It looks like we have some golf noobs and ignorant fools in this thread, so let me explain something to you.

The reason why the Ryder Cup exists is because, around the turn of the 20th century when golf was new in the US and gaining popularity, American professionals had a very difficult time getting jobs. Club owners/members who didn't know anything about golf would literally hire anyone with a British accent to be their golf pro.

There is some debate about whose idea it was, but the point is, American professionals wanted a way to prove they were as good as British players. The Ryder Cup matches were an exhibition for publicity and thus, equal opportuntiy employment.

Of course, nowdays, none of the players were or ever will be club pros. There is no logical basis for animosity to exist between US and European golfers. In fact, about half the European players play a full or nearly full schedule on the US PGA tour.

The modern Ryder Cup is an exhibition match to promote the respective PGA tours, and make ****loads of money for television networks and the respective PGA associations. It is definitely not about "playing for your country." That's the biggest line of bull**** ever and only a fool would believe it. You and your country get nothing if a squad of 12 golfers happen to beat a squad of 12 golfers from another country.

If you spout vitriol towards people who happen to reside in another country based on the outcome of a series of golf matches (or any sporting event) that you don't even benefit from in any way, then you're a giant douche and a sucker. You're trying to fill the void in your empty pathetic life with anger and arbitrary nationalism. You're the kind of mouth breathing boob the mass media loves, because your emotions are so easy to manipulate.

I haven't seen every second of coverage, but I haven't seen a thing the last three days for anybody to get worked up about. It's a different contest involving some partisanship that many viewers aren't used to.

2. if I see that my teammates are gaining ground, what is my tendency? Do I now try harder, because we now have a chance, or do I now not try not as hard, because things are not as desperate.? I mean it as a serious question..
3. Ask NTbo or ship-this or other golfers on this thread who have significant experience in golf if "trying harder" really helps. You can try harder in football and hockey, but golf???

NEWPORT, Wales -- Corey Pavin came in for some ribbing in the press after he forgot to introduce Stewart Cink at the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor on Thursday.

He pulled a reversal on the writers after the matches Sunday.

Pavin was finishing his press conference when the Monday singles lineup came off the copier. Since the captains blindly submit their lineup (they don't choose whom each player will face), no one knew the match-ups, including Pavin. Since he had the sheet in front of him, he read them to the media.

One by one, he read off the names of the players in the first 11 matches, and then he stopped.

"And who can tell me the last one?" he asked.

There was a brief pause before someone shouted out Hunter Mahan's name, and another, slightly longer pause before another journalist finally mentioned Graeme McDowell.

Pavin laughed. He'd made his point. Said the U.S. captain, "It's hard to remember 12 names, isn't it?"

Euros have always expressed their enthusiasm in the instance of American misfortune at the RC. It is appropriate because it is their gain. There's a tiny element of heckling that accompanies this, and it is wrong, and it has been more of a problem here than there.
