What he said was definitely stupid, and only Stevie knows if he meant it as racial or not.

It's interesting to wonder what would have been said about Vijay Singh if he had said after he won the 1998 PGA that he wanted to stick it up Steve Stricker's white butt. Or if Shaq would have said he wanted to stick it up Dirk Nowitski's white butt after he won the 2006 NBA championship.

I'd like to think that the vast majority of PGA Tour members don't care one iota about skin color. Perhaps that's a figment of my ignorance because I've never cared about it. Unfortunately there are those out there who are prejudiced.

Bottom line is in this age of twitter people just talk too much and then the media blows it up. If you're a high-profile athlete just shut up and do your job. Don't talk about yourself, don't talk about others in your profession. It's not difficult.

Williams will remain on the bag for Scott as he competes in the Australian Open next week. He will be grouped with Tiger Woods and Jason Day for the first two rounds of the event – a decision made several weeks ago.

You need thousands of people to produce one star in golf. No way to tell talent at a young age (save Tiger ironically). So overall, the economics of black people don't produce golfers. I am a pretty well off exec and golf is brutally expensive for me and I am not sure if I am going to have my kids pursue it either.

The US might be different but in Ireland, it's very cheap for kids to start playing golf, Holywood, where McIlroy started is about $100 a year for 8-10 year olds and about $300 for 10-18. Pickup a cheap set of clubs and a few lessons and off you go.

From the Irish pros, the only one I know that came from a middle class background is McGinley, Harrington's father was a police sergeant, McDowell's a lab technician, McIlroy's was a barman.

Excellent point. In Scotland, basically everybody plays golf regardless of status.

There's not a huge amount of black people in Ireland, but if a young black person in Ireland hasn't been inspired to take up the game in the last few years, then they never will.

I'm following Irish golfers for a fair few years, when Harrington won the Open, I thought, that's it, things are only downhill from here.

Charlie Sifford, Jim Dent, Calvin Peete and Lee Elder all became solid pros when golf was arguably more elitist and blacks were even less able to afford golf.

I think it has much less to do with $$ than it does with the fact that golf isn't a 'black sport'. I imagine a black kid would often get teased by his friends if he played golf.

Yeah I always thought "black Irish" meant:

Irish
blue eyes
black hair

typically with darker skin than most but not necessary. Pierce Brosnan is a good example of "black Irish". And Feherty. These guys do good with the ladies. My two brothers and dad are all considered black Irish. I somehow got stuck with the Norman ginger hair. lol. Mom blond, little sis brown hair. With dad's silver now we've got every damn hair color covered but we've all got the same eyes.

Anyway I see old black guys playing golf all the time here in Houston. I do play a lot at cheap munis during the daytime though, but there's always old black dudes out playing and they have a good time. They seem to really enjoy hammering a little white thing 60 times a day.
