Absolutely. I used to watch tennis religiously but once Connors and Sampras showed up and started the whole serve-and-volley power game it marked the start of a decline where tennis got boring really fast.

Lendl and Edberg were my favourites - and my favourite game was one with Lendl and Michael Chang. Chang being the clear underdog but refusing to give up and being so tired in the end that he did an underhand serve.

The stories you got in tennis back then were clearly so much better than what you get today.

Not sure about golf though - the game is getting longer and stronger, but it's still pretty enjoyable. The game is clearly weighted in favour of the big hitters, but not as much as tennis ended up being. At least not yet.

Lendl is supposed to have been big into golf and dabbled on the Florida mini-tours in the 90's. Supposedly he could do that thing where you keep bouncing a ball off the clubface, except he would do it with the grip.

I remember that Chang French Open (at least I think it was that tournament) where he could barely stand.

Those rallies back then were epic. As were the personalities.

Women’s tennis is far more exciting to watch than tennis. Which is why the prize money is almost equivalent because of the stellar ratings.

Golf does an excellent job (so far) of protecting the Majors from silly scoring. They aren’t shooting 20 under par. It isn’t only long-ball hitters winning. They are able to adjust risk-reward. None of those are PGA Tour productions.

Props to Bryson. He is getting massive attention especially because of no Tiger or any other sports and he is absolutely nailing it. Currently in 2nd place.

Let’s see how his body holds up before proclaiming him king!

Yes, I'm sure there's some overlap in skills for golf and tennis.

Norways top tennis player Casper Ruud (who's 36th in the ATP rankings currently) is a +1.8 hcp at golf and has gotten a wild card for this years Norwegian national golf championship later this month.

He's only 21 and has obviously spent most/all of his time working on his tennis-game, so how he also manages to get a +1.8 hcp for golf as well I have no idea.

Yes, it was the French Open one - it is the most memorable match of all for me as I was a huge Lendl-fan but Chang really won me over during that match and made me happy a guy I 'kinda liked' beat my all-time favourite.

Always preferred the Australian and French Opens also as they were played on clay which made the play a bit slower.

I followed womens tennis for years after I gave up on mens tennis and agree it was/is a lot more fun. I kinda dropped off that too during Seles' domination though and was pretty much done by the time the Williams' started ruling.

Golf is the only sport that I can think of that can just keep expanding the play field to ensure scoring records aren’t dusted. Baseball, basketball, football, etc have to stay within the confines.

It used to be nearly impossible to break 60. Now it is routinely cracked.

I don’t even know what the scoring records are or if anyone cares. You can’t compare course to course.

The only thing being smashed is driving distance. To a shocking degree.
Sorry it was Shifty's point, my apologies. I'm looking at scoring records like this. I wouldn't expect these scoring records from 30-50 years ago to remain on the books but they do. Course's have been lengthened but not to the tune of 50yds/drive. Bad agronomy, balata balls, steel shafts, small heads, persimmon woods, blade irons, 42" drivers, etc are a lot to overcome.

It’s so hard to compare scores in golf.

The only scores I am aware our those you brought up. Especially US Open and 63 because Johnny Miller makes it a point to let us know...that was him.

I do know that US Open wants ~par to win. PGA Championship is meaningless because they play(ed) in brutal heat and they can’t do much with rough. Masters is ~10 under. British Open all over the map due to weather.

I do know that 60 has been smashed 10 times.

No clue (or care) of any regular stops.

It hasn’t seem to hurt them at all and the only complaints are from old-time pros.

I took some snippets from Bryon’s 3rd round today:

***After a 364 yard drive on the 397-yard par-4 first,

After a 338 yard drive on the 635-yard par-5 fourth,

After a 374 yard drive on the 393-yard par-4 13th,

DeChambeau hit his drive 362 yards getting on the green in 2, and rolled a birdie on the 555-yard par-5 14th.

After a drive to the right side of the fairway on the 455-yard par-4 18th hole, DeChambeau had a 101 yard approach shot***

Holy sh#%!!!

I keep doing a double-take when I see how far he is hitting it. He is turning legitimate modern-day golf courses into pitch and putts.

Obviously has a great short game as well. He certainly isn’t a novelty. He is in contention every week.

Impressive

Must have been the 13th I saw during the broadcast, he was in the greenside bunker, the graphic on the screen said the hole was playing 399 yards.

It's amazing how straight he hits it when he's swinging that hard.
07-04-2020 , 08:20 PM
did you guys catch the bit when he was asked what he was eating every day?
*paraphrasing*
breakfast is usually 4 eggs, 5 pieces of bacon, and a couple of protein shakes
i'll have a peanut butter & jelly sandwich out on the course and a couple more protein shakes
dinner is steak and potatoes with a couple of more protein shakes.
interviewer: how many calories is that?
i don't count calories so i don't really know...probably 3,500 or something like that?

i'm starting to wonder if he's gained three or four hat sizes like Barry Bonds did.

Bryson takes issue with cameraman trying to hurt his brand: https://golfweek.usatoday.com/2020/0...is-true-brand/
07-05-2020 , 09:31 AM
I probably won't bother watching eiher the confrontation or the spin, but regardless I'd say about the only thing that would hurt his brand right now is if he came out as a white supremacist or something. A little controversy, a little ego, ruffling a few feathers is a good thing in a world full of beige golfers who are utterly unmemorable. Seriously, can anyone recite three interesting things about anyone else on the leaderboard?

Let it flow, DeChambr0, it's okay for your brand to include a little bit of crazy with the 'mad scientist' business. You aren't going to be loved by all no matter what you do.

Matt Wolffe is way cooler than Dechamblow.

I’m not disagreeing but what do you know about him other than that he’s young and has a funky swing?

You forgot how shocked we was with the drive that only went 320 and just missed clearing the bunker. Entertaining

Not even close. I saw the interview where he was naming all the food he eats in a typical day. I'd estimate the total calorie intake to be closer to 4,500 - 5,000.
07-05-2020 , 11:52 AM
He’s definitely not making gainz on 3500 calories a day, especially walking 5 miles plus.
07-05-2020 , 12:00 PM
He needs to eat more to keep up with Wolffe

07-05-2020 , 06:38 PM
Well I heard maybe once or fifteen times that Bryson needs steel shafts on his wedges

Impressive start for the year.

Wolff - 30 birdies and 1 eagle
DeChambeau - 27 birdies and 1 eagle
BDC wins by 3.

Pretty insane start to the restart by BDC.

6th-8th-3rd-4th-2nd-5th-Win.
