He's 9 strokes behind #2 Stenson and 8 strokes behind #3 Scott. After 1 round.

Not sure how the math all works out but he's going to have to play his ass off AND need both those guys to stumble tremendously for him to win the 10 mil.

This article is lol bad:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...es-it/2834609/

It purports to set forth a new formula for determining the Player of the Year.

"A win = 1 point; WGC win/The Players = 1½ points. A major = 3 points"

It then totals the points for a bunch of people. Tiger is in the lead with 6.5. Next is Phil with 5. Scott has 4. It goes down from there.

Then the article concludes: "Under this formula, if Woods, Mickelson, Scott or Kuchar win the Tour Championship, he would be the player of the year. Rose (ninth in the standings) and Dufner (20) might need some help to claim the big prize."

Math is completely wrong here. The Tour Championship is not a major or a WGC event. By the formula shown, a win is only worth 1 point. Since everyone is at least 1.5 points behind Tiger, Tiger has it locked up, under their own formula. Did the author even read the formula?

They don't have to stumble that much. Basically Stenson has to finish outside the top 5 and Scott needs to finish outside the top 3.

For example, Billy Horschel is in 3rd right now. If Horschel wins, Tiger wins the $10M as long as Tiger finishes in the top 12, Stenson finishes 5th or worse and Scott finishes 3rd or worse. While Tiger is 9 strokes behind the leader, he's only 4 strokes from 14th place.

I haven't gone through all the math yet, but #2 leading and #3 being in 2nd is about the worst possible situation for Tiger, yet he's still in 3rd place in the total FedEx Cup standings. That's $2M.

He's 29th I think out of 30. Being "only 4 strokes out of 14th" isn't worth much when it means you have to leapfrog 15 guys to get there.

And you're acting like Stenson finishing 5th or worse and Scott finishing 3rd or worse is like super likely.

Let's let it play out but it's not looking great for El Tigre.

I'm not saying it's super likely, or even 25% likely for Tiger to win the $10M. Just that it's possible.

And you can't say that Stenson or Scott is guaranteed a top 5. Plenty of people have done well on day 1 and faltered. Remember when Phil started with a 63 on day 1 of the Deutsche Bank? He finished 41st.

Doing the math, looks like Tiger is guaranteed at least 6th place in the Fed Ex standings, which is worth $800k. And that's a worst case scenario where the remainder of the top 6 all finish in the top 5 of this tourney in reverse order.

9 shots back with 3 rounds to play is still close to a lock for the GOAT. Not sure where people get off saying there's almost no chance. Probably still has a better chance to win than Stinson.

I'm not Tiger's biggest fan but I think he still has a great chance to win the cup. I don't know the exact math but think he has to be at least 25% at this point. He's played East Lake well in the past. His long iron game is one of the best on tour and that's key here along with the putter.

Did you see him putt today? He might turn that around, but he was terribad today.

Come on guys, Tiger pissed away a lot today, while Stenson and Scott, his closest threats, both balled. If he's 25% to win it... what was he before anyone went off today?

His odds were pretty high before tee off given his current form, the way the points set up, and his history at East Lake

Well his win percentage this year has been like 30% in full field events. So who knows what it'd be for a 30-person field. Plus he has a huge advantage with the point lead. If one of the top 5 doesn't win he had to have like an 80% chance to take home the cup before the tourney began. He **** the bed though.

Pretty hilarious that he succumbed to the Stenson Effect. Paired together today and Tiger gave him 9 strokes, out of sheer fear of the Alpha Dog.

I don't get all the Stenson hate on this forum.

I usually HATE it when any golfer breaks clubs, but somehow when the no.5 golfer in the world, who has had an insane few months and is probably the hottest golfer at the moment does it, I almost respect him more. It shows me that he isn't resting on what he has already done and wants to go out there and win again and again.

I am sure there are plenty of guys who would just count winning this tournament as a nice bonus to the season Stenson has, but not him.

Interesting article on the yips : https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...52434380,d.bmk

I think it makes a lot more sense that problems come as a result of the body deteriorating, rather than the mind..

Destroying a club on the course in a fit of anger is something other players have done. Destroying the property of the host club 10-15 minutes later says he has some serious anger management issues.

there is no doubt he has major anger management issues. This is setting up to be one of the worst meltdowns of all time.
