FTR, after an abysmal first two rounds, Rory's last two rounds were at 6 under. Still finished in 59th, but at least he wasn't last.

Only two players went moved from outside of the top 30 to the top 30 and a place in the Tour Championship: Nick Watney, whose 2nd place finish moved him from 34th to 12th, and Luke Donald, whose 4th place finish moved him from 54th to 29th.

The players who control their own destiny next week (i.e., the ones who win the FedEx Cup by winning the Tour Championship) are:

1) Tiger Woods
2) Henrik Stenson
3) Adam Scott
4) Zach Johnson; and
5) Matt Kuchar

Wtg Luke - he knew he needed a top 5 or better and produced the goods - have two UK players to root for now.

The scenario where Tiger can still win (well . . . share) the FedEx Cup by finishing 29th is hilarious.

Rory Sabbatini finishes the year with more points than Rory McIlroy. I joked about this a while ago and it actually happened. Can't wait to tune in to the battle of the Rorys next year.

Pretty sure they would change the points system if someone won by finishing 29th.

Not if it was Tiger.

In 2008, one guy went 1st, 1st, 44th, and 22nd. Another guy went cut, 3rd, 1st, 1st. The guy who finish 22nd won the FedEx Cup. In fact, he could have finished 30th and still won the FedEx Cup. (The other guy was Camilo Villegas, who merely had an incredibly hot runThey changed the scoring after that year.

I guess it depends on how you feel about whether the FedEx Cup is only supposed to reflect the playoffs or if it's supposed to reflect the year as a whole. Under the current point system, someone who finished 3rd, 1st, and 1st would win the $10M pretty easily. But Vijay had a better year as a whole.

Neither stat controls for difficulty of lie, distance to the pin, difficulty of course, or putting ability.
Good post. You should post more. Actually I surprised you didn't get a ton of replies quoting stats telling you how wrong you are..

Why Lord why does it have to be Zach Quaker Johnson.... The only 5 on my tour like list. Heck, I didn't even have a 4.

Best exchange from today's broadcast:

There was a bee on Furyk's ball, Johnny Miller says that Jim looks like he is scared of the bee. Someone chimes in asking, "Isn't everyone afraid of bees?"

Johnny wastes no time in saying, "NOT ME" and you can just envision him puffing out his chest as he says it. Someone else throws in a sarcastic, "You're not afraid of anything Johnny" to which he answers, "Yeah that's pretty much true" without a hint of irony.

A few seconds of awkward silence passes and then Maltbie says, "What about 4-footers?"

Owned.

That's gold.

Can't believe Roger's still around actually. Thought he was gonna die following the last group around in 100 degree heat at the '95 Bob Hope. They had to help him onto the green to do the winner's interview. His head looked like a tomato. They had been carting him the whole back 9. I guess he's been "off the course" for a while though.

Even if you win all four majors that's not worth $10MM.

Tiger knows what's what.

When asked about 4-footers Miller responded, "Rattlesnakes or putts?". Roger quickly retorts "Putts". Johnny stammers for a bit after that but does chuckle at the needle.

Not really. If the 30 players finished in nearly reverse order, who do you think should win?

Tiger finishes 29th, Stenson finishes 30th,

#3 finishes 28th
#4 finishes 27th, etc.

The question there is basically do you think the guy entering East Lake in third place should leapfrog Tiger because he finishes 28th and Tiger finishes 29th. Answer is a pretty resounding "No".

Just because you need all kinds of help that will never actually happen that way doesn't mean the system is broken in this case.
