Good thing Phil can swing a golf club. Pretty much common sense to not speed walk over wet sludgy rocks.

I feel like I got jobbed the other week in a team format at local club. Guy claimed an 18 handicap, goes out and shoots a true 76 and wipes the floor with me and my partner. Wouldn't have been so tilting if it weren't the semis. Go from g-teed cashola to diddly squat. I got reverse sandbagged.

Lol at 18 handicap shooting 76. What a douche.

Handicap tournaments are the worst. Have to cheat to win.

Leaderboard is kind of packed but I'm just not sure I see Brant throwing enough strokes away for the guys behind him to pass him.

I get a kick out of how they had to wait 20-30 minutes to hit there drives on the second hole?

Picture of the waves crashing on 18 make this a bucket list item

I don't think an 18 handicap has ever shot a 76 in the history of golf. Their average score is going to be like 95. Maybe even higher.

I would trash that guy's name at the club and make sure nobody plays with that scum ****er for money ever again.

Yeah he's super slow. I forgot that he was the dude who did Gangnam Style last week though. I'll allow it. Being paired with Sneds can't help the contrast though. Sneds just steps up and hits it almost before he's ready it seems. Then plants it 6 feet from the hole.

What would be the fastest Thursday morning group on the PGA Tour? Matt Every for sure, probably Sneds and ?????

At one point I was playing off a 14 and shot 1 under in a 6 hole shootout to win member guest at my dad's club. Some people were mumbling about me being a sandbagger, but I just had a great stretch of holes. That was in the middle a 3 month stretch where I dropped from 17 to 9. But 18 holes is completely different. I had still never broken 80 in my life when I got to single digit, I really don't see how that could be possible for an honest 14

I remember my best ever round was when I was 16 or so playing off a 13 handicap. I went out and shot 75 (par 72). No sandbagging, I was playing for 4 years at that point to get down to 13. Best round I've ever had and still my best round ever so I guess sometimes it can click. Funny part happened is I guess my buddy forgot to sign my scorecard so I wasn't eligible for any prizes. I did ask they still input the score for handicap purposes since I just wanted to play single figures and they did. I went from a 13 to a 10 overnight lol....

I shot a 75 on an easy par 70 layout when I was a 10 handicap. That was the lowest I ever shot as a double digit handicap.

An 18 shooting a 76 is a world apart from that, and definitely sounds fishy.

Gotta admit... Pebble Beach is probably in my top 10 of golf tournaments each year. I like seeing the amateurs; I like watching them breakdown their horrible swings (as most of us have). I like waiting for Eastwood to say something mildly inappropriate (which he seems to do most years). I like watching the bright sunshine and waves crashing on the shore in HD while it's cold and windy here, but I'm in my recliner with a fire going. If there happens to be a decent tournament going (like last year), then great! If not... whatever... there are like 40+ other weekends for that.

i was there last year and saw berman hit fwood. ugly but effective..

even the high handicappers i didn't see that many horrendous shots. alot of routine bogeys as mentioned

i think the amateurs take a ton of lessons and are strongly encouraged the keep it straight. they were very good on par 3 tee shots but not so great on sidehill lies etc.

didn't see much overswinging and ball going almost anywhere. and alot more pronounced squaring the club face than i see 15 handicaps at local muni.

basically alot of lessons and i think they are encouraged to keep ball straight. or maybe they really don't want to spray it all over with spectators

put another way, as a 12-15 handicap i felt my best shots were alot better than equiv at pebble but i spray the ball way more

It's not that unrealistic. I shot a 78 as a 16 handicap a few years ago. It was a 6200 yard par 72 with a 119 slope, but I still golfed my ball. I caught fire on the back 9 and shot -1 with 2 birdies and a bogey. However, it was a casual round with friends and I don't think it would have happened under any sort of pressure like a tournament environment.

Add Rory Sabbatini to that list too.

Slowest group ever?

Ben Crane, Jeff Overton, Kevin Na and JB Holmes

yeah, i always wondered with big pro-ams like Pebble beach if the ams are told not to belt driver on every hole because they'll spray it like crazy and could seriously injure someone.

that's what i was thinking with a couple of my posts.

and if i found out i was playing in pebble beach next year i think i would really start to focus more on hitting the ball straight and maybe not as far.

i think what happens vis-a-vis sandbagging is that some of these celebs probably work with a golf pro every day for a couple of hours for six to eight weeks before the tournament. therefore play way better than their handicap.

like when phil ivey won a bet being a high handicap but had taken tons of lessons and hadn't played much on course recently.

also, i saw last year with harrington's rich irish horse-breeding partner (mcmanus. or is that the other guy? there was two of them in one group) he played well the first couple of days and then really fell apart. probably took tons of lessons and also got tired as the tourney went on.

i remember here in canada gretzky nailing someone from 20 yards away with a drive. not good although i think nicklaus did it too. at LA Open i couldn't believe how close i was to some pro's drives 10 yards up from them. crazy but they knew what they were doing.

6 months into my playing career as a 32 I shot a 91. Here was my recap from OOB:

"Cloudy about 88degrees little wind. First time without a major driving mistake. Only 1 penalty. 0 sand shots. Good fairway irons and terrific approach shots/distances. Wedges were fantastic. Putting was horrific. Chipping was great and left myself plenty of chances to 1-putt today that I didn't capitalize on. Course management was very good. Composure good. Back 9 had nothing worse than bogey. Had a couple drives travel about 290 and a few others over 260 but my accuracy wasn't the best it could be. Still didn't get into any penalty trouble which is great. Played 1 ball all day which is a first. First time breaking 100 ever."

This included pretty horrific putting with:

3 putt from 12'
2 putt from 6'
2 putt from 6'
4 putt from 15'
2 putt from 3'
3 putt from 35'
3 putt from 35'
2 putt from 9'
2 putt from 8'

My best putts of that round were:
1 putt from 4'
1 putt from 6'
2 putt from 20'
2 putt from 20'

Jesus. Looks like I could have easily shaved 6 strokes off my bad putts and shot an 85. On a fairly easy 69.7/113

18 months later I'm a 28 and haven't had a ball-striking day close to this since

A lot of great story lines already this season:

-- Tiger winning early

-- Phil making TPC Scottsdale his bitch

-- Sneds tearing up the tour

-- James Hahn coming from out of nowhere

probably some others I'm forgetting

this should be cool for the Irish folks:

One of the players who qualified for the Match Play but won't be teeing it up is Phil Mickelson. He said last week that he would skip the event for the third time in four years since his kids are on school vacation and he plans to take a family trip. As a result, 65th-ranked Shane Lowry from Ireland got into the field and likely will play No. 1 seed Rory McIlroy.

Lowry got in by the slimmest of margins, all because of a birdie putt thousands of miles away from his home in Ireland.

Patrick Reed holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the last hole Sunday at Pebble Beach for a two-way tie for seventh with Fredrik Jacobson. That meant Jacobson moved up only to No. 66 by 0.0002 points behind Lowry. Notable players who did not qualify for the WGC-Match Play include 2006 U.S. Open winner Geoff Ogilvy and reigning PGA Tour rookie of the year John Huh.
