Read that and see if it changes your opinion. There is something very wrong with the way the NCAA handled this. They need a clear cut rule of what is/isn't a slow play violation and when it should be handed out. The way this was handled was worse than awful.

I'm all for slow play penalties, but not in the way this was handled.

It would basically be like an NBA ref calling a tech on a player/coach with the game tied with 1 second remaining in Game 7 for doing the exact thing that other players/coaches had been doing the entire game or entire series. If that happened, everyone would be in an uproar. This is golf, so this doesn't get as much attention, but that doesn't mean it was handled in the proper way.

how is this thread dead when our protagonist is probably playing practice rounds with phil mickelson and banging tiger woods' mistresses in Pennsylvania as we speak

I played at Illinois for Small. He doesn't do anything that doesn't serve his own best interests. He missed several tournaments we were playing in, including big ten pac ten challenge, in order to play in tour events the year after he won the club pro and had 8 exemptions.

Since I'm a donkey and don't have any tickets except to a potential Monday playoff, I'm gonna have to request Michael be tied for the lead after 72 holes.

Me too. I live less than 2 hours away and never even thought to get tickets.

We had a guy on our team whose brother was a highly recruited player at Illinois. He hated Mike Small with a passion, said he was a huge ******* control freak narcissist. Said Mike would randomly make them run 5 miles at 6am for no reason and bench anyone who didn't show up and other such nonsense.

Anyone able to find a futures bet for our guy to finish as low Am?

Sportsbet (in Australia) has him at +500, the 4th shortest price out of the 10 player field

I've put a few speculative dollars on our guy at +80000 to win the whole thing.

The whole wake up at 6am and run 5 miles seems pretty standard for anyone playing a sport in college. I'm sure he's a dbag, but still.

Yeah, if you think that's bad you should have played for Mike Holder. Personally I wish my coach in college would have instilled that in me. Granted I played from 1991-1996 in college which was kind of before workout mania struck golf, but the big programs like Okie State, ASU, Texas, Oklahoma all had early morning workouts. It's not the workout that's important as much as it keeps kids from going out and being idiots all night long. Sure it is a matter of what are you looking to get out of college...a bunch of parties and less golf and school work, or would you rather learn how to be a focused high achieving adult? I'd take the latter and needed more of it.

Still, pretty dbaggy considering golf is one of the few sports where there's absolutely no running.

No, but conditioning and being able to control your heart rate among many other benefits is huge. And again, it isn't necessarily about the run itself, it is about the work ethic you learn and get ingrained in you during your formative years.

Agree, but also a serious cause of burnout. My wife spent college working from like 6 am to 10 pm either on golf or school and she wasn't having a lot of fun.

Always felt like the 6 am workouts they put her through was such an ass whipping that it adversely affected scores on the course.

I hear ya, but potential burnout is just part of attempting to excel. I preferred to try and have more fun in college but as a result I am certain I never reached my potential in the game. It's a fine line and there really isn't much way to know what is right at the time. But staying in peak physical condition via early workouts should not be the cause of burnout, but like I say it is a fine line between too much with zero down time and not giving it your all. Again, most of the kids who elect to go to college on an athletic scholarship are dreaming of playing at the next level in their sport and unless you are a simple freak of nature in this day and age running the risk of burnout is just part of the deal. It is just too competitive in professional sports with a growing population and better training.

As ship noted above, its more about instilling discipline than anything else.
