Good stuff on the first tee today:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=5646913

• To 21-year-old Rickie Fowler, the tiny U.S. player who looks more like a skateboarder than a golfer, somebody hollered out: "Hurry up, Rickie! You've got double math [class] today!"

• To Dustin Johnson, who was playing the German Martin Kaymer, who defeated him at the PGA this year when Johnson was penalized two shots for grounding his club in a bunker. "Hey, Dustin, he's got yer major!"

Good times...

FYI, I also DVR'd this and I don't think it was your DVR that froze on this putt. Mine also showed Rickie lining up the putt, freeze frame for about a minute, then Fowler walking toward the 18th after obviously making the putt.

The thing I don't like about Ryder Cup is when the crowd cheers on missed putts. I'm sure that goes on when in the US as well.

Ian Poulter must still be sober enough, he's twittering away.

GMac with the cup.

My favourite

• No matter which European was up, they'd sing the player's name to the Mexican tune of "Guantanamera": "One Ian Poulter! There's only one Ian Poulter!" Along came Francesco Molinari , whose brother, Edoardo, is also on the team. "Two Molinaris! There's only two Molinaris!"

(Probably slightly funnier if you're familiar with this chant).

Cliffs on Mahan speech? I looked for it everywhere and couldn't find it.

BigSoonerFan,
Oh, lol. I just looked up the video and it's hilarious. I love how confidently he pronounces it. "He's the EHH-pit-ome of strength. He's a wolf." ROFL, ty.

Golfchannel.com has the US press conference on video. Hunter had a hard time finishing his sentences, getting emotional as I am sure he feels he let the team down. Phil finished for him the first time. Then later, Cink commented on how no one wants to be in that situation where the whole Cup rides on your shoulder. But, Hunter took that role like a champ.

Yeah, he's probably confident because he's pronounced it that way for years and has never been corrected!

Still can't believe how stupid the system is to decide these matchups. My two cents:

Each session flip a coin, winning captains gets to choose whether to go first or last.

Captain who goes first calls out his first team (or singles player). Second captain responds with his team (or singles player). Then second captain goes first for the next group.

More strategy, and you'll probably get "better" matchups.

"Do I send such-and-such out early or late" is pretty silly.

You don't muck with Ryder Cup tradition, please quit confusing that with stupidity. Please.

The system you describe occurs in the President's Cup, an event that has only been around 16 years.

The randomness allows for cinderella stories though. Otherwise every year would be Westwood vs. Woods etc.

I like it personally

Except for in 1961, 1963, 1973, 1979, 2001, during WWII, and other mild changes (i.e. order of sessions), you're spot on.

Why would you want your best players out last when your 3 points behind? If Europe put all their strongest players out top, then it could be all over before your strong tail gets chance to have an effect...

I support your idea and recommend ignoring these traditionalists who think the way something's always been done must be the best way to do it. Especially when they would just rather call your idea "stupidity" than explain why they think the current system has more merit.

Also I seem to be the only one who's glad the European fans finally decided to start cheering missed putts and such. I bet they still complain when the US fans do it at the next cup though.

all they have to do now is to wear war caps to support the military, and then refuse to go play a ryder cup because they are scared, even thought people in the military are probably scared but dont have the option to refuse to fight, and they will be just like the US team.

just watched the Mahen speech and felt truly sorry for the guy, its one thing crying because you lost money in a golf tourney or whatever, but when you get broken up over a team event where the winners gets pretty much nothing, it makes it much more heartfelt.

7 birdies and an eagle from Tiger is way better than a US win for me. Can't wait for him to stomp heads next year. Good job Europe. As depressing as it much be to live there im happy you have something to smile about for awhile.

Yeah but you still picked Harrington to win, which is huge fail because he probably couldn't beat half this forum right now and Z. Johnson is El Clutcho.

Good lord, that press conference wasn't even THAT bad and it still made me sad.

I hope Hunter's Cowboy Cheerleader girlfriend makes him feel all kinds of better when he gets home.

The lineup at the beginning was fine. Stricker, Furyk and Cink did great (Fyryk should have at least halved. Donald got super lucky to make a par on 15). A relative newcomer like Mahan should have been in the missle of the pack and Tiger been last. Believe me, if it goes to the last match he'd make whoever he was playing **** his pants.
