Need some advice from the crowd. I am going to start playing again but I want to take my time and do it right. Not interested in taking lessons yet - just want to hit balls and get the feel back. Has anyone else laid off playing for many, many years and started back up? If so how did you relearn?

My thought was to take my 8 iron and my sand wedge for the next couple weeks and work from half swings up to full swings to try to get my feel and rhythm back in sync. At the same time work on 3 - 5 foot putts. Thoughts?

How regularly and well did you play before? Were you competitive; do you have the desire to play competitively now/in the future?

Easing back is probably a great idea for your body and game though.

BITD - in my 30's I carried a 5 at my club. I played a lot then. In my 40's when I moved here it was probably an 7. I was playing maybe 3 times a month, but hitting balls weekly when I moved, but I did not take it too seriously. Since then - 14 years ago....once, twice a year and no practice unless it was before going out to play. The sad thing is I live in a community with a GREAT course and practice facility (http://www.celebrationgolf.com/course-flyover).

I wasn't competitive so to speak. I played mostly socially, except we did play some big money/prize scrambles. I am 18 months away from turning 60 and the thought of playing against some of the 60 year olds I see around here is enticing.

I think you can go at it harder than you think. I would probably take all of your clubs to the range and swing everything. Go 3x a week to start and then depending on how much you play you will be back in no time.

I am a fairly good example. I played until my son was born and then took 10 years off. When I stopped I was around a 7 or so. Took me a year to get back down into the single digits.

That sounds perfect! Lots of chipping.

Ha! Just played there while in town for the PGA Merchandise show. Solid track. Didn't care for the water range though.

If you play from the tips it is tough. The water range is godawful, but the putting green and practice holes are nice. I go down the street to Falcons Fire to practice hitting full clubs.

Glad you liked it. It is one of the best kept secrets around here.
