in very nice condition. Only got a chance to hit it once tonight, it produced a decent result.

Okay, the buying stuff to mess around with is getting out of control.

Ebay has a 20% off coupon today (good for another 1h15m), so I picked up a Titleist 915D2 driver. Price was good enough that I should have little difficulty recovering most of my investment if I don't like it.

My reshafted 3 iron also arrived today, though its place in the bag is in serious jeopardy.

Looking to buy a new driver, I’m an 18 handicap but have recently started playing 2+ times / week so looking to improve. Looking to spend around 250 GBP. Thoughts on merits of getting a custom fitting (i.e. Callaway XR) vs ordering online a better model 2nd hand (eBay) i.e. Ping g400? I’m 5ft’11 right handed with my bad shot off tee being a hook.

lol, yeah the thing about the sim golf, especially inside 100, i'm super dialed in on my distances. need real numbers outside so i can take that same confident swing.
