Best way to figure this out is to imagine where you would normally be in three shots trying to whack it against the fence or some other strategy vs. where you would normally hit your third shot from the tee. A high handicapper would probably be better off whacking it against the fence since he's already over the water whereas he could easily dump it in the water hitting three from the tee.

What's the rule for a ball stuck in a pile of limbs that are down off a tree waiting to be removed? If relevant these limbs were down from an ice storm and would definitely be removed when maintenance gets to them.

GUR or unplayable lie?

Ground under repair I'm pretty sure.

Well, I think it depends on if its actually piled for removal. If its just a limb or two hanging off the tree I think you're SOL. If they've made a pile then you can get relief.

I'm sure BO will know for sure.

Yeah assuming they're piled up by the grounds crew I think it's under repair.

I don't remember the year for sure (maybe the year Phil won his first) but I remember this happening to Ernie Els at the Masters. He was way left I think on 2 and got a ruling that they were piled for removal and was able to drop without penalty

You guys got it, random limbs down you can attempt to move them but of course if you move your ball you're hosed. If they're piled for removal it's a free drop.

The Els incident was actually on 11.

they weren't piled for removal, but basically every single tree on the course had limbs from twigs to 3" in diameter down. The grounds crew had piled and sawed a bunch of them on the front nine (including maybe a dozen fallen trees), but hadn't touched any on the back nine. Is it really still a penalty just because they didn't have the man power to get it done in time? They were all clearly down from the ice storm last wed and thur.

Doesn't matter. That's like saying your ball is behind a tree that is scheduled to be cut down in a month and you want relief because if they had the manpower it would have already been cut down.

Perhaps there was a temporary local rule posted in the shop that allowed free relief from limbs down from storm damage?

And again, we're simply talking about the letter of the law here. Not many golfers adhere to these hard and fast rules.

is hitting it in or across a road OB if it is not marked? Obviously if there are stakes, a line, or a local rule then it is OB, but if none of this exists then can you play it back across (or even from) a road?

Not sure if it is a rule of golf, but generally golf course boundaries are considered to be the OB line. So in that case it would be the road if there is no fence or line.

Ok now I'm sure. Was bored and looked it up.

Out of Bounds
“Out of bounds’’ is beyond the boundaries of the course or any part of the course so marked by the Committee.

Well, there nothing wrong with moving it while you hit the ball. Not good for the forearm or the club though.

Rules say before you play your shot you cannot move anything that adheres to the ground. So a rock just laying on the ground can be moved, but a rock half lodged in the ground cannot.

Like Tiger getting the fans to move a boulder that was in front of his ball.

I'm curious on the equipment rules for putters. If you have two grips on the putter can the shaft between the two grips be bent? This is assuming yoyr hands would both be below the bend when holding the club.

All I can find is that there has to be 1.5" between the grips and the axis of the grips must coincide with the axis of the shaft.

I thought I remembered reading something that said the shaft must be straight from the top of the grip down to 5" above where it meets the putter head but now I can't find it.

The shaft cannot be bent. Not going to delve into the back of the rule book, but this rule almost certainly applies to all clubs and would be found before the section describing the exceptions for putters which I basically committed to memory after an ignorant rules official with a grudge tried to DQ me.

Are there any rules against someone running up to you and fistpumping in your face when they down a 3ft putt. Basically my uncle is a **** when it comes to enforcing rules and I usually let it go cause he never wins even after he adds a couple of shots each round. I'm thinking i'd like to wipe the smug smile off his face one day.

No. If he's that happy about holing a tap-in, perhaps the next time he misses a 3-footer you should return the favor.

So even if there were a gazillion stroke penalty, how would it benefit you?

Just raise the stakes and keep playing and laughing. Or find someone to play with who won't hurt your feelings.

I guess I wanna shove the rule book up his **** and I know hitting him with a legit penalty with have him reeling.

Thanks for the reply NtnBO by the way.

Cart path sign is in fairway with ball next to it. I take the cart path sign out, but the ground sticks up around the hole it was in and it interferes with the ball. Can I pat it down? Do I get relief?
