Jason Sobel was just asked in his live blog when he last saw this much standing water in a tournament. His response:

Quote:
Maybe never. Any other event probably would have been suspended already. But there isn't much time to get in these matches. Delaying play would almost certainly mean the first day's matches would get pushed to Saturday and those matches would get pushed to Sunday. Good chance that a delay on any day could mean we're finishing this thing up on Monday, which nobody wants.

So playing through so much standing water is hardly optimal, but it's necessary right now if they want to avoid that Monday finish.
I'd rather watch Monday than watch the squeegee crew. Though I guess we could see both.

He just added:

Quote:
For some reason -- I don't know why, exactly -- there is a deadline of 6:43 p.m. local time (sundown) on Monday. If the matches aren't completed by then, they will be halved. Sounds silly; you'd think they would extend this to Thursday if they had to.

The good news is that the next two days are supposed to be better.
WTF at the deadline?

ahhh thanks liga....

I have a buddy who was an All american at NMSU, who plays blades, and he got a bunch of exemptions, and some of the shots he hits when he is not playing well surprises me.

Can you guys who have played nationwide+ before give me an idea of how many guys are hitting blades? i woudl venture like 65%?

it would be insanity to change your iron set just because it's wet. It would hardly even make a difference anyway.

so in a tournament where the players don't even get paid they are forced to play in this muck for TV/advertising dollars

No way, IMO...no one is used to playing from 4-4.5" rough that is soaking wet.

Sobel explained it wrong.

They halve any matches still on the course and add it to the team totals and that is the final score. There will be a winner and a loser (or a tie, in essence an American victory).

i would imagine, just about every player at this level probably has a few sets of irons, that they tinker with shafts etc. I don't think it would be absurd to say that one is a muscle back if they are cavity player.

but yes i understand the answer now. But i don't think it was a dumb question

As with many things in golf, the Ryder Cup is all about tradition. You don't screw with that for any reason. So no, nobody with a clue thinks the format should be changed.

As to the conditions, I love it. Golf as it was originally meant to be played. Yes, they could run into issues if the water overwhelms the squeegee crews, but until then, play on MacDuff, and damned to thee who first cries hold, enough!

Played Cruden Bay on the Northeast coast of Scotland in these exact conditions and loved every single minute of it.

And yes, it's a huge advantage to the Euros.

You imagine wrong, every player at this level has one set of irons precisely tailored to their needs. It would be like an outfielder switching to a catcher's mitt between innings.

Even if there is no weather delay, I'm not sure they will complete all the matches today. But if they do, the 8+ players that compete in both matches will be utterly worked. Dealing with all the elements and special gear just wears you down pretty quick.
