Justin Leonard thinks Phil should have been DQ'd, because he did it to obtain a competitive advantage. Some competitive advantage.

Going to have to turn this off, some GC talking head was just wringing his hands over how the USGA should be concerned that people watching yesterday might think golf is too hard and not want to take up the game. Let's get to to some live action already.

I’m assuming after all the crying yesterday, the course will be soft as a marshmallow today? A shame if so.

Solid contender. I would need to see him and Strange in an Official Golf Spew-Off to crown my champion.

It seems that Mickelson did this intentionally to poke fun at the USGA. It comes off very poorlu for him and beneath a person of his status.

Really, what is to stop him from just running next to the hole? He put the USGA in a tough spot by having to make a ruling and then says he did it for an advantage after they only assess a 2-shot penalty vs. a DQ if he was clearly trying to get ahead by the ploy.

Not end of world.

I don't believe that he did it intentionally to make a point. He was getting frustrated and temporarily lost his mind. We've all been there. Its definitely not the end of the world, I'm surprised how spun up some folks got about this.

So, he lied. Are you ok with that? Why wouldn't he just say that then? He really should be DQd if he did it for an advantage.

We haven't all been there. This is the US Open on a Saturday. Him and John Daly. You are supposed to act like a professional.

Lighten up, Francis.

Note I could care less about the DQ/no DQ question. But let’s not act like he took his dick out and peed his name in cursive on the 13th green.

Which, had he done that, would at least have improved the course setup.

viewed through a golf etiquette prism (during arguably this country's biggest golfing weekend) that's basically what he did. it's the reason it got so much press and ppl are still debating it the Monday after the tournament.

Phil failed twice. first with his action and secondly by not DQing himself.

It's pretty obvious Phil was frustrated and was giving the finger to the USGA.

However his explanation was as bad or worse than the actual violation... he basically said he was waiting for a scenario where he could bust out his knowledge of that rule to his advantage. Which is a bizarre thing to even think about in advance.

if you guys could write down which breaches of "golf etiquette" are punishable by firing squad and which ones are only a DQ and a permanently sullied reputation, that'd be great

next you'll be demanding that stealing third base in a 8-0 game should result in the runner losing his left foot

Hitting a moving ball on purpose to try and save strokes during a competition is not just violating "golf etiquette". It's not like he didn't replace a divot.

It's cheating.

There is no bigger fan of Phil than me. But cheating is not cool. Especially in golf where there is usually no ref or umpire watching every shot.

It’s not like I know the guy. My perception of him dropped. He was intentionally angle-shooting (according to him) which actually is stranger. Wednesday Pro-Am ok. Saturday US Open, not ok.

"Phil really did want to understand how the rule operates because he didn't want to ... as he said to me, 'Mike, I don't want to play in this championship if I should have been disqualified,'" USGA chief executive Mike Davis said. "That's where we clarified that 'Phil, you make a stroke at a moving ball, so we have to apply that rule.'

LOL. 4 days later...

Quote:
Four days after hitting a moving ball at the U.S. Open, which cost him a two-stroke penalty and ignited a firestorm of criticism over his handling of the situation, Phil Mickelson on Wednesday apologized for his actions.

"I know this should've come sooner, but it's taken me a few days to calm down," Mickelson said in a statement. "My anger and frustration got the best of me last weekend. I'm embarrassed and disappointed by my actions. It was clearly not my finest moment and I'm sorry."

I brought my kids over to The Travelers Championship today for the sum of the Pro-Am today. I got a nice picture with my kids and Jason Day. The fan zone was awesome.

We saw Bubba, Day, and Spieth. The kids loved the beginning of their summer break.

He misplayed this big time where he thought saying he was angle-shooting was a better response than just saying he messed up. Which opened him up to even more cheating allegations.
