Mods it's probably time to merge this thread with the LIV golf one.

what i'm curious about is how the merger impacts the liv player payments.
it's been publicly demonstrated the publicity numbers were not up front cheques; instead promises to compensate up to a certain amount based upon performance and tournament purses.
hard to imagine that cash dam will remain in place

from my understanding they did get huge up front payments in the form of signing bonus, but the players had to work through their signing bonus before they got additional payments. i doubt they would have been able to poach that many big names with only the promise of future payments with the players knowing the league could fold up at any time.

Does this mean we can celebrate Brook's amazing PGA win now and can stop talking about that guy who folds shirts for a living but made the cut?

Can the PGA Tour and LIV legally merge? It’s no sure thing, experts say

Quote:
Just because the warring parties have come to an accord doesn’t mean they get to ally themselves in battle. Government regulators will want to have a look, according to Craig Seebald, a partner and antitrust specialist with Vinson & Elkins, an international law firm. “This merger is going to come under scrutiny,” Seebald says. “It is far from a done deal.”
Quote:
Another difference is that those other mergers involved struggling upstarts, and in antitrust law, Seebald says, there is a doctrine known as the “failing firm defense,” which grants leeway to mergers between larger entities and small ones that stand slim chance of survival anyway.

“The thinking is, ‘If this business or this league is already going under in another year or two, what’s the harm in allowing the deal to go through,’” Seebald says. “You get to keep the team in Buffalo, or wherever. It’s good for politicians. It’s good for people.”

LIV, of course, is not a bootstrapping operation. No merger involving such powerful parties is likely to get a “failing firm” pass.

“It’s not only a different era,” Seebald says. “It’s a different situation, too.”

all this said, Chamblee brought up an excellent point yday. KSA wins either way the gov't(s) rule. think about it, let's say the merger doesn't go through. elite golfers will just migrate to a KSA golf league anyway now that the PGAT has stabbed them in the back

Monahan had to know this deal would be unpopular with many, and that he would look like the world's biggest hypocrite after using the 9/11 families as a talking point.

So I think the only explanation is that he literally thought his choices were either sell out to the Saudis, or preside over the demise of the PGA Tour. Sponsors were already pulling out. The elevated purses that were designed to keep even more players from defecting to Liv, were not sustainable. The PGA Tour, I suspect, was closer to circling the drain than anyone imagined.

So, Monahan made a deal with the devil. Either that or have his legacy be as the guy who did nothing while the PGA Tour wilted and died.

Rumour is the PGAT thought it was going to lose the anti-trust battle and it wasn't a financial decision.

With no legal knowledge, I still see this as the real reason....

Maybe this was the end game for the Saudis for the whole LIV venture was to force a merger so they get something permanent from now on and included in the PGA tour

My thoughts on the reasons, completely pulled out of my butt with no specific information:

1/ Tour was about to lose a lot of sponsors, with Honda being the canary in the coal mine. Partly because of them not wanting to cough up larger purses for elevated events, especially in the face of economic concerns.

2/ They were going to lose the antitrust case and there was some damning stuff about to come out in discovery. I have a strong suspicion there the tour was doing a lot of shady stuff behind the scenes to keep LIV off TV and not covered by media outlets, and that was not going to look good.

3/ The Saudis realized trying to buy all the world's best players one by one for huge amounts of money was stupid. They just had to buy one guy who is a douche bag in a cheap suit.

So the solution to that is to create a worldwide monopoly?

Yes, if the choice is to allow discovery and exposure of some possible underhanded things the leadership may have been doing. Better to float on a large boat than overturn in a canoe.

Full Swing had their cameras rolling Tuesday!

Quote:
Mumm said that two separate crews from this year’s “Full Swing” project were filming Tuesday when all hell broke loose. The show does not film every day — they shot close to 300 days last year — so Tuesday being a filming day was a fortuitous break. Mumm said they had a crew at the RBC Canadian Open in Toronto and locker room access to the players as they learned of the news.

I think almost exclusively the bolded. Jay kept going back to the well and the sponsors had to start thinking this was too much

Maybe but I'm not sure how merging with the only competitor solves this issue. I fully expect this to go through but if there is a snag this could be it??

I also think the Saudi's weren't super thrilled with the idea of going through discovery

Correct. LIV as we know it now was maybe just an entre to put pressure on the tour. Laughable that Greggy was running the show to be honest unless it was meant as a loss leader
