Coming back to this as I haven't read this thread in about a week.
Maybe I am oversimplifying it, but shouldn't birdie % be the only stat to dictate the proper club selection off the tee in that situation, given that it's irrelevant whether you make par or bogey + if you're not making birdie.
You need birdie to force a playoff, thus club yielding highest birdie % is the best choice I would think...
