I will continue to post back on my progress.
So I'm great from 3 feet and 5 feet now...Shot 93 on Saturday. I still had 4 3 putts last weekend (one was lost focus and I missed the 5 footer). Lag putting can still improve more. My pitching and chipping helped me out this weekend. I think I drained at least 9 3 footers and 3 5 footers. Great confidence builder. Managed to post low score on the front nine and win some money off my buddies. Even had a birdie for good measure.

Going to keep working at this. Could easily have broken 90, so the motivation is there.

Start now. If you can master the putting and then the chipping the rest will come easy because you'll be fearless around the green. You'll know that if you miss the green you can get up and down. Good luck and welcome to this crazy game

thanks. super pumped about golf as I'm living on a course now and was glued to tv for us open. seems I started following just at the right time. re practice, have done 16 in a row and then the pressure is just too much. and that is just me putting and no one around/money on the line.

I have a rather old putter, should I invest in a brand new one?

Try a bunch of different ones if you can or at least get one that has the ball directly under your eyes when using your natural putting stroke

Very detailed routine i will be putting this into my practice, lag putting caught my eye for sure because this is where most people struggle with there game and end up 3-4 putting. However, i feel that you must incorporate chipping and pitching with putting into this routine. So hit a bunch of chips and pitch's varying different lies from short/longer distances and putt them out. Instead of just saying "Oh its in gimmie range and pick it up". I can't stress enough that when your practicing there has to be some importance involved, which is why this routine is very good for people who want to improve there game. Great read!

To reply from my last post i am a +1 handicap golfer. The putting part took me over an hour and a half to complete. All the other drills i flew threw my first attempt. Guess i know what i need to work on.

My best handicap was 7 and my best score was 74( 4 over) not played much for a few years but would love to get back into it again, think i need some practice drills that are fun because i hate just hitting balls on the range

I need some drills to teach me how to consistently take proper divots with my irons, as I often hit them too thin. Any reliable recommendations?

Brutal practice routine. I still cannot get past the first challenge, although I do feel more confident in my putting already. Highest I've gotten so far is 18.

I've been going to putting greens on two different courses and practicing this by removing the flag from one of the holes and taking 4 putts at-a-time from different angles to the hole, so it's not the exact same putt for all 25 attempts.

It always seems somewhere around 12-16 I get over confident or something and jar on off the lip.

Great to so others undertake this routine

It is very frustrating at times but worth it

I'm now down to single figures (9), started doing routine when off 13

and still only only hit 3 or so greens in reg.

Cheers Steve & thanks Rob

Going to give this routine a try once a week throughout the winter months. Looks like a real challenge but it's certainly a great way to sharpen up the short game which is where I need work. Currently a 21 handicap hoping to improve on that by spring 2016. If anyone else is giving this a go through winter I'd be interested in hearing how you are getting on.

It's great here that someone has had immediate success using this programme. I hope I have the same result as you

If you are constantly hitting thin, you might try getting your clubs fit and have the hosel angle adjusted to your swing.

Over the course today and my 1st attempt at this routine. Results were:

25 x 3 foot putts 10 minutes
20 x 20 foot putts to 3 foot circle 20 minutes
20 x 30 foot putts to 3 foot circle 1 hour 15 minutes (incomplete)

Just couldn't get a consistent run of putts to stay within 3 feet from 30 foot. That being said this is the first time in 3 years of playing that I have putted for that length of time. My normal putting practice is 5 to 10 minutes before I play a round. Which was never goner be enough.

I'm playing the London club tomorrow which is a top 10 course in my county. Played there back in March and had a terrible round of 107 with 44 putts! I'm hoping the little bit of work I've put in today pays off. Hope others are seeing great results using this routine

Having a baby seriously dented my time to practice but I have an indoor putting simulator and nailed the 3 and 5 Foot putts often.

Managed to get past the lag putting stage of the program once. Maybe 8 attempts all season. Lag putting is the bane of my golf existence.

I found that on the course I often had 33-50 Foot putts. So this is what I need to keep working on. I'd end up with 7-12 foot putts for par or bogey.

I did find that sinking 5 Footers early in a round gave me confidence for the 7 footers.

Ended the year with new irons, driver and hybrids. Now that I hit them all well, I can focus on the short game again. I did end the year winning a skins game against my two brother in laws who shot low-mid 80's. I was sinking everything inside 9 Feet to win or push a skin to another hole.

This routine isn't easy. Isn't fun, lol...but it does work.

Looking forward to this season. Stuck in a winter wonderland but can sink the 3 and 5 footers blindfolded now thanks to the indoor simulator. Super confident I'll lower my scores this year too.

Really interesting thread. I only read first few pages but will read more later. I was once a 100 - 110 player for long time but was given a year of free golf at a nice course with great practice facility and just went addicto with the game. I got down to the mid 80s after 6 months and at nine months broke 80 for the first time. I got injured and have had a huge interruption to my game but hope to get back out there. Wont have a free course to play but I really love being on the range and practice greens for hours upon hours.

Was never much of a golfer to start with (usually shot 88 -100) and then took 10 years off. last summer I started playing again and played quite a bit. I got stuck in the 85 - 95 range. I spent a lot of time at the driving range and some at the putt/chip greens but had no focus and didn't really improve.

Near the end of the summer I found this thread and tried the practice routine. I did pretty well on the short putting and the first 2 lag putts. I never completed the 40 foot lag puts, that was just too hard for me. Skipped ahead to the chipping and short pitches. Didn't really have the proper facility to go any longer on pitches and then ran out of summer.

With this routine I finally started seeing a lot of improvement and my last 3 rounds of the summer were 80, 83, 79. My first round in the 70s ever. I definitely credit this routine as the difference, as my short game was much better and is definitely where I saved shots to improve my score.

I'm looking forward to this season when i will start using this routine from the beginning. Hoping for a few more rounds in the 70s!

copied and sent to my wife ( 7 hdcp ). today was day 1 of investing time into this practice routine.

briefly. i was a 13 four years ago. took weeks of lessons. hit thousands of balls. played hundreds of rounds now i'm a 10. progress, but not to the degree i was hoping for.

devoted two hours this afternoon to the routine. putting and chipping, check. wow my pitching sucks ball-striking, check.

the goal; get my cap under 7. i think this practice routine will be the ticket.

I'm finally going to give this routine a go in the next few days...will report back.

I leave way too many strokes out there...especially on the green.

Okay, my first attempt at this did not go well.

First of all, I tried it at the Taylormade Expierence on LVB in Vegas. Not a good idea. The putting green is awful. There's not a flat spot to be found anywhere. And it's all bumpy.

But I tried it anyway. Took my a freakin' hour to get 25 3-putts in. The 20 ft. Lags were okay, I did it on the first try. 30 foot lags took me half an hour. 45 foot lags were impossible because of the shape and contour of the green...but I tried to do it anyway. Finally quit after making ten in a row.

By that time, my back was on fire, so I didn't even do the chips or pitches.

I will try this again soon, but on a real putting green.

I hate to admit this but I'm a new player and I've tried to do this drill three days now to no avail. The most putts I've made consecutively was 15, and my chipping around the green was just terrible ;( I really need to work on all facets of the game.

four days in, significant changes;

a) much more determined to start the putter back-swing with my right shoulder, rather than my hands. ( i already begin my swing with all other clubs w my right shoulder...stubbornly resisted doing that with my putter. no more. )

b) more fully understand that consistent putting tempo, especially at the transition, is crucial to consistently positive results.

( made every putt today under 10 ft. can't remember the last time that happened. )

C) weakened my right hand grip. I use a neutral left hand, but had allowed my right hand to slip into a stronger position. lost that snappy feel with wedges and irons at contact. the pitching drills have re-enforced the importance of keeping the left thumb snug in the pocket of my right palm. the improved grip added some yards to all my short irons today...which allowed me the chance to work on my lag putts and chipping

D) the focus on ball control through all the drills in this routine has greatly improved my tempo, especially at transition, perhaps the most significant improvement of all. slowing my swing, i've gained quite a bit of confidence over full-swing shots.

my best round ever is a 70. several years ago off the forward tees. i feel like this practice routine will help me beat that round this summer.

Tried it again today at a better facility.

3-foot putts took me 30 minutes.

20-foot putts took me one try.

30-foot putts took me 4 tries.

45 foot putts were tough! I finally quit when I made 18 of 20.

What surprised me was how difficult the chipping was. It took me a good half hour to get 8/10. I'm really going to work on that.

Bunker was fairly easy...got 10/10 on my 2nd try. Never did get 6/10 within a flagstick-length, tho.

Didn't have time to do the pitching because I played 9 holes instead!
