There is prize money available for the top 45 finishers at final stage. Like any professional event, if you enter as an amateur you are not eligible for prize money. More college players over the last few years have entered to see what they can do since it's basically no risk other than the cost of playing.
If you remember ship's Q school stories, he entered as a 30-something amateur and advanced to final stage and in the process had multiple officials confused as to how this was supposed to work. I remember - we've got an amateur here... no, he doesn't look like he's in college....
