Simple. Use a hybrid. Unless you consistently shoot below 80, a 5-iron should be the longest club in your bag.

But you do need to sweep a long iron (or any longer) club much more so than you do a wedge. The longer the club, the more shallow the angle of attack. Pinch the wedges, sweep the woods.

what do you think of the old r7 taylormade irons? im torn btw that and the burners. i kind of like how the r7's have a more traditional look and are a few hundred dollars cheaper. but the forgiveness and length of the burners is supposed to be unreal.

do you have any other "rules" you suggest to follow like this? conditions that you think inexperienced players are better suited to follow before stepping up and using harder-to-hit clubs?

for a beginner/amateur what collection of wedges do you suggest?

what's in the bag for a beginner, intermediate and advanced player?

BO, I am a 13 handicap and decided to get serious about golf again starting next spring (played alot till I was 16, 20 now). My biggest issue is inconsistency.

I am rearranging my bag and buying some new clubs, and right now, this is how I want to set it up:

Driver- 270
3W - 235
5W - 220
3H - 210
4H - 200
5i - 185
6i - 170
7i - 160
8i - 150
9i - 140
PW - 125
52* - 105
56* - 85

Solid set-up? Anything you would change?

I know you're not asking me, but I'll give my 2 cents anyway.

I have a 3H and a 5W. For me there is not a 10 yard gap between these 2 clubs. If I were you I'd drop one of these depending on which you feel more consistent with and add a 60* wedge. Obviously this could change if you are able to hit a lot of different shots with your wedges, are very confident in your yardages with the 3H and the 5W and feel it's important for you to have a tool for 210 as well as 220. This just isn't the case for me.

Looks fine. Most golfers have no need for a 60* wedge anyway. 56* will do you just fine.

Thanks for the thoughts. I considered a 60* wedge, but as you said, there really is no need. If I can get myself down to a 7 or so handicap this year, I will probably pick one up then, but for now, I don't see it being worth it.

depends on where you play, imo. Big flat courses, you hardly never need more than 53 (except for full swings from 85 yards). On tight courses with elevated fast greens, you almost always need something more than 56.

Disagree because my reasoning is different that yours.

My statement was based on the fact that most golfers don't have the talent to make use of a 60* wedge. The added loft simply causes more problems.

I remember using a 56* wedge in college (before 60* were widespread) and having no issues at all on courses that were brutal.

I've never had a wedge with more than 57* loft in my bag for more than a day.
There are many 60* wedges on tour that are bent to 57* or 58*.
Not all by any stretch, but many.

If I had to play tour conditioned courses every day (firm, fast, tight pins), I might consider getting used to more loft, but as it is I never feel the need.

I completely agree with this. I do not have enough time to devote to just a 60* wedge to make it a useful club at this point. If I can get down to a 6-7 handicap, I will probably take the plunge, because it might be the difference in a shot or 2 a round.

The first question I asked BO, was how to hit a 60*. I got stubborn and kept it in the bag but stopped using it where I could use a 56* with a similar result. I do use it for greenside bunkers with a close pin and an 6' wall...(Oak Quarry)...but when I pull it from my bag in any other circumstance my golf buddy grins like a hyena. It's overly specialized/difficult for the level of my game.

Really? IMO, it is exactly the same as hitting a 53, it just goes a shorter distance. I am a 4 or a 5 though, not a 15 or a 20. And there is obviously a difference. I do think that watching a 20 handicap try and hit a 60 degree wedge when they could easily just bump one up there 10 feet from the hole is cringe worthy.

Hmm. Maybe this is because you are good? If I could just open up the face of a 56 and hit higher, softer shots, I could see what you are saying more.

Also, I am probably coming at this wrong because I have a 53/58 setup, so when I think 56 degree, I am thinking of how I hit my 53, and when I think 60 degree, I am thinking of how I hit my 58.

BO, should the lie ever affect what club I chip w/ around the green? or should u pretty much chip w/ the club you are most comfortable chipping with? (my default is PW)

are there any drills for improving your chips out of different lies? or do u just have to play alot of rounds, and get into these spots and have experience.

like most, I chip decent out of nice short/fluffy lies.
but, when I am on dirt or thick grass, I have no idea if my ball is gunna go 1 yard, or if I am gunna skull it and chip from the opposite side of the green.

Everything affects what club you should chip with around the green.

What I do is go out on the course and just throw balls down in various lies to practice. Unless your course has an excellent short game area, this is pretty much the only way to really work at it.

If the ball is sitting down deep, it usually won't fly as far. If the grain of the grass is growing into you, the ball won't fly as far. If the grain of the grass is growing with you, the ball will fly farther. The more grass between your clubface and the ball, the shorter the ball will fly.

No comparison. Free everything great courses compared to free nothing and average courses.

Mostly the (currently) Adams Tour playing between New Mexico and Mississippi.

Care to explain your logic here?

Are you saying you wouldn't use the Pythagorean theorem if you found out he cheated on his wife?

I'm curious what your background in Mathematics is, and what your experience is with reading published papers.

1, let's keep this well confined to golf
2, on more than one occasion I have been forced to use the Pythagorean Theorem on the golf course from an adjacent fairway!
3, it was a sarcastic comparison regarding admiring those at the top of their profession who have been proven to be far less than reputable in their personal life. Tiger, Kobe, Big Ben, etc.
