First off is almost always a good time. For starters, you get to play 9 holes with no other foot traffic on the greens. The only time it might be bad is if it's cold in the morning and the ball just isn't flying anywhere.
A nemesis in professional golf is crusty grass, both in the fairway and on the green. When things firm up in the afternoon the grass can get that sheen on it and you have little control. Balls land in the fairway and do crazy things. But it's terrible on the greens, instead of a smooth roll the ball literally bounces the entire way in addition to being faster. Tough to make putts when the ball is bouncing.
