What ball should I play? What ball should I play?

01-16-2018 , 05:59 PM
Before I moved to Florida I played a lot of golf. In fact I played more real rounds the summer before I moved than I have played in the 14 years I have been here. I now have the time and desire to get good again. 14 years ago I played a Titleist DT 100 or Pinnacle Gold (because of manufacturing reasons) balls.

I wonder if there are any old timers on here that played the original DT 100's that have transitioned to the new age balls. If so - any recommendations.

I remember the DT 100s, bloody rocks. The balls have come along way in the last 14 years, you pretty much cant go wrong. Jut pick a brand of a decemt manufactot. Srixon are my favourite "cheap" ball. If yiuare loaded just buy Provx's.

I went to the PGA Superstore here and had a swing analysis. The Pro gave me some ball recommendations. But since I am just getting restarted - and I have a Titleist bag - I went with the Pro V1. I am not ready to take on the extra spin of the Pro V1x.

Thanks for the advice

Haha - most balls were rocks then compared to now. I don't remember the exact name but the first REAL soft ball I played was the Maxfli ball. Even when I was good it spun too much for me. I didn't need the distance - so I went back to the "rock"!!

The Pro V1X spins less than the Pro V1 and is "harder".

Everything old and before the prov and the nike solid that first came out spun tons more than golf balls do now. You actually had to worry about spinning the ball back 50 feet with a wedge and you could slice it 70 yards. Now the only 70 yard misses are giant double crosses that get pushed or pulled then start curving more.

Greg Norman used to miss a ton of green with wedges by spinning them back off when he played these bad boys

Oh yea. Even a aggressive wedge would send them into the shag bag.

Yea, I started playing in the late 80's when I was in Junior High. Mostly played balatas when I found them on the course at that point. They were stupidly delicate. By the time I was a decent player and could afford to buy premium balls they were long gone.

Years ago I remember finding one in a water hole and it had a big slice in it. Anyway, I put it in a vice and cut it open with a hacksaw just to see how it was constructed. Water must have gotten in the ball, because I barely got through the cover and snaky looking, wet elastic-rubber stuff started oozing out of the cut. It looked thing something out of an alien movie...lol

i play pretty regularly with a life long golfer who's pushing 65 and still plays to a ~7 HC. he has a beautiful move and frequently uses a driving iron off the tee. if he does pull a driver his average drive is probably ~270 or so. he also often plays with hickory clubs with a few other friends and has the swing tempo to pull it off.

his ball of choice for every round, summer or winter, steel or wood shaft, is the Noodle.

I remember the old lady precept being a very nice ball to hit. Don't think they're around anymore.

funny you say that, but Chewie also plays ladies balls from time to time instead of the Noodle.

The Precept MC Tour Premium (with seamless cover technology) was my favorite ball of all time (circa 1999). Then, it magically disappeared. I switched to Bridgestones for the seamlessness and have longed for the Precept days.

I just got sad.

For whatever reason, they flipped this in last year's model. The ProV1 spins less than the ProV1x on long shots now...

http://www.golf.com/equipment/2017/0...017-first-look

"The Titleist Pro V1 has a new core formulation that maintains compression (with similar feel as before) while producing faster ball speeds and less spin on full shots. Company officials say there's significantly more distance than in the previous model, and it's on par with the Pro V1x. Shots spin less off the driver through mid-irons, while spin and short-game performance (8-iron through wedges) remain largely the same as in the '15 model. (The new Pro V1 spins less throughout the bag than the Pro V1x, whereas the 2015 Pro V1 spun more on long shots.)"

edit: I swapped to the ProV1 and did the 3 for 1 deal this year on them after playing the ProV1x since it came out. I definitely like the flight of the new one a ton of my driver.

I wonder how you can tell the actual year of production when buying them at a store or golf shop. I would think the PGA Superstore would know but would the others?

I never play anything but these now. Not only do they play amazing, but it's always easy to know which ball is yours. Plus when you hit a wedge shot you can actually see the ball spinning, which is cool is hell. I love them.
