That is correct. I hit my irons a fairly normal amatuer distance, but am very short with woods. I think it is the rotation thing, but because when I do hit a good drive, I feel myself rotating much more and when I banana one off to the right, I feel very upright and rigid.

I also have much less of a natural feeling swinging a longer club, whereas I can grab a 3hybrid and feel perfect addressing the ball.

i have this problem too. stronger grip definitely helped me improve my driving. and i will also note that if you look at angles of approach for pga/lpga for driver vs. other clubs there is a huge difference. so in a way, it is a very different swing (good subject for a thread)

also, i play ragged muni's mostly.... when i play a nice course with tight fairways, my driving to iron distance ratios improve like crazy (way more roll on drives... and it's not like my irons are teed up a little bit anymore. the flyer effect at muni's i think)

so i'm going out to try to break 80 today. probably play the same brutal front 9 twice.

i don't break 80 (and it'll be tough on this front 9) because:

1) i don't drive/first shot on par 4/5 straight enough.

2) my wedge control is terrible.

3) my pitching/chipping isn't tight enough, but it's close (have been working exclusively on utley/runyan stuff and it seems to work. just got runyan's main book today. looks awesome)

4) too many chunks/blades/skulls, but that's wet winter golf in the northwest somewhat. and utley/runyan helping alot with that.

i think 3 and 4 are taking care of themselves. and think i can tame #1 myself. not sure about #3 (wedge control) though (maybe lessons when i have time/money)

i could throw uneven lies in there too but those are coming along

This is the start of my 3rd summer playing Golf. 2nd as a member of a muni course. My goal last summer was to shoot 90. My best round was 87. I live in BC Canada so my local course opened 2 weeks ago. I just took a lesson and I learned a ton. The instructor had me use a teaching devise called "pivot pro." It really straightened me out. My divots are now pointed at the flag instead of out left. This is helping with distance and getting rid of my slice. I have not yet made it my natural swing, but i'm getting there.

I shot 91 yesterday, my 1st round after the lesson. My goal for the summer is to consistently shoot 85 and break 80 once.

91 yesterday, 50-41. back nine is far easier. front 9 is beast from blues, but i drove like S....

my breakdown of lost strokes (3 holes played more like bogey holes so not 19 strokes of suckage to allocate)

driving 8.5 strokes TERRIBLE. was trying 2 drivers. have to play with one. if i went back to 2 drivers ever again i think i would just have a short and a long driver. both with same flex (or playing as the same flex. have clubmaker figure it out)

irons 4.5 strokes (NOT GOOD, NOT TERRIBLE)

chips/pitch 4.5 strokes POOR

putting 1 stroke for sure (usually don't allocate here, good putter and never sure what putts i should be making. sandy greens too.... excellent lag putting. mediocre short putting)

2 triples and 3 doubles on front nine. and 4 of the holes it was driving that was the issue.

was also playing new irons for me. so a few understandable problems.

must straighten drives.

This was freaking close...

After I holed the par on 18 I high fived one of the other players and said I had gotten 79.

Damn headcount of off by one. Anyway former best round ever was 83 strokes.

+1, ty

so finally new season has started. Had a several DR and it's not looking optimistic (duffs and slices). Short game sessions weren't that bad.

also played one tournament already, didn't want to but decided to make it a practice round. Barely used driver, mostly irons.
Greens are still very slow (bcos of long winter they cannot cut them very short yet).
Made 7 GIR which is great- but only 1 birdie, 2 pars and 4 dbogeys (3putts ffs)

I feel like that with intense DR sessions in next couple of weeks I will be back in low 80's very soon.

Wait, this is a LFS specific topic? Oh, you need a blog, not a message board.

Played just a front9 today, shot 40: 2 birdies, 1 par, 6 bogeys! no double bogey first time no db just a front9 but still very happy.

greens are still very slow
after a lesson with my coach I feel a big change in my swing, need about 2-3 weeks to get comfortable and consistent with it

really big big hopes right now about this season

i shot an 86 on a pretty short course. a little bit tight and greens weren't too receptive plus they seemed to have alot of pins on slopes. also, no roll and pretty nasty rough. but it was short course with alot of easy holes.

anyway, front nine a ton of bogeys and two doubles. back 9 (it's just a 9 hole course, so exactly same layout) i'd learnt a fair amount about the course/greens, one stupid triple (hard to understand how i got that score) and mostly pars.....

realizations:

have to par both par 5's and par 3's (except perhaps for very difficult ones)

really need to get up and down from off the green. especially straight forward chips and pitches. i think this is my true impediment to breaking 80

this is an old one, but drive the ball straight. i think it's more important than all others, unless you are duffing chips/pitches/etc.

gonna get there. need to drive ball straight.

I think we need a "break 80" thread in general, or maybe just make this that thread if LFC is ok with it.

Anyway, I too am the hunt in to try to break 80 sometime in the near future. Shot 87 yesterday from blues of Chester Washington GC, so I have a ways to go. I am losing a crap ton of strokes to putting. I 3-putted from 18 inches, it was unbelievable. My practice on the putting green goes good but it doesnt seem to translate to the course putting greens. I think if I eliminate 3-putts I break 80 almost immediately given I have at least 5 3-putts a round if not more (not including 4-putts!)

So I qualified for Polish finals of World Golfers Championships.

Scored a weak 91 but it was enough for 3rd in my HCP group. Conditions were very tough, it was raining almost all day, and greens were ultra slow as the mower broke down day before.

Startem with 5cm out of bounds on #1, then made par with second ball. Par on the #2 and 6x bogeys on fron9. Just coudn't made up&down. My long game was really decent. Short game was poor.

On back 9 started with 5 GIR out of first 6 holes, made 4 pars. On #12 (par5) made GIR that 4 putts..... first putt was ultra tough with flag just above huge ridge. Had about 6feet 2nd putt, made it long, tried to finish from 2feet in 2 seconds almost one handed and missed.

on #17 (par5) great drive. Decided to lay up but I duffed, than 5hybrid right next to the tree, took unplayable and dropped in the rough, approch to the next tree and another unplayable, one more duffed shot. Finished with 9 (one putt).

Made 64% fairways
39% GIR
39 putts!!!!

short game short game short game and will break 80 very soon

finals of WGC are in August, winner goes to world finals in RSA

nice! Also in on the break 80 crew this season as I've strung together a few sub90 rounds but have yet to get lower than 83.

Meaning you recorded a par on the hole (which is amazing) or your final score for the hole was +2? If the first, story please!

unfortunately +2
it's a reachable par4 - 280yards but it's quite narrow.

it's driver or iron7 + PW for me

got 26 days to Club Championships
haven't played much last 2 weeks.

would you recommend any specific training or should I just stick to my normal training and just put a lot of hours?

well, i was almost there - breaking 80 on 138 rated layout... but then it got too dark....

what i've done...

drive straight. course manage by using 3w and 3i off some par 4's

good fw play

got more ambitious again with short game. 60 degree wedge but only near green

straightened out my putting.... actually went to course with only putter... really, really helped

to be done:

irons can improve

more course management. where is pin re: misses? and not so obvious ones

repeated difficult shots. pitches with ball way above feet

also working low spin distance driver and 13 degree loft accuracy driver. similar shaft setups. working very nicely

long time no see

unfortunatelly haven't got much time this season to play golf full time job, gf etc
most round in high 80's low 90's

best tournament round: (3 out of bounds....)

best single 9 holes: (front9 - 39, back9 51......) I believe I started this round on hole #4)

This weekend there is 2day club championship, best tournament to finally break 80, don't you think?
will upload few videos soon with my current swing
